Your cringe story of the day.

The vast freshwater ecosystem of the Amazon River is home to abundant animal life, and many of its species thrive by virtue of their ferocity. If one were to ask the locals which of the river's indigenous species is the most treacherous, a few might describe the roaming packs of carnivorous piranhas, or the massive anaconda snakes; but based on the general sentiment of the region, the most frequently uttered response would be "candirú."

Oh my golly.

"we dont swim in your toilet, don't pee in our river"

that is the worst story ever.

I have heard of this before, and I think it was actually mentioned in a movie (Anaconda maybe?).

I learnt about these li'l monsters when I was a kid from reading William Burroughs' novel, Naked Lunch (I think that's where he wrote about them). After a bit of research I was shocked to discover that they are real living creatures. I have worn a condom ever since!!! Nice job digging this nightmare up, ha ha ha!!! (I am holding my junk rite now cuz I'm scared & disgusted & I don't think I'll ever let go)

The tiny fish enter thru a fish's mouth as it exhales. It feels the rushing water and rushes in thru the nearest opening, and then look for an artery to feast on.

Then I read this

Silvio Barbossa was one such soul. He was swimming in the Amazon River when he went head to head with the tiny parasite:

"I felt like urinating. I stood up, and it was then it attacked me. The candirú attacked me. […] When I saw it, I was terrified. I grabbed it quickly so it couldn't go deeper inside. I could only see the end of its tail flapping. I tried to grab it, but it slipped away from me and went in. […] I was very afraid, because the candirú bites."

Ouch.

Every time I hear about these damn things I think about the good work the burger chains are doing to raze that menace of a jungle to the ground to make way for hamburger farms. Then I feel good again.

Sean Connery talked about them in Medicine Man. I would literally move if I lived anywhere near those little monsters.

I remember hearing about these things when I was a kid. I couldn't believe that they were actually real. Pure evil.

The spiny candiru has been way overused in movies.
