He gave up a single and then a double and looked like he was losing it. If this wasn't his first start of the season I would have liked him to work through it. But of course Torre would have taken him out regardless.

Here's a bit of news that will make Yankee fans happy: Randy Johnson's first start ended with a line of 5IP, 6H, 4BB, 6 ER, 7 Ks.
I thought I'd be happier but frankly, the guy pitched a hell of a lot of innings through a lot of injuries. He was rarely his great self but he always took the ball. He just never had enough left in the tank by the postseason to do anything meaningful.

I think its smart for him, whatever what he ultimately does. Take the opt-out speculation off the table and let people just talk about his play, which is phenomenal.
I still highly doubt he'll get more than 27 mil per from anyone, anyway. So its all just more of the drama that surrounds A-Rod.

"The great story we were talking about the other night was that famous red stocking that he wore when they finally won, the blood on his stocking," Thorne told broadcast partner and Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer, according to media reports.
"Nah," Thorne said. "It was painted. Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR. Two-ball, two-strike count."
Two innings later, according to media reports, Thorne explained Mirabelli had told him the story "a couple of years ago."
"Go ask him [Mirabelli]," Thorne said.

..and it didn't spark conversation in any of them.
What does Gary Thorne do now? He basically has to call Schilling and Mirabelli liars or back down and say that he was mistaken.

Comparing any young pitcher to a young Gooden is totally unfair.
From what I've read just about everywhere, he throws 90-94 and is very polished (great control and poise) for a pitcher his age.
If he's decent at all, he'll be the first 1st round draft pick the Yankees have put in the majors (as a regular) since Jeter.

That's sorta my point. Just let the kid pitch. Comparing him to Gooden and Clemens isn't going to help him at all.

I agree. People love to make comparisons though. It certainly doesn't make it any easier playing for NY and having so many writers/radio/tv sports reporters searching for a unique angle on him.

Another thing about Hughes. Dont expect to be blown away by his stuff. He has very good stuff, but its not eye popping from what I hear. The reason why people are so high on him is his COMMAND of his very good stuff and his maturity and baseball IQ, which is rare for someone his age. His curve was rated the best in the minors, his fastball is consistently 92ish with good late movement and his changeup is good, but needs work. He's almost there.

A-Rod's opt out from Jason Stark (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2849474)
OK, now let's remember something else: It has been 6½ years since A-Rod signed his original deal for $25.2 million a year, Manny Ramirez signed for $20 million a year and Derek Jeter signed for a tick under $19 million a year.
How many position players since then have signed for $25 million a year? Zero. How many have signed for $20 million a year? Also zero. How many have even signed deals averaging $19 million a year? Right you are. Nada.
For whatever reason, long-term position-player contracts have boomeranged southward since then. And nobody has nudged past $18 million a year.
"I think he can get to 20 [million]," said one baseball man. "But 25? Let's just say there would be enormous pressure on clubs not to get to 25."
So who, exactly, would be applying that pressure? C'mon, friends. This isn't that tough. How much moaning, publicly and privately, have the commissioner and some of his favorite owners done over the years about insane signings and misguided contracts?
On the other hand, if the Yankees were to extend A-Rod, they could spin this differently than any other team. That's because only they can factor in the $81 million he has coming over the next three seasons under his current deal.
Take that money, add a five-year extension for $119 million, and you've got $200 million for eight years. But the Yankees could argue that the extension averaged out to just $23.8 million a year -- so they got him for a (gulp) discount. Yeah, right.
He forgot to note that the Yanks dont pay 30 of the 81 remaining, so the extension would actually cost them 170 over 8 years, about 21 per. Which is what Jeter and Giambi are making. And A-Rod still gets his 27 per for the last 3 years, something its very doubtful he'll get on the open market. Best of both worlds for A-Rod.

After he bangs his sister..
Oh well. Unless he gets a double play here I doubt he's gonna finish this inning. Still I think he showed he's better than anyone right now other than Pettite and Wang. He's just not gonna give a lot of innings due to pitch count/inexperience. I think he earned one more start at least.

This makes 6 in a row.
The Yanks should have the pitching matchups going into the weekend series, plus they're at home. But with the way they're playing, and the way the bullpen is performing you cant have any confidence.
Lets go with the doomsday scenario for arguments sake. Yanks lose 9 straight, 6 to the hated Bosox. They are 8-15 on Monday which is an off day, 9 games behind the Red Sox and 2 games behind the Devil Rays for last place. Which may piss off George even more than the Red Sox situation since he lives in Tampa.
We all know that Torre's job is safe, barring a disaster. Does this qualify as a disaster? I'm on record as wanting Torre out last year, so I can only hope so. But I doubt it, he'll have to put a similar record up in May to get there, then I think George will have had it. And he'll have the injuries to his pitching staff as an excuse, even though his use of the bullpen (only trusting 2 guys) has compounded the problem. And while he couldn't control the injuries, he could control his running Proctor and Viscaino into the ground in April and tried to stretch out his starters more given the state of his bullpen.

Call you up in the middle of the night
Like a firefly without a light
You were there like a blowtorch burning
I was a key that could use a little running
So tired that I couldn't even sleep
So many secrets I couldn't keep
Promised myself I wouldn't weep
One more promise I couldn't keep
It seems no one can help me now
I'm in too deep there's no way out
This time I have really
led myself astray
Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a oneway track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seems worth while?
How on earth did I get so jaded?
Life's mystery seems so dated
I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just drownin' in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train
Everything is cut and dry
Day and night
earth and sky
Somehow I just don't believe it
Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a oneway track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Solo
Bought a ticket for a runaway train
Like a madman laughin' at the rain
A little out of touch
little insane
It's just easier than dealing with the pain
Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a oneway track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Runaway train never comin' back
Runaway train tearin' up the track
Runaway train burnin' in my veins
Runaway
but it always seems the same

Of course not. Mr Selfish cant let someone else get the spotlight. He cant help show him around, it will take away from this "being his town".
And yes people Hughes sister is very hot. She looks classy, sexy and in her mid to late 20's (perfect for me)
I hope they keep this kid up. At times he looked really good and at time he looked avg, that could just be nerves. If your going to bring him up, keep him up just keep him on a good pitch count and let him pitch. Id rather see him stay up then the yanks trading for some over priced shit bag who wouldnt do any better then hughes.

No, but I did post why I have no love for him.
Then you are just as bad as the A-Rod bashers last year. Just because you are going after another target and are standing alone doesn't separate you. He's putting up his typical performance besides that spurt of errors the first week. No amount of "leadership" from him is going to give talent to Igawa, Wright, Karstens and Rasner. It's not going give the bullpen arms of steel. It's not going to keep Wang and Mussina healthy. It's not going to solve the mystery of Carl Pavano. He doesn't deserve blame by default whenever the Yanks struggle.

Am I the only refreshed by seeing a starter who looks like he can strike out guys on a regular basis? When he struck out the first two guys in that one inning it dawned on me I couldn't remember the last time a Yankee starter had done that. This season it has seemed like Bruney was the only guy on the team who could get strikeouts.

Both look young, But Paps is a fag, and 26, so F him.. I really liked what i saw out of this kid.. He looked poised, His fastball got up to 95, but even at 91 92, it had life.. His curve was freaking nasty.. He needs work on his change.. But this Kid when he fully matures, is going to be a dominant pitcher.. If your going to limit the guy to 80-90 pitches, then he is not ready, and send him back down, until he can give you 100 or more.. He does not have full control of his stuff yet, and is going to throw a ton of pitches.. So your just
t wasting him, having him go 5 inns, 6 if your lucky.. So i say send him back down, and get him fully ready.. Thats just my take.. But i think he is going to be a stud.

My wife (Yankees fan) says its because of his shiney coarse asian hair. I just say its fabulous.
Side note: How do your asians get away with the mops they sport? George should be down there with a buzzer.

You've been trying to shed Manny's 20 mil since Theo got there, now you're going to spend 30 on one player? Keep dreaming.
I'm not one of the Sox fan's that want him on the team. I fully believe that they don't win with A-Rod on the team. He will opt.
Looks like Igawa and his 7+ ERA are off to the pen. They could use another arm out there seeing as the team is pulling 4+ innings a night out of them. Until he can get better control of his pitches, he stands no chance of even moderate success (a regular #4-5 starter) in the majors.
Hughes looked pretty good last night, all things considered. Who would have guessed the Yankees offense wouldn't plate any runs. That's been the only part of the game they've struggled with all year. I figured they would be able to work Burnett for a few, considering he's been walking every other batter this season.

I never complained about Jeter as not being a good player, thats not why I dont like him. So I'm not like arod haters, arod haters think he should get a hit everytime hes in a clutch spot. If the yanks lose by 1 run and Arod struck out with Damon on 2nd in the 5th inning, people say "see he left damon stranded, its Arods fault" God forbid the dont win every game. Its not just playoffs that people bitch about with arod. It has also been regualr season games. The guy cant win no matter what he does.
Right now Arod is on fire, wait til he goes in a little slump. Wow the shit will hit the fan. I cant wait to hear "Who cares what Arod did in April he's 2-22 this week" It will come and all the Arod haters will spit their shit soon.
In the past Arod got booed whenever he would strike out or make an error all year and he was coming off an MVP season. No matter what Jeter does people always give him a pass. He has made 6 or 7 errors already and hes not hittin any of the runs in. He only has 6 rbi's on pace for 48. He does have 17 runs mainly b/c arod is a beast and hits him home. If Arod had 7 errors already people would be going nuts, like they did opening day when he had an error.

I'm actually conflicted, for the first time ever as a Yankee fan. I REALLY REEEAAALLY want Torre fired, I'm just sick of his face at this point. I don't want Mattingly to replace him, thats Torre-lite. I would love to see Girardi. I have this fantasy of the Yankees getting swept, Torre being fired on Monday (BTW-An off day, perfect timing to do it). Then Mattingly gets offered the job, but he turns it down because he knows he's not ready (something he's intimated in interviews during spring training) and so they go to plan B, Joe Girardi. The Yanks then go on a tear playing Joey-ball, hit Manny and Ortiz 5 times each per game, and make the greatest comeback in history, overcoming a 15 game deficit in August as the Red Sox melt in the heat of the summer, as usual. We hang the elusive #27 and Girardi goes on to be the greatest manager in Yankee history since Joe McCarthy, winning 14 championships over the next 20 years.
And then I wake up.

Thats just bullshit baby shit and that why people hate yankee fans.
People who live in NY but are Red Sox fans should be able to go to a game without worrying if they are going to be beat up or soiled by beer. Same goes for Yankee fans living in Boston.
I went to the Nets vs Spurs NBA Championship game a few years ago. Some spurs fan got a beer poured on him b/c he was cheering for his team. I would say 90% of the people in our section thought that was fucked up and a few nets fan pointed the assholes out and they were thrown out. I felt bad for the guy. They said on the post game that Guidry had him work from the stretch the entire game, and that gave him more consistency with his control.
Also, I'm not sure why this is or if there are any stats on it, but we seem to have always had more luck with lefties vs the Bosox. Maybe you do better vs Big Papi and then can pitch around Manny.

I dont think one win will change the way Steinbrenner feels about the way this team is playing. They're still in last place, behind the Devil Rays. I do think he needs to win tomorrow's game (Wang vs Tavarez) to get off the hot seat for a while. If they take the series at home from Boston, it'll be tough to fire him an Monday. By all accounts, Torre was fired by Steinbrenner after the Detroit loss and was talked out of it a few days later. Madden said he was sitting next to Steinbrenner when George said Torre's out.
That lil' event also gave us the unforgettable Snoogans Car, so even though Torre didn't get fired some good came out of it.

I've said this CONSISTENTLY. Forget about spending a shit load of money at first base. You stick that steroid monster at DH, keep that fat fuck out of the field. You sign Mientkievicz for peanuts. Not only does he have great defense, he's an offensive powerhouse. He'll win you games singlehandedly! He's that good. He's an artist with the bat.
I remember you saying just that.. I think it was one day in Dec... You said, SIGN THIS MAN FOR GOD'S SAKE.. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR CASHMAN!!..
You are just AMAZING!!!
AJ, are you just busting balls or serious? Mazzili is currently doing TV for the Mets, and didn't distinguish himself as mgr of the O's. Actually, he had/has a reputation for being a dick and his players hated his guts.
Girardi, on the other hand won Mgr of the Year in his first year with a team that everyone picked for dead last.
No, I was being serious. I didn't know that was the deal with Mazz. I didn't know he was doing TV for the Mets and I threw him out there just because of his former stint as a coach with the Yanks.
Don't I feel the fool.

I think Torre's back on the hotseat. 7-3, bats are listless, bullpen's overworked as usual.
I agree with Kev, he did the same thing with Wang's last outing. He only threw 81 last time. Dont bitch about how overworked the bullpen is when you take all your starters out after 80 pitches. Even Igawa yesterday could have gone another inning (threw 80-something).
They just gave a stat on YES that Proctor leads the majors in appearences (15) and three guys are tied for second, Myers Viscaino and Henn with 14. Alot of that is the problems with the rotation, but Torre has added to it by not stretching out his starters more and using Farnsworth, Bean and even Mo more. 3 guys are underworked , and 4 are overworked. That's just mismanagement of your resources.
On a happier note, YES just announced that Mercer will rejoin the team for the Texas series, and work a full schedule from here on out. Good for him, I wish him all the best.

I just looked at the standings and only 2 teams have less wins then the yanks. Washington and KC and they only have 1 less win. I was a little surprised. I know the yankees are having a bad start to the season, but it was shocking to see it was worse then I thought. 6 1/2 back on the sox already. Clemens will ask for $30- $40 mill knowing the yanks may pay it.
Before you people go nuts, whatever Clemens signs for it is for a whole season they then take away time not played. So if the yanks were to give him 40 mil he would only get around 20mil. I know signing him to that much sounds crazy but IMO without a stud pitcher they will not ever make the playoffs. I say its worth it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Clemens
"Clemens signed a contract worth $22,000,022 (his uniform number is #22), which would have been the highest one-year deal in MLB history. But since Clemens did not play a full season, he received a prorated percentage of that: approximately $12.25 millioon"

Abreu leading off tonight, oh man.
If he wasn't so damn ice cold recently I would love this move. Philly wanted to do this to him for the past few years because Rollins takes about as many pitches as Soriano used to. But since the players ran that team, no one did anything they didn't want to.
Now that Bobby's power has seemingly vanished and he's more open to doing what is right for the team, he a perfect leadoff guy...takes as many pitches as anyone in baseball, same with walks, usually a .300+ hitter, can steal a base once he's on giving Jeter, Rodriguez, Giambi, etc., more fastballs to look at. Maybe this even breaks him out of his slump.

As I said in a PM to Gvac, for all you know, Hughes could get a blood clot in his leg and die tomorrow. I'm not saying it could or will happen, but it's possible, however remote the chance. Before you say "whatever", remember Chris Candido?
You want to pick on Yankee fans? Fine. Doing it at the expense of a 20-year-old kid who was pitching his fucking heart out, working a no-hitter in his goddamned second major league start, who was forced to leave the game simply because he was PITCHING TOO HARD? That's just stupid and ass-backwards. And it's especially big fucking words from you, considering your goddamned team doesn't even have a no-hitter to it's credit to flaunt.
Perhaps my words were cruel, and for that, I even feel bad about it. But Phil Hughes gave ever single ounce of himself tonight, and for that he should be commended, no matter what fan of what team you are. Your comment, in jest or not, was totally classless, stupid, and basically unsportsmanlike, "joshing" an opposing team or not.
Even SPOON, who is as fucking Anti-Yankee as they come on this board, wouldn't say shit about someone's injury.
