Now K-Rod gets to toy with the bottom of the order. This should be hilariously bad.

The key to scoring runs is OBP. It's that simple.
You might notice something. A bunch of teams with high OBP and low amounts of steals at the top of the list, and teams with low OBP and lots of steals at the bottom. It's a ranking of the highest scoring teams in the AL last year. This is not an aberration.
S (http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL_2005.shtml)ee also here. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL_2005.shtml)
And here. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL_2004.shtml)

And here. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL_2001.shtml)
Sometimes the highest scoring teams have a lot steals. they ALWAYS have high OBP.
Holy shit, I was talking about CENTER FIELD FOR SPEED. Thats twice I posted that. I never said I have a problem with OBP, I have a problem with Giambi as a very limited baseball player, the fact that he takes up 3 roster spots, and the team would be better served by someone who could pull his weight outside the batters box. You can find 1B who have good OBP and can catch the ball and run a little too.
And BTW-OPS is a more complete stat for hitting productivity. Put it this way, would you rather keep Giambi, or go after Teixera? I think we agree on that. The team would be better served by a more complete ballplayer.

I'm still bugged by the clogging the bases thing. I think you are underestimating Giambi's offensive value. First of all this team has only 3 HR threats. You can't get rid of Giambi unless you know you are getting a power hitter back. And I doubt that you will get one in a trade for Giambi because of a number of factors. Obviously Texeira is an upgrade but you can't count on getting him, let alone any time soon.
Still, Giambi is still too valuable to this team to try and get rid of him unless you know you have an immediate replacement. Without that you'd have essentially Melky replacing him in the lineup and that would be ugly.

The lineup will eventually hit.. And the pitching has been pretty damn good... its this FUCK WAD.. Mismanaging The pen, and taking out starters early, that fucked up this team.. Bring in a manager WHO KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK HE IS DOING.. Before its too late.. And we could make a run at the WC.. Remember.. The Stros were way out at the break 2 yeas in a row, and made huge runs to make the play off.. But it all has to start with firring DUMB AS DOG SHIT!

Lets worry about the second place team for now.
I watched the end of the game yesterday with my father in law. I thought there was no way they don't win that with 2 on and no outs, KRod pitching horribly. You guys are cursed. It's almost to the point now where i genuinely feel bad for you.

Bowa is the Man you want if you want a 82 win season. I don't know how he'd go over in a clubhouse filled with established stars. The talk of Girardi coming in an righting the ship by being a hard-nosed manager really doesn't seem the way to go. Mattingly is the answer, and I hear he's great with the media.

I don't think that Torre's going anywhere mid-season. Cashman is another story though
If they keep losing games at the rate they are, he'll go just for the sake of making a change...Cashman too.
As for Girardi, he was doing the color commentary for the Phillies/Braves game last Saturday on FOX and the play by play guy (Kenny Albert, I think), asked him about the Yankees point blank and Girardi kind of hinted that he wouldn't be interested in taking over midseason especially if it meant Torre was getting fired, since he respects him so much.
If the Yanks fire Torre, my guess is they probably go with an in-house interim manager to finish out the season, which would be either Mattingly or Bowa, and then try and hire Girardi in the offseason.
I just wonder if Steinbrenner could ever bring himself to do the right thing if the Yankees fall even further out and start looking to trade off pieces of this team for prospects.

Francesa has Torre's home phone #, and thats all he cares about. He might not be so friendly with the next manager, and get all those "inside scoops" he gets from Torre. Most of which we all know before he mentions them on the air.

The Yankees have continually spit in Pettitte's face and shown him the ultimate disrespect you can show a pitcher. This team needed to be blown up and restructured at the end of last year, when we went dead against Detroit. But surprise, surprise! We made no major changes, and carried that comatose behavior into the 2007 season. It's not like the warning signs weren't there. Every logical Yankee fan knew that the end of last season was a call for major change. But Cashman stayed put. He is just as responsible for this mess as Torre. How much longer is George gonna sit back and watch this happen?

Joe Torre should have been fired before the season and he should be fired now. Besides that......
For the love of christ, stop acting like anyone saw this coming. Trading away Gary Sheffield and Randy Johnson are not major changes? What more could they have done? Trade away Giambi? No one wants him. Abreu? They got him because they were the only ones who could afford him, and now no one would want him. A-Rod? He's the only tradeable asset but imagine how bad this team would be without him. You trade him away now and this team will be in the toilet for a long time.
There's not a player on this team who is struggling right now who not only produced last year but earlier this season as well. Everyone is saying there should have been major changes but what could they have done? The only thing I can say Cashman did wrong is signing Igawa over someone like Ted Lilly. Other than that there was nothing on the free agent market and the players everyone wants to get rid of nobody else wants.

Let's not even kid ourselves anymore. Tomorrow's game counts as much as a charity exhibition game. The 2007 season is effectively over. The 1915 Boston Braves were the last team to come back from a 14.5-game deficit, so I don't even want to hear "It's only May" from anyone. And we're almost as far out of the Wild Card as we are the division, with about 10 teams in front of us, so we can put that one to rest too. It fucking sucks, but let's just all come to terms... The question now is: Who gets fired, who stays, who goes, and how do we play out 2007 to benefit in 2008?
...Why did we sign Clemens again?

Exactly. And everyone wants to act like Kreskin since Lilly is off to a good start in the NL, meanwhile the guy is a career .500 pitcher. Ted Lilly would have been a more safe move than Igawa, but he's not a difference maker on this team. Plus he already spit the bit once in NY, and once signed he would have been yet another untradeable if he repeated that here.

I lived through the 94 baseball strike, I can live through one bad Yankee season. The fact of the matter is we have less of these lost seasons than anyone else, so its tough to complain too much.
And I try to remind myself that one day I wont have Derek, Jorge, A-Rod and Mariano to watch play baseball anymore, so you have to take advantage of it while its there. You only get so many days in the sun, as players and as a fan.

Guess what? Remember Phil Hughes? You are going to keep on remembering him for a long time. Think August.
Click here for pain. (http://yankees.lohudblogs.com/2007/05/30/phil-hughes-update/)
Brian Cashman admitted today that Phil Hughes has a Grade 3 ankle sprain and will need 4-6 weeks of rehab time before he gets back on the mound. Given that will take Hughes an additional four weeks to get his arm ready to pitch, we’re looking at 8-10 weeks before he is back on the mound. And that’s assuming everything goes well.
So don’t expect Hughes back before mid-August. A Grade 3 sprain is the most serious. That is on top of a Grade 2 hamstring year.

I just saw the encore of the game and looks like A-Rod took a page from "Willie Mays-Hayes" and called "I got it!" with the pop up in the 9th with 2 outs. I never thought I see that in a real game. And obviously he got away with it.

I had to check that link to see if it was true. Truely funny stuff. You all know that if the Yankees were playing well as a team the Post would never have sent a reporter to spy on Arod. These beat reporters have a good idea of whats going on in the clubhouse, who's good guys and who's a dick. But they usually keep this under their hat untill the player leaves and then even at that point it's usually a veiled reference. I don't think it's cool what he or the "reporter" did.

While I agree that it's nobody's business what A-Rod does on his time but that play at third base is Bush League all the way. I teach my little leaguers to put their heads down and run with two outs. If any of my players tried that crap, they would be on the bench next to me.
And if it was an isolated incident that would be one thing. But with his history (swiping at Bronson Arroyo's glove in 2004, the elbow last week to Pedroia, etc.).

Giambi's out for at least a month. In other news, my brain is about to acquaint itself with a drill. Goodbye cruel world.
Now hold on here. I'd agree that I was and still am bummed about Hughes being out. I was looking forward to seeing him far more than Clemens. But Giambi is different.
Here's his #s for this year
AVG .262 | HR 7 | RBI 23 | OBP .380 | SLG .436
All below his career averages, that projects to 21 HRs, 69 RBIs for the season. The RBI total bothers me most. Its not enough to be a full time DH on a winning team. Be honest, he's been a drag on this team all year.
Now think about what this means. A roster spot opens up for some bench help which could be useful in the late innings or for an extra reliever. Damon is your full time DH, Melky plays center which is a HUGE upgrade defensively, plus when he's going well will give you similar OBP (.360 last year) to Giambi with more speed plus he's a switch hitter. Damon is banged up, so he'll likely be more productive out of the DH role.
Long story short, I think this moves the Yanks away from waiting for the 3 run HR and toward building runs and rallies. Which was what they did last year when Shef and Matsui went down. Remember last year? With Shef and Matsui in April and May they were way behind the RedSox. With Melky and Abreau they blew past them by late August. The #1 job they have right now is to get Abreau and Melky going. I think with steady playing time Melky will, and Abreau has been too good a hitter for too long to not turn it around. I think this moves them back to playing the way they did mid-late last year, and thats a good thing.

Melky hasn't been good all year. Having his .200 average and zero power in the lineup everyday makes the marginal defensive improvements meaningless. Damon isn't playing horrible CF. This isn't Bernie out there. And Melky isn't struggling because of lack of playing time. He's gotten plenty. He should be improving from last year and he isn't. Because honestly, Melky's numbers last year were below average for an outfielder. That's he's gotten worse over such a long stretch is worrisome.
Last year the Yanks blew by the Red Sox in August when the Sox imploded with injuries. And again, this STILL isn't a small ball team. And it shouldn't be. If this means I'll be seeing Jeter and Abreu dropping down more bunts this team is not going to get better. They simply need to be more consistent. All this season at least one area of this team has been atrocious. It started out with the starters. They started playing well and the bullpen crapped out. Then the starters crapped out again. Then the pitching steadied and now half stinks. If everyone, or at least most, of the lineup can hit to their level at the same time this team will score runs. But replacing Giambi in the lineup with Melky does not help this team.
To sum up, the Yanks are struggling right now because Abreu, Melky, Damon, Giambi and until recently Cano were all not hitting. No amount of coaching or changes in philosophy will make this team win with that happening. They start hitting and everything else stays stable and this team will win.

I always use the 98 Yanks as my gold standard. Here's something to remember
AL Team hitting leaders
Team OBP-Yanks#1
Team R/G Yanks#1
Team BB-Yanks#1
Team OPS-Yanks#1
Team HR-Yanks#4
Team SLG-Yanks#4
In the past few years the Yanks have been either #1 or #2 in HR's, and have still been either #1 or #2 in R/G. But its a more "feast or famine" type of hitting team, 8 runs one night and 2 the next and we've seen where that leads you in October. Point being, you can still score your runs and have a more efficient lineup by mixing in some singles and doubles hitters. Power teams are sexy, but they run hot and cold.

If you dont think the Yanks were a MUCH better team with Abreau and Melky than they were with Shef and Matsui last year, I dont know what you were watching. And I mean watching, there are times you go past the #s and just use your eyes. I dont care if Bill James thinks its all just selective perception, its not. And the team's record proves it.
And if my memory serves me, Varitek was the only major injury they had before the August seres with the Yanks. Manny (knee), Ortiz (heart), and Paps (shoulder) all went down afterwards. I think Lester (cancer) was after also.

So what, Giambi's out. Maybe now we'll miss making the playoffs by 10 games instead of 9.

The Division's over, but the WC is at 7.5, which is doable. But until they get to .500, I'm not thinking about anything.

If that was anyone but A-Rod, people would say "He taught a rookie a lesson" or something like that. But since its him, they want to call the league office for some reason.
The appropriate response from a veteran would be "Shit, I cant believe I fell for that".
You're serious huh? Incredible.

Thank you.

My little league coach taught us to play like Ty Cobb. And by that I mean we bet on the games and went into the stands to beat wheelchair-bound, elderly black men.
Nice!

No, but what Phillips did was worse and we heard nary a peep from you. And the Yanks didn't spend an hour crying to reporters afterward.
Nobody complains when outfielders pretend they lost the ball in the light or act as if they will catch a ball that they have no chance on to fool runners. Because players are smart enough not to fall for such foolishness. Most of them, anyway. Now if you will excuse me I'm going to play 52 pickup with a certain Toronto third baseman.

Every player in every game is looking for some kind of advantage. Outfielders try to fool runners with fake catches, second basemen deke runners into sliding when there is no throw coming, it' s all part of the game. Did what A-Rod do break a rule in the "Great MLB Unwritten Rule Book", who knows. Was it bush league, sure, but if it wasn't A-Rod who did it, nobody would be talking about it. How about when all the players on the bench clear out of the way when an opposing catcher falls in while trying to catch a foul? So it's less of a sin to let someone crack their head open than shouting at a fielder trying to break his concentration? Even being a Yankee fan, I'm not blind to the fact that some of the stuff that A-Rod does rubs some people, including myself, the wrong way, but when your team is mired in a 5 game losing streak, tell me you don't want any advantage that you can get. I would be more pissed that a ballplayer on my team would allow himself to be shaken by something like that. After all, if it's a "bush league" play, than a "professional" should never fall for it.

If A-Rod yelled "Mine" or "I got it," or anything to that effect, technically it's against the Official MLB rule book. You can't interfere with a player fielding a ball, which I believe includes yelling something like that. If he just said "ha" (which is what he claimed), then I'm not so sure if that would be a violation.
Either way, the ump was right there and if he did yell "Mine," he should have been called out. Although, I've seen umps ignore the official rules before (knowingly or unknowingly).

I hear ya, but, according to the rule book, interference or obstruction involves either physical contact with the player or the ball or physically "blocking" a fielder from making a play. Believe me, I'm an umpire and even though I'm only certified up to high school level, we had to study the same rule book that is used in the major leagues. There is no rule stating that a player can't shout or say anything. I don't think that the ump could have called him out

Apparently, neither of us is entirely correct:
Section 7.08 (b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to make a play on a batted ball;
Rule 7.08(b) Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not.
Attempting to hinder a fielder by yelling is not actually stated as interference, and physical contact is NOT required for the umpire to rule interference occurred. So, it was up to the ump to decide if interference occurred or not.

You are the type of Yankee Fan that I refer to as an idiot who panics way too much...you should think of baseball like the stock market, you dont sell cause of a few days of losses. Now I am not saying the Yankees are going to turn this around but you think too drastic. You have giving up on a young player because of a bad month (about how much playing time he has gotten)! If the team reverts to small ball and it works so what, HR mostly come off of mistake pitches and you cant just wait for that to happen sometimes you have to go make things happen. I am waiting till July 1st then I will decided to "panic" or not.

There is NO way an ump is making that call on verbal interference!!!! It is as rare as not letting a batter take first because he didnt get out of the way of the pitch that hit him. This play reminds me of a middleinfielder fake tagging a runner when the ball is in play.

True. My point was simply that the umpire does have the right to call interference if he sees fit. I have never heard of it actually happening in a game though.

Yeah, I guess the act of "hindering" is a judgement call. To be honest, we never really covered yelling as a distraction in class. I guess that my point is that all of the rules cover the physical aspects of the game, and not any mental distractions. If I put myself in the umpires shoes for this call I would do exactly what he did, nothing. Because, if you think about it, if you outlaw what A-Rod did, then you have to outlaw players screaming things from the bench (which you know that they must do with foul balls near their dugout). I just feel that a player is responsible for the mental aspect of his own game

I agree. My original point (based on a column I had read) was that if A-Rod had tried to interfere by yelling "Mine," it's against the rules and he could have been called out. However, it seems as though it's not EXACTLY against the rules. It can technically be interference, but I can't imagine an ump calling this considering some of the crap that most likely is said during the games. So, I basically racked up 4 posts that amounted to nothing in the end.

In other Yankee news, here's an unnamed scout's view of the Yankees.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2007/06/01/2007-06-01_not_a_good_team.html
There are some solid points here, with the highlight being the scout's appraisal of Bobby Abreu:
'"It looks like he's never played the game before in his life." Having watched several Yankees games during the past month, the scout can't figure out how Abreu has dropped off as severely as he has this season.
"I'm as confused as you are; he looks like a piece of garbage,"'
I would have to agree.

Interesting article. I agree with most of what he was saying, but I can't agree that only having 4 or 5 "scary" bats in the lineup is not enough to contend. Yes, Abreau has dropped off the map and they definitely need another bat to take Giambi's spot in the lineup, but he didn't mention the most glaring problem...the bullpen. There are at least 10 games that the bullpen has blown so far this season. With the starting pitching in a better place now, the bats will start coming around, but we 3/5 of our staff being 6 inning pitchers, we need that bridge to Mo if we're gonna get anywhere.

Idiot who panics too much? What the hell? Where have I said that I have given up on the season? Melky has gotten lots of playing time. He was an everyday player for a month while Matsui was out and during that time he was even worse than his numbers are now. He was batting under .200. Why would you expect Melky to improve? he's too young to know anything. And last year his numbers weren't great. they were barely average for an outfielder and he showed no power.
Don't assume that because I'm not sure that one player is going to produce that I'm panicing or have given up.

The New York Yankees (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy) manager concluded A-Rod shouldn't have distracted a Toronto fielder this week during a popup, joining a chorus of baseball people who said the two-time AL MVP broke the sport's unwritten code.
