For random reasons(*), I thought about this series of books this morning and wondered whether anyone else is a fan of this series of fantasy novels? And I'm talking the whole group -- the first three novels in the first chronicles, the next three books in the second chronicles, and Runes of the Earth, the first book of the final chronicles.

I remember reading the series for the first time in high school, and just being blown away by it. It's clearly a much different type of saga, than your standard fantasy series due to the darkness of the book. The hero is a leper from the real world who is thrust into a magic world which he doesn't believe is real. As a result, he does some despicable things that truly fucks up a number of people's lives. Every character in the saga faces true despair at some point and virtually every good thing is corrupted. And yet, there are truly good people who believe in the hero, despite his attitude and some of the things he does, and help Covenant to prevail. Any time I think of Saltheart Foamfollower, I can't help but get a good hopeful feeling in my heart.

I'm waiting for the second book of the final chronicles to come out, but so far, no dates have been released for it. It looks like it will be a wait.

Edit: It looks like the second book "Fatal Revenant" is coming out in October 2007.

---

* I listened to "Blurry" this morning, and heard the line "unclean," and immediately thought of this series, which was the first time, I was introduced to the word.

i enjoyed the first 6, didn't know of the 7th. i don't think i've read books that sent me scurrying for a dictionary more than those. my problem with them (as with most fantasy) everything is a tale about a looooooooong walk somewhere. why does every fantasy book have to be about walking for months? (much like randal's critique of LotR in clerks 2).

Because a majority of fantasy settings don't have cars, planes, or engines of any kind, steam or otherwise, except maybe siege. And it sounds stupid to say, 'and the group left Darkmoor and three months later arrived in Podunk.'

Just as an FYI, the second book of the "Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever" came out a week or two ago. I bought it, but probably won't be reading it until December, as other books are on my plate:
