I've been running Vista at work for a few months now and it's not bad. Most of the bugs have been worked out, so if you go with it all of your stuff should work. The bottom line though is, you don't need it. It's fun to play with but so is linux. If you're looking for a fun OS to play with I would try Ubuntu.

I have had good experiences with gateway/emachines (same compmay)

If it is significantly different from the last time it was activated, they won't let you. You could also try to call Microsoft for the activation number. I've reinstalled XP many times and when I've called for the registration number I've had no issues at all. They gave me an activation number easily. But I was using the same computer each time so.......

I bought a really nice new computer with vista, there are some really cool new things, but a lot of stuf they made more difficult then before. For some reason windows media player wouldnt play my avi files. It wouldnt allow me to set yahoo as my default email, kept getting an error meessage. It kept clearing my cookies even though I had the same settings I used on my xp computer. The cool things were the folder options. The icon sizes and the video previews in the folders were cool (only wmv files)

Anyway so I called gateway to discuss some of these issues and others. After being on hold for 1 hour I talked to a rep and he had no clue how to fix or how to navigate through vista. He said they were all given a course last week, but it was a lot of bugs still working out. He recomended to return my system until the bugs were worked out, or figure out by playing with the software and wait for microsoft to issue service packs to fix bugs.

So after playing with it further and not being able to use everything I wanted I decided to send it back and wait 6 months. It sucks b/c I bought a real nice computer. 17in laptop with intel core dual processor, 1 gb ram dvd burner and more all for $699 (after rebate) The cheapest I have ever found a 17 inch laptop was $999. Anyway good luck to those who bought a vista. Keep us updated with what you like, dislike and bugs.

don't bother putting in the product key until after you finish the install. you have at least 30 days to do it

are you performing an upgrade, or a fresh install? i've only had two problem-free installs, so i don't have too many ideas on this one. what kind of pc do you have?
I have XP, but I am doing a clean install. I have a very new emachines, into which I manually upgraded the memory and video car/3d accelerator.
Windows says it is probably a hardware problem, and the only thing the advisor says is that there is a possibility of an issue with my video card due to unknown compatibility.
That would be kind of gay.

Its an ATI/Radeon card. I suppose I could try to disable it and the install.
Maybe I should try this on my laptop first instead.
