View Full Version : Corporate Team Building

I just got back from a national sales meeting in Austin Texas. The last session they had a motivational speaker/team builder. I find it hard to buy into these types of things, but this one was a little different. We had to participate in various activities and describe to the group what role we took, and what we learned about ourselves in the process.

Towards the end, we were broken into groups of 6 and had to build bicycles right out of the box. We each took our respective roles and went to work. Our team finished the bike early, so we helped other teams finish theirs. (nice BMX bikes by the way).

When done, we were asked to close our eyes and define what a bicycle meant to us. Some answered "freedom", "fun" etc...When we opened our eyes, a large group of underprivledged inner city kids and their parents entered the room. Totally unexpected. Each kid got a bike that we built. It may have been a "had to be there" moment, but it was very moving.

Did any of the groups fail to build a bike?

In my experience the so called team building events are more of a 1 man effort with 3+ coat tail riders.

I really like the sound of this. Besides it being a wonderful task that helped put a smile on children who were in need, it may have burned the importance of teamwork into the participants mind. Next time the need for teamwork comes into question this situation will come to the forefront and everyone might put in that little extra.

Typically no consequences for these stupid group conventions, instead their laziness hurt underprivileged childeren.

Everyone worked hard, but they only gave us 35 minutes to do it. Some teams were just faster, ....and running rear brake cables is bitch.

in your case telecaster it is a very cool story!

in the whole corporate scheme of things it really means very little. in the end how many kids pay top dollar for bikes to keep corporate executives rolling in high salaries and bonuses while employees continue to take wage freezes and benefit cuts.

don't get blinded by the small deeds because that's what they exactly are " SMALL "
