I think the bullpen is much deeper (and with power arms) than it's been in years. Bruney, Proctor, Farnsworth and Vizcaino. Thats four good guys for the 7th and 8th. Plus Myers and Henn for the occasional lefty. I just dont see them getting their arms blown out this year.
But the starters have to do their part, of course.

Pavano.. and Mussina on DL....
Shocking...
Pavano and Mussina just hit the DL. They recalled Chris Britton (Acquired in the Jaret Wright trade). The second call up was very interesting. They passed over the entire Scranton starting rotation and called up Chase Wright from Trenton who will start Wednesday. Wright was impressive in Spring Training.
Hopefully Pettitte can go long today as Torre doesn't want to use Proctor, Bruney, Farnsworth or Vizcaino. I can't see any circumstances under which he'd use Bruney or Farnsworth. Britton is already with the team.

I don't think Wang will be ready by Sunday. They wanted him to get another rehab start later in the week. He wouldn't have enough rest to start by Sunday.

so do they give Wright another go?
We'll see. Wang was very sharp in his first rehab outing. Since he's throwing the ball, you might as well have him throw it for the Yanks, given the state of their rotation. But you might also like the idea of throwing a lefty at the Red Sox, and give Wright a go.
My guess is Wang. His injury was never that serious to begin with, it was a grade 1. On most other teams he would have been out a week to ten days, the Yanks are just always very cautious with these things because they can afford to be.

Dammit. With the way the bullpen has been getting worked you have to at least let Igawa TRY and get through another inning. You have a fucking 7 run lead. If Igawa immediately craps the bed you can take him out. He's only thrown 92 pitches.

agreed, i didnt understand the move when it happened. it seemed so logical to me to leave him in for another inning. then proctor comes in, while Kay lets us know he's appeared in 9 of 13 games so far.

Weeeeeeelllll.. He did have his hr when we were up like 5 runs.. K'd with a runner on 3rd in he 1st...
Kidding...
By the way.. Way to give your pitcher Igawa a ringing endorsement.. When asked by Kim Jones if Igawa was going to be good, from what you have seen.. He said, I don't know.. We will see later on.. And HBOX.. Thats Torre for ya.
And neither Proctor nor Farnsworth are getting anywhere near 100, let alone the upper 90s as usual. Procotr has been dealing with it, Farnsworth has not. And of course Villone was all but handed a spot in the bullpen but was so awful in Spring Training that Henn beat him out easily. Thanks for last year.
I predict Vizcaino will be useless this time next year thanks to Torre. Hopefully the bullpen depth will limit the body count this year.

when hasnt he performed well? He was an MVP of the league as a yankee and has produced every year for this team. He just hasnt been clutch in the playoffs. I think if he has a huge playoff He will know that he is going to be treated great here.. He will always have a chance to win.. We have young guys especially pitchers coming up.. and he can't go any higher on endorsements than being a Yankee.. Plus he is a huge baseball history guy.. And who else would u want to break the HR record with, than the Yankees??

He has. I know no one believes anything he actually says, but he's said repeatedly that either he performs well and gets the fans on his side, or "New York will run me out of town" and "Its up to the fans"
With the way he's performing, the fans have nothing to boo, and he's winning many over with these clutch HR's and walk offs. If you take him at his word, and not at the words everyone else is putting in his mouth for him, he'll be here next year.

Also, do you actually believe someone will give him MORE than 27 mil for the next 3 years? I dont.

I listened to that live on the radio. That was maybe the most unbelievable comeback I can remember the Yanks having EVER, and the greatest since the 86 Mets in the Bill Buckner game (Yes, Met fans. Yours was better since it was a WS game).
It was 2 outs in the 9th, they really had no business winning that game. Even after the Phelps HR and Posada and Jeter got on, I still thought it was meaningless. I didn't believe it was possible until Abreau got his his hit. I actually felt bad for A-Rod as he came to the plate, thinking there's NO WAY he can keep up his torrid April. He already had a rough day (0-4) and he's only human. I'm thinking "Fuck, he makes out here and half the place will go right back to booing him." And then. . . . . . . . . unbelievable. I sat in my car screaming for 5 minutes.
This is why we watch Baseball. You never know what the fuck will happen.

I just watched the end of the encore of that game. Holy Shit!! They were down to the last strike of the inning 3 times. What a fucking amazing rally!!! A-rod topped it off perfectly but there was alot of clutch hits that added up. The last pitch Damon took was a close one too, not a ball but hard to take with 2 outs in the 9th. What a great game.

No its not. Though I know everyone seems to think it is.
Wikipedia
2005-2006: Los Angeles Dodgers
In December 2004, Drew signed a 5 year, $55 million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which included an escape clause after the second year. Roughly halfway through the 2005 season, Drew's season was again cut short after being hit on the wrist by a pitch from Arizona Diamondbacks' pitcher Brad Halsey.
In 2006, Drew exercised his contract option clause, forgoing $33 million over the next 3 years to become a free agent. The Dodgers' General Manager Ned Colletti said in a teleconference that he was "surprised how it came down. Everything we had heard, everything that had been written led us to believe the player loved being here."[1] This was especially a surprise since a few days before, Drew had told an LA Times columnist on how happy he was in LA and that he was looking forward to the upcoming 2007 season.
[edit] 2007: Boston Red Sox
On January 25, 2007 Drew officially signed a 5 year contract with the Red Sox worth $70 million.

If A-Rod opts out he will get 8 years 160 as opposed to 3 years 81 million. Seems like 79 million more to me plus he'll probably have another opt out included.

Humberto Sanchez gets Tommy John (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2843456)
Another injured Yankees pitcher, right-hander Humberto Sanchez, had elbow ligament-replacement surgery Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season.
Forget about this guy. Even when they come back the following year, they're not 100%.
From the same article about Pavano
Yankees starter Carl Pavano has a mild strain in his right elbow and is expected to begin throwing off flat ground within the week.
Pavano had an MRI exam Thursday that revealed the strain. The right-hander was placed on the disabled list Sunday, retroactive to April 10.
"He's getting treatment," general manager Brian Cashman said. "He's feeling better every day."
Pavano was scratched from his scheduled start last Saturday with tightness in his forearm. He felt the problem in his pitching arm during his start April 9 against the Twins and informed the Yankees afterward. He threw seven innings in an 8-2 win over Minnesota Twins, giving up six hits and two runs for his first victory since May 22, 2005.

What you dont get is this. He should opt out b/c if he doesnt he will get 27 mill for the next 3 years after that he will be 35. He may feel he will not get a contract of 5 years 80 or 90 mil. So by opting out, he may get less per year but guarantee an extra 80-100 mil for the rest of his career. If he doesnt and gets hurt hes screwed.
There is a reason that almost every analyst has said he probably will opt out. Not just to leave but to get more money. I think he should opt out and go to the cubs. He has never been appreciated here. Right now everyone is loving him. Lets see what happens if he goes 1-15 and strikes out or pops up with a chance to beat the red sox this weekend. He will get booed the very first ab at home.

Arod is delivering for you guys... In april. If I'm you I worry more about the fact that Boras is his agent and not at all about what he says. The better he does this year the more it makes sense to opt out, like was said on here before and get a longer contract. Not bashing anyone here but those are the facts. And when you're making 20 mil a year you're not all that worried about endorsements. What national endorsements would he lose? The only one I can think of is his stupid baseball in a pepsi truck. I'm guessing he's playing SS on the northside next April.

I dont know what Flaherty was looking at last night, but he kept saying "Mo's stuff is fine, its just the location". True, he missed his spots on some pitches but I saw the radar gun at 89-91 MPH consistently for Mo. He's usually around 93-95. Not a good sign for a 37 year old pitcher with a slight build.
This could explain why he was working on his change up in spring training.
And why he was in such a rush to get an extension.

I know everyone assumes that, but I dont see it happening. Clemens is old and I dont think he can handle the American League lineups at this point. The Yanks will bid, but just to drive up the price for the others.
The Yanks stockpiled on young arms in the off season, and I think they'll use them to swing a mid season deal, if necessary. CC Sabathia and Carlos Zambrano might become available, among others.

Yea, out scored us by only 3 runs with their best 3 pitchers going, against 2 aa rookies for us.. Not to mention an ailing Damon, no posada or Matsui.. Yea thats a face alright.. That was the most unimpressive sweep ever..
I have decided to rescind my complaints about Torre's bullpen management so far this season and will not criticize any further until the starters are back and putting together decent starts. The pitching situation so far has been a completely unmanageable mess and even if Torre handled it perfectly there would be only be marginal improvements. Pettitte and Wang will need to start eating innings. Pavano will too if he ever gets back. Those are the only three starters who can be counted on going long IMO. Igawa and Mussina seem like 7 inning max pitchers to me right now. The bullpen has gone from great to awful in less than a month and it's the fault of bad starting pitching.
Matsui's back tomorrow and he's needed. Cabrera has been hitting horribly, barely better than Mientkievicz. Let Matsui get back on track and don't worry about getting Melky playing time; he's gotten a lot so far. Give him some time to figure his bat out.
After the way this team has played I'm surprised they have this record. They need to pick it up and hope the bullpen can recover.

I was scarred for life after that.
Seriously though, if Melky could overcome his nightmare series in Fenway I think Wright will be OK.
Here's the thing though: A reason Wright was brought up and the Yanks skipped all of the AAA starters was not just his impressive spring training and early season. He was already on the 40 man roster. None of the AAA starters were. Bringing up one of the AAA starters, all of whom are not only arguably better now but have better potential, would have required the Yanks to place them on 40 man roster and start their arbitration clock. That probably wasn't the deciding factor. None of the AAA pitchers at the time Wright was brought up were doing that well in AAA. But it is worth considering after tonight's spontaneous batting practice session broke out.

I agree with every word. Minus A-Rod and this team would likely be around 5-12 instead of 8-9. But no team can lose 3/5 of its rotation and prosper.
I do however, think that if Girardi was managing the team they would be doing better. If for no other reason he wouldn't let his stars get treated like pin cushions. If Manny and Papi had a little fear at the plate, the REd Sox hitting could go to pieces. It amazes me that a team SO reliant on two hitters gets away with murder.

Hip Hip, can't make a play at the plate
I wonder if A-Rod mutters 'fuck Jeter' to himself everytime he trots around the bases.
Just amazing to watch...funny thing is, it still can't stop the Yanks race to the cellar.
I'm not going to knock Torre on the bullpen but what the fuck is Melky doing batting leadoff? Is a .200 average good enough for him? What could be the possible explanation for putting him in a position where he of all people could get more at bats than anyone else on the team? There's so many thing you could do. Bat Jeter 1 and Cano 2. Bat Abreu 1 and Giambi 3. Even though he draws one walk a month Cano is a better leadoff guy than Melky. At this point Melky shouldn't be anywhere but the bottom 3.

Only made worse by pinch hitting Damon for Phelps instead of Melky... Phelps has been hitting well, Melky, auto out.. Then he replaces Melky on the field, with Damon... Made no sense, what so ever.

Arod was the blame for everything, now hes a god. Melky was the 2nd coming of christ now hes a bum. Torre was the greatest manager since stangel, now he doesnt know what he doing. There are so many other flip flops here except....
Jeter! Is he the only one who is off limits? He has 6 errors, and only 6 rbis this year. He has done nothing, but no one calls him out. Why is that? If this was Arod doing this there would be 50 more pages talking shit about how Arod sucks.
The amazing thing will be that Arod will have the greatest season of his career, win the MVP and the yanks wont even make the playoffs.
Who will be to blame. Torre? The pitchers, The GM? Steinbrenners ex son in law? (just b/c his divorce was a mind fuck not b/c he really did anything) Arod b/c he didnt pitch? Jeter? No never.

So we can't bring up awful moves, and players hitting 200?? Yankees will most def make the playoffs.. They are 8-10 with 3 Sp out.. and the starting LF.. They will get healthy and roll.. Shit, The Redsox had their top 3 guys going, and they only out scored us by3.. With an abomination pitching staff.. Lets see how Hughes does.. If he is the real deal.. He and Wang, will stabilize the staff. Go watch what Jeter has done for the franchise.. And then you will know why he is off limits.

Why bitch about a guy hitting .316 and has 17 runs this year? If you watched their games this year neither the offense or errors are the problem. Its just starting pitching.

For the record I have consistently defended A-Rod, was cautious in "annointing" Melky and have always been critical of Torre's bullpen management.
Jeter's role is not to drive in runs but get on base. And with an anemic bottom of the lineup and Damon being in and out of the lineup and inconsistent when in the lineup he hasn't had many chances to drive in runs. He is coming off a season when he deserved to win the MVP, is batting .316 and has a .389 OBP, has reached base in every single game and has a hit in all but one game. To place any blame on him with this kind of pitching suggests some sort of dementia.

What other options did he have? Spend even more money than on Igawa on Ted Lilly or Gil Meche? Jason Schimdt? Barry Zito? The market was atrocious for starting pitching. Matsuzaka was the only pitcher worth it.
I think he did fine with the market. At least there are lots of options in the minors. If Hughes isn't ready there's Ohlendorf or Clippard or Jackson. If shit really gets bad they have trading chips below Hughes.
But I still hate Igawa's signing. I tried to be optimistic but I always felt like he couldn't make it. Even in his two good starts I was surprised he didn't get hit. I am petrified as to what the Red Sox will do to him this weekend.

he hasnt helped anything yet, he may actually hurt the yanks. I do think he should be ok. He is only 21 or so and never been called up. I am picking him up in my fantasy league hoping he does well.
I know it doesnt sound like it but I grew up a yanks fan and loved this team my whole life. I have just been so negative towards the team b./c I havent liked most of the free agent signings the past few years and how they try to buy a world series rather then build a team via draft and the minors like they did in the 90's.
I have also turned sour on the yanks b/c of fans who think they are entitled to a series win and who have bashed Arod. Arod is one of my favorite players in the league since 96. I hate how he isnt given credit but Jeter is a god. Now I understand Jeter has been a yank since 18 and has been a key to winning 4 WS but I have never liked him. Not b/c of basbeball but he used to date one of my ex's (no joke) He dated her before me and then we ran into him at a club and he tried to play the big shot. Its a long story but I did run into him a couple years later with another one of my gf's in little italy and we talked a little and left it alone. But he has always ercked me. OK . . . . .lets get this straight. According to you, if a Yankee fan criticizes a player, he's a flip flopper. And if he DOESN'T criticize a player he's playing favorites. So no matter what the Yankee fan does he's wrong, just for different reasons. Sounds fair to me.

It seems to be the flavor of the day to blame Cashman for the Yankees pitching woes, but you said it perfectly. In almost every case anyone can cite, there was no better option available. And the Red Sox offer to Matsuzaka caught everyone off guard in a blind bidding process. I still think they overpaid, and badly.
When the Yanks signed Igawa, they hinted that he might end up in the bullpen. If Hughes impresses, he might be there sooner rather than later.

No your wrong, according to me sometimes there is no blame things just dont work out or the other team is just better. What I was saying is people are so hard on Arod for no reason, yeah he choked during the playoffs but he wasnt the only reason the team lost. He was a big reason for why they made the playoffs in the first place. It bothers me that people look at the bad when it comes to Arod, but dont appreciate what he has done and does. As for the jeter part of your misunderstanding, what I was saying about that is, if your going to bitch about the things Arod does then Jeter should get the same treatment. I know you all wanna blow Jeter but he is no God he has made many mistakes during the season. When he has been in a slump or not doing well the other 8 starters pick him up and help get the wins. Those wins are what get you to the playoffs. When Arod slumps if the others dont lift him up and help them win why is it only his fault? Its not but all these yankee fans (fans since 96) think they deserve a series every year.
I was a fan since 1977-78 I stayed a fan through the Donny Baseball years of shit teams and no playoffs and no fan support. Dont you remember Steinbrenner wanting to move the team b/c " how can a team in NY especially the NY Yankees have such bad turn-outs" Because the real fans were going but the half ass fake fans only come around when they win. Anywyay, I never bitched about every player when they fucked up. I didnt blame their best player (Donny) everytime he didnt come up with that winning hit. Arod is by far the yeanks best player but hes not the only reason they lost or win.

Wang looks sharp, and has thrown only 27 pitches through 2 innings. If he can keep that up, he can go 8 and hand it to Mo.
BTW-Anyone else notice how sharp Mo looked last night? Blew away 2 hitters, hit 94 consistently on the gun. Good to see, I'll admit he has me worried with his two previous outings.
