Ok...

So i went and exchanged it...so far so good with this one.

But I had no idea this was a regularly occurring thing, and that it was so common.

Now i'm getting three flashing red lights on my console button, with the right quadrant not lit up..
I checked the troubleshooting page and it says something about the xbox360 being used too much and you may need to go outside for a little bit before you reach basement dweller status

My son was greeted with this little surprise when he turned on the xbox this morning. I did a little 'ring of death' research and read about the towel trick. It seems to work but I don't expect it to last for too long.
It would suggest to me that there are faulty solder connections someplace inside that temporarily mend themselves when the xbox is overheated. Does anyone know which connections are faulty and if they can be repaired with a quick touch of a soldering iron or maybe a blast of a heat gun ? Our xbox is well out of warranty and I won't be spending big bucks to send it for repairs so I don't really have a lot to lose.

It is faulty solder connections. I forget which connections it is, but I've read the full reports on why it happens and whatnot. Contact MS, they may still repair it for free.

After sending mine in for the second time, I sold mine with all the games to a neighbor and used the money towards a PS3.

I just did a preventive maintenance modification on mine to avoid these issues.

Got our SECOND Red Ring of Death :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: I'm so friggin' pissed right now. At least Microsoft is going to repair it for free, again. I just have to pay for the box to ship it in (and the cost of shipping I assume). I am never again buying a system at launch. Screw you Bill Gates!!!!!!!!!!!!

That sucks kat! Fortunately I haven't had the red ring yet. But I have been having a different problem over the last few days. Sometimes the xbox will not read the discs. I have to eject the disc and reinsert it several times before it will finally read it. Maybe something with the lens being dirty? I should probably get a cleaning disc. Anyone else have this issue?

That happened with ours from time to time. I have no idea what the issue was though. We have been getting a lot of game freezes lately. We keep all our discs in their boxes so I don't think it was a disc issue (they look pristine). The door would also get jammed once in a while.
The Microsoft support site says that the failure to recognize a disc can be caused by several problems, here is the link to the subject http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910798 .

If you bought a 360 in the first two years of its life its probably fucked. If yours is a launch system and you've only had 2 red rings I'd say you are lucky. I've heard much worse horror stories. The newer 360 models don't seem to have this problem but they do have another problem, the E74 error which Microsoft had to extend warranties to three years too. The 360 functionally is simply a piece of shit. But so was the PS2 so I guess people don't have a problem with it.

I leave my games on pause a lot and just come back to them. I'm on my 2nd 360, the first one had drive failure.
Today I waltzed into my living room and saw the evil RROD. I turned it off, then on again and it went away. Is my 360 on it's way out again?! Barely a year old.

Yeah, its on its way out. Once you get it it keeps happening until its totally broken.

Ya gotta take it apart and to the plastic washers on the heat sink thing too. It helps a lot with cooling.
Maybe that was just older machines, I don't know, I don't own a 360, just helped fix a couple.

And this was one of the ones from the new batches that were supposed to have no rrod issues. At least it will be under warranty, that shit is 3 years now, right?
Is this happening because I leave it on for so long, I used to leave my freaking SNES on for months with no issue.

The RROD is due to some shitty solder points in the console. The heat generated by the console softens it and over time it starts losing its connections. So yeah, leaving it on for long periods of time doesn't help. But it would happen eventually anyway.

Maybe there's some organic resin we can put on the 360.

When I got the Elite, I gave my old one to my sister and she called the other day to ask what red lights mean. Glad I got rid of that when I did.

I bought a used xbox on ebay that had the red rings on it to try to fix it myself, and I was successful. It's actually not the solder, Microsoft just used way too much thermal compound between the gpu, cpu and the heatsinks.
The thermal compound got hot and liquidy, then runs all over the board, shorting out the prongs on the microchips. All you have to do is open it up and clean up the paste. Then you purposely overheat it to cook out any residue left behind. Worked like a charm first time I did it. Cost $0, since I had a tube of thermal paste laying around.
here's a picture of the circuit board with the paste running all over.
If anyone has one with the red rings and wants to try to fix it, drop me a pm and I can help.

I gave up after the latest one shit the bed. I ended up digging out the old xbox (original) for KOTOR, Jade Empire and the like and will stick with that the PS3 the PC and the Wii. Eff the 360 mightily
