A woman gives birth in Florida and wakes up with her arms and legs amputated, and no answers.

This is just fucked up.

" The hospital, in a letter, wrote that if she wanted to find out exactly what happened, she would have to sue them "

The FUCKING Medical Industry is as corrupt as any other FUCKING Industry out there, Corporate, Religious, Juctice... Just show the woman the data that proves why they had to do what they did. Why the FUCK do lawyers have to get involved?

it's slightly upsetting

Just one more reason I never want children. "I have no legs...I have no legs..." (jingle, jingle)*>

Oh and I must say, the title of the thread is a doozy.

That is some Twilight Zone shit. No offense buddies but I am glad I don't live in the U.S. They won't even tell her why they amputated her arms and legs? Come on.

Doesn't the patient or someone like a spouse or parent have to sign a release form for any type of surgery to be performed?

That's the story freaked me the fuck out.

Hospitals are the worst, and they cover for everyone by lying.

My mom was getting routine angioplasty? (I guess that's what it's called), and she started screaming because she was in pain, and the last words that she heard, were the doctor say "Oh shit, I killed her!"

She died on the table, they brought her back, and he woke up with a quadruple bypass. Of course not the doctors fault....

My Grandpa died getting a "routine" operation done. The surgeon knicked his bladder and it turned into a nasty infection that killed him about one week later.

Hence for those with relatively minor heart disease, preserved good cardiac function, reasonable level of fitness and absence of other illnesses, the risk will be considerably less than this.

they also said there was a 3% chance of heart attack during or shortly after.

Hearing my surgeon say "Oh shit, I killed him" while I was on the operating table would be enough to give me a heart attack.

There has to be more to this story, it seems a bit vague. When did they amputate? She must have been put under for it... was it during labor or after?

The hospital is saying she has to sue them to see if anyone else on the floor had the Staph virus she caught, which makes sense because of patient confidentiality.

It's heart-breaking to even think about. Hopefully this story will make hospitals re-think everything they do, and possibly lead to a more sterile environment.

ok, so in http://www.wesh.com/news/9148849/detail.html that article, it says

Claudia Mejia knows her life will never be the same. Twelve days after giving birth to her son Matthew, doctors gave her a choice no one would ever want to make.

"If I want to live, they want to cut off my arms and legs. If I don't, I'll keep my arms and legs but I'll die. Is this a dream?" Mejia said.

So it looks like they did tell her that she had to have the amputation, it wasn't performed without her knowledge. I guess the issue is that they won't tell her how she contracted staph

I emailed this story to my dad who is a personal injury lawyer and this was his thought:
That is truly a bizarre story. I can only guess that someone at the hospital had the e coli that is flesh eating and the hospital thinks she got it from another patient but that the privacy laws prevent them from naming the other patient. They probably want a court to ORDER them to tell her so they won’t be liable for disclosing privileged information. I don’t think that would happen in Texas.

well it's good to see her story has gotten legs

I have to give her a hand for being a real trooper

the hospital doesnt have a leg to stand on

I just hope the poor woman doesnt have to foot the bill

they're gonna cost an arm and a leg

Hopefully her wounds will heel up soon

Sounds like there are a lot of people who could be fingered for the blame
