Its just ironic that since the sox beat the yanks in 2004 the yanks no longer get the lucky breaks. The sox had the curse and it seems the biggest come back or biggest choke in sports history has now brought on a curse to the yanks.
Its sad b/c this kid has talent and looked as good as he was talked about. ESPN just announced hammy injury going on the DL out 4-6 weeks. Im so pissed he was going to help my fantasy team now its back to free agent wire.

Well, the optimist in me says it's not like he's immediately turned into Kerry Wood, hurt every start.

i dont think anyone believes its all over, but a hammy takes a long time to recover from and they need all the help they can get right now so its a big blow to lose Phil.

I can only say that if things tend to even out over the course of a season, then the Yanks should have ALOT of good bounces coming their way in August and September.
Moose is coming back in a few days, that should help. There's also reports that Philly wants to dump Jon Lieber for a package of minor leaguers. Maybe its time to think about doing something like that. Lieber eats up innings, which they could REALLY use right now.

WHAT WE'RE HEARING
Part of the reason the Phillies moved Jon Lieber into the starting rotation was the hope that he would pitch well and prompt some team to be interested in dealing for him. But another part was that they want to see how Brett Myers handles bullpen duty, because some in that organization view him as a potential closer of the future.
And he has pitched well
REC 1-0 | SV 0 | ERA 2.57 | WHIP 1.24
Cashman said on the post game that Hughes hurt himself by overthrowing a curveball, basically trying too hard. How much is Cashman kicking himself right now for breaking his word and bringing up Hughes?

The Phillies have been trying to trade Lieber since last year. He was decent for the Yanks a couple years ago, and while he wouldn't be dominant they absolutely need someone that can go 7+ innings for them at this point.
Hughes' injury was a fluke kinda thing that could have just as easily happened in Triple A as the majors. The only bright side is if he comes back in 4-6 weeks, he'd be able to pitch the rest of the season without risk of reaching whatever innings threshold they set for him.
And how many hamstring injuries is that already this season? 4? If I were one of the new strength & conditioning guys they hired, I'd start sending out resumes.

ARLINGTON, Texas – A day after the Yankees’ baffling run of hamstring injuries claimed another victim in Phil Hughes, the team fired its new strength coach.
Marty Miller, who was hired last winter to the newly created position of director of performance enhancement, was let go on Wednesday, according to a Yankees official who was granted anonymity because the move has not been announced

As someone who follows the team about as in-depth as someone who doesn't actually work there can, I'll say it won't happen.
The Phils wanted to trade Lieber in the offseason....they wanted to trade him when they demoted him to the bullpen...
Now that he's back in the rotation and pitching well, he's staying. They have no other starters waiting in the wings, and they won't move Brett Myers back to the rotation until at least the beginning of '08...Myers having a 'defined' role instead of being shifted back and forth is why he's been so agreeable to the move. To move him back now would throw the whole pitching lineup out of whack..if anything, Myers could be moving to the closer's role shortly. So they need Lieber at this point.
Now, if the Phils are 12 games out around the trading deadline...that may be another story. But I don't anticipate that. And they won't trade Lieber as long as they're in the race, or someone pays through the nose to where they can't refuse the offer. That, I can guarantee.
So I wouldn't wait around for that to happen...the Yanks best chance at this point is to drop $20 mil on Clemens.
Least surprising news ever. (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2858651)

Yeah, its kind of a catch-22. You put him in the rotation (hoping he pitches well) so you can deal him. But. . .if he's pitching well, why deal him? Everyone needs starters, and its too early to say anyone's out of a race. The only way it makes sense is they want to clear out his salary and they have a rookie who they want to make room for. Plus, how often do you see trades done in May? Most go down at the deadline.

here's something that bothered me last night and i wanted to share with you people to see what you thought. last night im watching the giants/rockies game, and its the 7th inning and Zito is cruising along close to 120 pitchers. now as of last year barry zito was an american league pitcher, why is it that american league managers panic once a pitcher hits 90 pitches but national league guys can be on cruise control in the 120's? it doesnt make sense to me, and it angers me even more when i see torre pull guys when theyre in the 80's in terms of pitch count. why cant american league guys just go longer?

Pitchers reguarly going above 100, especially into the 110-130 range are just begging for breakdowns. Trust me, I know for far too much experience. Don't be impressed by shitty managers who don't know when to pull a pitcher.

The only answer i can give you is.. Maybe its an easier 120 pitches in the NL?? Because they have the pitcher.. And besides a few teams.. The 7 8 9 hitters, are basicaly easy out.. That is the only answer i could give..

im only basing this observation on the yankee games that i watched which zito pitched because outside of that i didnt watch much of oakland. i remember him being in the 95-100 pitch mark. but never 120 like last night.

The funny thing is that the rumor in Philadelphia all winter was that the Phillies would have dealt Lieber to the Yanks for Scott Proctor and a couple throw-ins.
The Yanks refused to do it...I bet they regret it now. Lieber's no world-beater, but he's a smart pitcher and keeps his team in games.

That's one of my biggest complaints with Torre. Mojo's right, you cant let guys go too long. The numbers don't lie, and its been tried many times. It might work for one season (Like Guillen's 05 White Sox) but usually you pay for it later as Guillen did with injuries and ineffectiveness.
Thats NOT to say, however, that you cant do OCCASIONALLY do it. Like when 3/5 of your rotation is on the DL. Or in the playoffs. Torre refuses to do either, since he worries about things other than winning baseball games.

To be honest, I still wouldn't do that. Proctor's one of their best relivers when Torre doesn't run him into the ground.
Thats another oddity about Torre. He babies his starters, but runs the bullpen guys he LIKES into the ground from overuse. Some sort of cognitive disconnect there, don't you think?

Some more on Pavano
Pavano's Injury Worsens
Carl Pavano tried to throw a bullpen session Wednesday but stopped after a few minutes because of his strained elbow.
SPONSORED LINKS
"It's getting ridiculous," said Pavano, who missed nearly two years with other injuries before making two starts this season. "The team needs me, especially with other guys going down. Rest hasn't helped it. We came up with a plan we thought would work, but we've come up short."
Tommy John surgery is a strong possibility for Pavano, who plans to see Dr. James Andrews in Alabama.
"We're discouraged," Cashman said. "We hope [there's no surgery], but we can't rule it out."
If he has the ligament transplant, Pavano would be out through most of next season, the last year of his $39.95 million contract. Coming off nearly four years of not pitching, a 2009 comeback would be a long shot, so the righthander from Southington is considering the option of surgery carefully.
I guess if he's really injured, no one should question his character anymore (like me). It also sounds like his career is over.

Some more on Pavano
I guess if he's really injured, no one should question his character anymore (like me). It also sounds like his career is over.
The thing is that of all the injuries only the first one could be questionable. He was eventually diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis by Dr. Andrews. But then last year he did have bone chips. You can't make that up. And then he got into an actual car accident with actual broken ribs. And actually tried to pitch through them for an inning.
In then end he's just someone you can't count on and that's little fault of his own.

Rasner Sunday, Desalvo monday.
I think DeSalvo means "the savior" in Italian.
Pavano has been telling people he expects the drs will advise him to have surgery. If it's Tommy John, he would stand almost no chance of pitching for the Yanks under his current contract. What would that give him? 10 starts for $40 million?

Kevin Kennedy was talking about this the other day on 175. He said Ortiz had only been hit 11 times the past couple years. He couldn't understand why nobody goes after him. People used to use Al Belle for target practice, and I think he's a lot scarier than Ortiz.

He also mentioned that Mo Vaughn had been hit something like 120 times, so it's not the Sox that's keeping people from going after Ortiz.
And Kennedy was going from '03 on. Since then, Ramirez has been hit 25 times. Pitchers just don't go after him for some reason.

I'll take 8 innings any day, especially with what's been going on lately. With the off day, the rainout, and now Wang going 8 innings, the bullpen is actually in decent shape right now. Even with the double header they just had. Myers helped out ALOT last night with the 4 innings.
Couldn't have come at a better time, with Rasner and Desalvo going Sunday and Monday.
Heaven forbid a Yankees getting a complete game..
This is Wang's third start and he had virtually no Spring Training. You can't send him out there for a 110+ pitch start this early. At this point you can't risk it, especially with your best pitcher and the only one who can eat innings on a consistent basis.
Bulldogcakes
05-05-2007, 05:10 PM
I heard Sweeney Murti on WFAN say this morning that he thinks when Phillip Hughes returns in 6-8 weeks (sometime in July) it will be on the major league roster, not back in AAA. That surprised me. But the Yanks would have been worried about his innings, but with missing 2 months thats no longer an issue. He showed he can pitch here, and they feel the hammy was either a fluke injury, or was related to the now-fired trainer. Half the team (Wang, Mussina, Damon, Hughes) have had hamstring pulls, thats quite a coincidence.
That could be the mid-season "deal" that bolsters the rotation.

Pavano operates a heist on the mound (http://www.northjersey.com/page.php?qstr=eXJpcnk3ZjczN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXkxMTMmZmdi ZWw3Zjd2cWVlRUV5eTcxMjgxMDAmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZU VFeXk2)
Pavano was in Pensacola, Fla., on Friday, where he was supposedly being examined by Dr. James Andrews. There was no further news, however, as Pavano failed to get in touch with the Yankees and his agent, forcing all parties to admit they'd temporarily lost track of the pitcher.
Typical Pavano, unreliable to the end. Still, there's only one possible conclusion to this bizarre saga: Pavano will have reconstructive surgery that will keep him on the disabled list until mid-2008. And that's exactly what he's wanted all along.
Even before the scheduled visit to Andrews, Pavano was telling teammates he needs an operation. One Yankee said on Friday, "He's going to have [this surgery] one way or another." Pavano was going to find a doctor, any doctor, who could hasten his final exit from the Bronx.
The GM was fleeced by a pitcher who never intended to honor his contract. Even if you accept that Pavano's elbow is legitimately damaged, the constellation of preceding injuries told you there was something spiritually wrong with him. Pavano made Cashman look like a fool, and the GM compounded his mistake by insisting the right-hander would make a storybook comeback in 2007.
Cashman finally admitted on Friday, "This hasn't worked out" for either Pavano or the Yankees. But the GM is still being too nice. He - and agent Gregg Clifton, another honorable man – should stop making excuses for Pavano, stop talking about his bad luck and articulate what everyone in the baseball community already knows.
And that is, Pavano has made off with the greatest heist in recent Yankee memory. Who knew it would end this badly? Pavano had everyone so thoroughly conned: He was blessed with that power sinker, the Connecticut roots, the championship pedigree from the 2003 Marlins. He even turned down more money from the Tigers just to play in pinstripes.
But something happened to Pavano in his first six weeks in New York. A member of the organization said: "He realized he couldn't handle it here. Everything, all of this, was too much for him." And so began the steady blur of unthinkable injuries – the back, the buttocks, the shoulder, bone chips in the elbow. Now comes the doomsday setback, Tommy John surgery, which will keep Pavano on the disabled list for 12-16 months.
Clifton might have had a point, if the bad elbow was all that ailed Pavano. But once a player spends too much time on the DL, people start talking, even the ones who wear the same uniform. Cashman likes to say every one of Pavano's injuries was diagnosed and confirmed by a board certified physician. But ballplayers have a truer, sixth sense about who wants to be on the field and who doesn't.
You don't have to ask how the Yankees felt about Pavano. His latest setback hardly caused a ripple in the clubhouse. The Bombers were beyond shock or anger or even disappointment. Pavano was all but dead to the Yankees. If anything, the finality of Tommy John surgery will lighten the clubhouse, if not the organization.
The Yankees won't have to issue empty progress reports on Pavano's latest comeback. And he won't have to think of any more injuries. Good thing, since Pavano was running out of available body parts.
Wow. Klapisch is usually VERY measured in his remarks. For him to come down that hard on Pavano, it must be a common, if not universal perception on the team. And I cant think of ANYONE else I've heard him use such harsh language about. He was tough on Randy Johnson and Sheffield, but never like this. With Pavano looking at actually getting surgery, I didn't think this would still be looked at as another "excuse". But apparently many close to the team feel otherwise.
Pavano goes in the Ed Whitson category of guys who were totally unable to handle NY.
I wonder if the Yanks can still go after him for not telling them about the car accident. Maybe they can still void the deal after all.

I dont know if you heard Clemens in the press box, but he told Kay and Leiter he wants to be back by JUNE 1st, which shocked both Kay and me. He says he's already stepped up his schedule, and thinks he'll be ready by then. Expect to see him doing A-ball, then AA then AAA like he did last year.
In other good Yankee news Suzyn Waldman said that Hughes' hamstring was NOT as serious as they thought, so his schedule has been pushed up as well. I guess that means about 1 month for him instead of 2.
EDIT-Kev beat me to it! If its a grade 1 than he's about the same as Wang and Moose, which was 4 weeks.
Hughes has been called by many a "young Roger Clemens". It will be GREAT to have Clemens around as an extra pitching coach for him, and Clemens said the Yanks "Have some young pitchers he's looking foward to working with".

The 31-year-old right-hander was examined Friday by Dr. James Andrews. While damage was found in the elbow, the ligament was not torn, a Yankees official said Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team didn't make any announcement. The team would like Pavano to try to rehabilitate without an operation, but the oft-injured pitcher was leaning toward surgery, the official said.
Gregg Clifton, Pavano's agent, said the pitcher sounded discouraged when he talked with him briefly. Clifton said he didn't want to comment on the possibility of surgery until after he spoke with Andrews on Monday.
Recovery time for elbow ligament surgery usually is 12 to 18 months.
Now it makes sense. Everybody pitching over the age of 25 has some damage in their elbow. This is his latest excuse to pussy out. He's finished.

No, but let's be honest: it was an easy line.
I hope the relievers are learning ways to stop Torre from using them. Farnsworth just says "No, I ain't pitching today" and no one has balls enough to tell him different. Proctor can get himself suspended. Bruney can go the Kevin brown punch the wall route. Vizcaino can just stand in the shadows.
BTW, I was listening to the Thursday game on the radio and Waldman and Sterling just made me want to vomit. They were trying to place some of the blame for the bullpen woes on Farnsworth because he doesn't pitch enough. Because his 72 appearances last year weren't enough. Apparently he's supposed to put himself out there to be raped like everyone else. It didn't occur to these two Torre sycophants that the way Torre uses relievers isn't fucking normal and not everyone can handle being put out there 4 out of 5 days.

Any else notice or care Igawa optioned to A-ball Tampa farm team. (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=204233)
Thats fine, but who the fucks gonna be the 5th starter till Clemens and Hughes get back? They kept Rasner with the team, so I guess he's the 4th. Desalvo?
Plus there's a 10 day rule, that you cant bring a pitcher back for 10 days once you send him down, so I guess they wanted Rasner and DeSalvo around more than Igawa.
I suspect Igawa comes back and ends up in the bullpen. He's making too much $ to stay in A ball for very long.

Farnsworth pitched great tonight. Got two outs. Then gave up a hit on a broken bat blooper. Inning should have been over on the caught stealing but then gave up another bloop hit on a pitch the Johjima barely hit. It was just really bad luck for him.

Exactly. And its tough to get on Farnsworth after what happened with Mo, anyway.
That was the worst blown call I've seen this year. I knew it was a bad call BEFORE the replay, at regular speed. He was called safe because he was tagged high, on his butt. But the entire play happened about 5 feet from the bag. Just awful.
Most of the time Umps call where the guy is tagged, and they're usually right. But this should have been obvious if the ump was just paying attention.
Yanks are guarenteed to lose tonight. Mattingly to manage due to Torre being suspended. Let the Mattingly curse continue

DECISION DUE ON VILLONE (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/09/sports/baseball/09pins.html?_r=1&ref=baseball&oref=slogin)
The Yankees could lose Ron Villone if they do not promote him soon. Villone, who pitched in 70 games for the Yankees last season, has 23 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with a 1.66 earned run average. Villone, who earned a save last night, has a clause in his contract that allows him to become a free agent on May 15.
Do you bring him back? He's a lefty, and you cant have enough of those. Plus he's a fresh arm and gave the Yanks some big performances last year. Some even in LONG relief.
Put it this way, who would you rather have, Villone or Colter Bean? I say Villone. He's a veteran, he's a gamer. If he has anything left, I'll take him.

Is Mussina on a strict pitch count? I don't see why Torre would take him out after 85 with a 4 run lead and then use 5 pitchers to finish the night off. Who of course include Rivera even though he's in a no save situation with an afternoon game today. What the HELL is Joe thinking?
7fttall500+
05-10-2007, 07:52 AM
Well they say Rivera pitched to get some work in so he is not rusty when they really need him and as far as Mussina goes, yes he is on a pitch count the next game they want him around 85-95 pitches. With him history has shown that when he gets to 100 for whatever reason he just loses his stuff.

Clemens to make minor league start next week (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2868194)
Yankees manager Joe Torre said Friday that the seven-time Cy Young Award winner will make his first start for Class-A Tampa either next Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
They're saying he'll only need 3-4 starts to get ready, since he's in good shape. I hope its not June 1-2 against the Red Sox, thats just too much too soon, he could get clobbered and then everyone will be saying he's a 28 mil bust off one dopey start. Hopefully they let him get his feet wet vs the Pirates June 8-10.
I know the Yanks want to beat the Red Sox, but just line up your big 3 for that series and skip Clemens. I look at Roger as a 4th starter on this team anyway, at 45 I dont know if you can expect much more than that.
Dan 'Hampton

Given how many trades/free agents have NOT worked for the Yanks, I'd be fine sticking with the kids. THere's no adjustment period New York-wise, this is all they've ever known. Jason Stark from ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2865873)
• The next time you hear someone say Clemens can't possibly be as good in the American League as he was in the National League, toss these numbers into the discussion: It's true Clemens feasted on the bottom of those NL lineups. No. 8 and No. 9 hitters batted a combined .162 against him last year, with one home run. But wait. Those No. 3 and No. 4 hitters were actually worse (.143, with no homers, against him in 98 at-bats, with 31 strikeouts and only 14 hits). So what does that tell us?
"He didn't lead the NL in ERA for no reason," his old catcher in Houston, Brad Ausmus, told Rumblings. "The difference is that the quality of the NL 3- and 4-hole hitters is comparable to the 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-hole hitters in many AL lineups. So, facing two very good hitters every time through the lineup is tougher than facing four. And it is certainly tougher to pitch around four tough hitters than two tough hitters." All good points. But we need to remember, Ausmus said, that this applies "to all pitchers, not just Rocket."
• Finally, before we assume the addition of Clemens automatically elevates the Yankees back into the race, remember that until he shows up, the only benefit the Yankees will get out of this signing for the next three weeks is all psychological. Which may explain why, in the words of one baseball man, "I've never seen a team so collectively happy to pay anybody so much money." But in the meantime, says one scout, "they still have to survive and hang with Boston till Roger arrives. And whether they can do that will be up to the bullpen. The way they've been going, Joe may kill the 'pen before Roger ever gets there."
Maybe someone can explain that line by Ausmus to me, I think its a misprint. The rest of it made sense.
Kevin
