Shush. If Igawa or Disalvo were pitching, Yankees would be down 6-0 and Viz would be pitching

Fair point, but considering what Clemens is making and the ridiculous hype surrounding him, the expectations are incredibly high.

You spoke too soon Z. I'm not expecting him to be the ace of this staff, but he gave you a solid effort today and actually got better as the game went on. I think of this as mid-march for him, he only had 2 starts in the minors before coming up. Overall, he was fine. Not great, but I expect him to get somewhat better over the next few starts. I still think he'll have all sorts of trouble vs deeper teams like Cleveland and Boston, but he'll keep you in a game which is more than a lot of the rookies were doing. Dont ask me to justify the $$, I cant do it. He's the worlds most expensive 4th starter, but he settles down the rotation and the bullpen should sort itself out from here as well. Once this team started hitting, things started falling into place.
BTW- The Yanks are back. You can feel it.

I dont even think the Yankees are expecting vintage Rog. They wanted the most reliable number 4 availible who can give them 6 innings. they just had to pay a shit load of cash for him. They know he isnt going to save the team by himself, but he is better than every option they have. Plus, in the playoffs he could really be huge

SHHHHHHH JINXY!! Don't go makin threads again..
Not at all, and thats why I thought it was actually a GOOD thing when he did, considering how bad he was hitting.
One thing, though. With the way A-Rod is hitting, there's really nobody in the lineup who can give him any protection. And in big spots in late innings he's just not going to get anything to hit (last night he was HBP), if they don't just go ahead and outright walk him. I don't think Posada will continue to hit like this, considering his position and his age. So finding someone to protect A-Rod and play 1st will become more important as the season progresses. Which means they need to go hard after Teixera. Teixera's a natural righty, but he's a switch hitter. So the lefty righty lineup thing will work, but not as smoothly as you'd hope. But the Yanks need a right handed power bat, so he's the guy to go after.
It IS just a coincidence. Everybody wasn't hitting before and they are now. Giambi wasn't singlehandedly breaking up big innings, half the lineup was shitting the bed all the time. Giambi isn't some sort of clubhouse cancer guy so it's not like the lack of his presence has all of a sudden made everyone comfortable. And this isn't a result of small ball. This team is putting up a lot of runs because everyone is hitting.
Like I said, this team would turn around as soon as the lineup started hitting. And that's exactly what Abreu, Cano, Damon and Melky have done. And it ironic that you say its great that Giambi's gone and then bemoan the fact that A-Rod has no protection. A healthy Giambi is exactly that. Hopefully he can return healthy.

Hitting is contagious, so is not hitting.
He wasn't hitting.
Also, you keep bringing up "small ball" and again, I never said the Yanks are or should be a small ball team. Small ball is the NL style playing for one run. What I said was w/o Giambi the Yanks become more of a singles and doubles team (with an occasional HR), a team that builds rallies. As opposed to the walk, single, then wait for the 3-Run HR team they were in recent years. Thats not small ball, and its not long ball. Its in the middle, just like the 98 team was. Plus, the lineup they have now is better defensively with Damon in the now cleared out DH slot and Melky in CF. Team building 101, defense up the middle.
As far as him coming back healthy, he's expected back sometime after Carl Pavano by all reports. Dont forget they collect insurance on him if he's on the DL. Thats 20+ million reasons to take your time with him.
As far as him providing protection for A-Rod, again, he wasn't healthy and wasn't hitting. Therefore he's of no use to the team and looking for him to get healthy is wishful thinking. He was one of the big steroid guys and that shit wreaks havoc on your tendons and joints, especially at his age (36) when many normal non-steroid players start breaking down.

im not arguing here with you but i have a serious question. i missed most of the game today, but werent the yanks doing things tonight like double stealing? i checked the box score and they had men stealing bases tonight like it was going out of style. stuff like that can be considered "small ball", it doesnt always have to do with bunting a man over. execution on plays like a double steal manufacture runs, which is what they should do and not relying on the patented michael kay "5-run home run". i remember last year after giambi was so down and they considered sending him to the minors he went on an absolute tear for like a month and everyone was on his cock, what swings the opinion so much from when hes cold to when he's hot?

I think the double steal stuff was a result of the amateur play in the field by the Pirates today. They couldn't do anything right.

First of all, feel free to argue with me whenever you want. Me and H get into it all the time but that doesn't mean I dislike him personally. Quite the contrary.
And yes, the Yanks have been running the bases more aggressively lately, including yesterday. Usually at the Torre Country Club guys run on their own, but I guess Torre actually has been doing some work lately.
As far as the Giambi stuff goes, I said at the time I thought it was a good thing he went on the DL considering he was playing hurt and not producing much, especially for a 3 or 4 hitter. Him being gone has changed the lineup some, but it also changes many hitter's "Job" at the plate. The guys hitting before him could have the approach of "Let me just get on base here, the big bats are behind me". With him out, A-Rod is really the only big bat they have in the lineup, so now each guy in the 2 or 3 hole (and to some extent the rest of the lineup) wants to drive the ball, takes it more on himself to make something happen. That helps build rallies. Also to be fair to Torre, he now knows he cant sit back and wait for the big blast, so he's got everyone running the bases more aggressively. Its a fundamental change in the approach of both the hitters and the manager. Other than that, nothing's changed, and its all "a coincidence".

OK thats 6 in a row, and 9 of the last 11. Boston just lost, so its 9 in the loss in the division. Detroit won (and big, over the Mets) so the wild card stays at 5 in the loss. Yanks are 1 game under .500.
Upcoming series are Arizona and the Mets next week. The rest of the month is Colorado, San Fran and Baltimore.
I know its a mistake to look at the schedule and start counting wins, which I'm not doing. But lets just say that this month the Yanks have an opportunity to get back in both races, and if they don't, there's no excuses.

Can Rocket rescue the Yankees? Simulate it (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2898563)
Interesting article. I really didn't give that much thought to the impact a 4th starter could have, but over the course of 4 months it can clearly be significant, especially over pitching some rookie like Desalvo who doesn't give you much of a chance to win.
I also think the addition of Hughes in August can net them a few more as well over what Clippard will give them. Clippard has been good despite todays performance, but Hughes looked like a real future top of the rotation type pitcher.

I don't recall saying that, but if I did, it was probably when we were starting 5 rookies a week.
Tonight is gonna be a great pitcher's matchup. Brandon Webb vs. Chien-Ming Wang. They are like mirror images of each other. Both have great sinkers, both pitch to contact, both work quickly and pitch deep. Can't wait to see it. I hope they are both on.

ie - Pulling Mussina after 79 pitches, using Proctor for 2 full innings in a complete blowout, and using Kyle Farnsworth, ever.
Fortunately, our offense has been rolling, so these moves haven't backfired recently.

Four long-winded points before I hit the hay:
1) A-Rod's shot was honestly one of the most crushed HR's I have ever seen. That thing was gonna go 600 feet if it didn't hit the facing of the upper deck. That shit was still going up when it got there.
2) I don't know what the word on Giambi is, and I hate to say it, but I am dreading the day he comes back. When he is healthy, he is dangerous. But his absence has made this Yankee team 1000x more versatile. Playing Melky in center gives us much stronger defense in the outfield AND has clearly helped his bat. Melky's arm has already saved us a run or two on a few occasions. DHing Damon has given his legs a rest, making him faster on the basepaths and a better hitter. The team is faster and plays more small ball without the hopes of Giambi hitting an 5-run HR.
3) The pitching and hitting are finally clicking in sync. We've gone around the rotation 1 1/2 times and haven't lost, because when the pitching is good, we score enough to win, and when the pitching is terrible, we score a shitload. Granted, we've been playing the Pirates and D-Backs, but let's not forget that this started on the road against Boston and Chicago. Now that we're winning, pitchers are going into games with the mindset of "I don't wanna be the one to fuck things up."
4) Has Torre taken a hint since getting booed off the field 2 weeks ago? In recent days, he has let Clemens go an inning more than people expected, Wang pitch a complete game, and Moose throw 101 pitches tonight. It's not very like Torre to actually be letting his starters go 7-8 innings, so someone must have had a good talk with him.
Let's hope Pettitte continues the trend tomorrow!
Doctor Z

Yo, how is Cairo so versatile? The guy can play ANY position in the infield, and do it exceptionally well. He can go from 1st to short to 3rd in 3 days and make impressive plays in all 3 games. Cairo is providing some incredible intangibles for this team right now.

2 points:
- Why the FUCK, after Perez issues 2 straight walks with nobody out, is Josh Phelps not laying down a MOTHERFUCKING BUNT in a 1-0 ballgame?! THIS IS FUCKING BASEBALL 101, WHERE THE FUCK IS TORRE?
- Clemens did his job tonight, the offense was abysmal. And I don't want to see Josh Phelps in a major league uniform ever again. He is 100% USELESS. The Yankees need to wake up and realize he has absolutely ZERO value to this team.
I'm gonna go throw up and roll around in it.

What the fuck is it with this team and lefties? Everyone in the lineup hits left handers, even the lefty hitters like Damon, Matsui and Abreau and Cano.
This is a tag that is starting to stick to this team, and could spell real trouble if they make it to the playoffs and have to deal with a tough lefty twice in a short series.

But I have a feeling that even if he bunted, he'd probably fuck it up by popping it up.
And Cano swinging at ball four didn't help at all in the late innings either.
Either way, I had a feeling the Yanks were not gonna win that game yesterday. Damn that "law of averages" and each team were DUE a win/loss.

A-Rod can't be stopped. If he keeps this up and we don't show him the money at the end of this year, it will go down as one of the worst moves in Yankee history. And Cairo continues to do all the little things for the Yankees, so far 2 for 3 with a stolen base and an RBI. He's a real role player. Such a relief to not see Josh Phelps in the lineup today.

Not that A-Rod has had a legitimately BAD year as a Yankee (by most players' standards), but this year, we are finally seeing the A-Rod that has been touted as the potential "greatest baseball player of all time." He is getting it done on both ends, offense and defense.
And yeah, Wang has thrown like 12 pitches over 2 innings. His shit is ON.

Again, Jon Miller just said that Wang is looking "ace-like"... I DON'T GET IT! Ace-LIKE?! Wang IS THE ACE of the staff! It's so fucking annoying how the media refuses to acknowledge how good Wang is. He's in his 3rd major league season, and still doesn't get the respect of an ace. If Wang's not the ace, then who is? WHO is a better starting pitcher on the Yankees? Pettite is very solid, but he's the #2 starter, and he doesn't consistently deliver 7, 8, 9 innings of 1-run or shutout ball. The sports media needs to wake the fuck up and realize Wang is not only the Yankees' ace, but he's one of the best pitchers in baseball.
...fuckin' "ace-like"...

Who knows how good these 2 are, but they're young (19) and you figure they'd have a high ceiling.

the Angels are still willing to move the 31-year-old Hillenbrand, batting .246 with three homers and 18 RBIs.
I dont see this happening. He's a better hitter than Miggy, but in 6 weeks when Meinkevietz (and possibly Giambi) comes back you'll have a log jam at the position. Plus Andy Phillips is hitting the ball well in AAA, has a good glove and MLB experience. I just don't see it as a big need, even if Cairo gets exposed over the next few weeks.

It's pretty shitty that our offense is basically asking Pettitte to pitch a shutout.
Why did we stop playing the kind of small ball we played during that 9-game streak? Why give up on something that was working? When Giambi and Mientkiewicz hit the DL, we started stealing, double-stealing, laying down bunts, singles and doubles, and suddenly we were on a 9-game tear (11 out of 12). But that philosophy seems to have gone out the window again, despite the success we had with it.

They didn't win because they played small ball. They won because everyone was hitting.

It's my belief that it's all contagious. When you're challenging the other team, drawing walks, running the bases aggressively and scratching runs across, the team plays better, hits better, pitches better, etc.

When was all this happening? All I remember is Jeter, Posada, A-Rod and Abreu hitting the shit out of the ball for two weeks. They were scoring shit loads of runs. Small ball is what you do when you need a late run or you have a team with crappy hitters and you need to make every base runner you get count. You don't sac bunt and steal your way into 8-9 run games. In the games the Yanks won in the last two weeks they scored 7, 5, 10, 5, 9, 13, 4, 7, 7, 11 and 8 runs.
But besides all that they haven't even had the opportunity to do any of that tonight. The situation never called for it.
I'm surprised Pettitte is still in there. The last 5 batters have hit the ball hard.

My point is, if every hitter in the lineup is pressing to swing for the fences, this is what happens... 1 run against Jeff Francis in Coors Field. You don't win with JUST homeruns. You pressure the other team, do the little things, and the HR's and other shit will come, which it did for those 2 weeks.
It's my belief that it's all contagious. When you're challenging the other team, drawing walks, running the bases aggressively and scratching runs across, the team plays better, hits better, pitches better, etc.
It's my belief that every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.
More realistically, before the win streak most of the batters were hitting terribly. It's as simple as that. Most batters were not playing to their levels, that was bound not to last all season, it didn't, and the Yanks started winning.
The game that started the Yanks win streak included no steals and no sac bunts. The second game had one steal and no sac bunts. The third game had one steal and no sac bunts.
However, Abreu went 5 for 11, Melky went 5 for 13, A-Rod went 7 for 13 and Jeter went 4 for 10 over that stretch.

What a fool I was to think this team had a chance during that 11-of-12 run. That run wasn't "the real Yankees." It was a fluke.
The all-or-nothing Yankees are back in full force. Once again, sub-par pitching, and NO ONE is hitting. 4 runs over a 3-game span in Coors Field. This shit is fucking EMBARRASSING.
How can anyone argue that hitting isn't contagious? It's happening right before our eyes. This team surges together and slumps together. Baseball is such a mental game. It's not just a coincidence that everyone all started hitting at the same time, and suddenly stopped hitting at the same time. These guys are fucked in the head.

Sterling beat this point to death, but he happened to be right about it. When Jeter lead off with the double in the 6th, you have to play ABC ball and get the run in. Hit the ball to the right, move him to 3rd and take 2 shots at it. You're not swinging the bats well, and you're playing in the NL. Abreau proceeded to strike out, then Jeter got picked off in a horrible running play on the A-Rod grounder. Just awful. It was 4-2 at the time, and as it turned out that play was decisive.
This team just doesn't make adjustments.

You can't play that way with the heart of your lineup coming up. They did it right later when Cano lead off with a double and they had shit hitters coming up. THAT'S the time to sac bunt. Not when you have your best hitters coming up. If you asked the Rockies what they wanted the Yanks to do they'd be ecstatic if they knew that Abreu would just give away an out.
And you can reverse the situation. If the guy batting before Helton leads off the inning with a double wouldn't you be glad if he laid down a bunt and gave himself up? I'd take that in a heart beat.

we just have fundamental differences in the way we see baseball.........i think you should bunt in that situation against an NL team. youre def right that they did it correctly with Cano doubling and then a bunt but in a series when youve scored barely any runs and you know youre in the NL, why not bunt there? especially when youre trying to salvage a game and you havent done well in previous big spots

When you have Abreu, A-Rod and Posada coming up you don't sac bunt. They are the best hitters on the team. You don't bunt with them. MAYBE if it is the ninth inning and you are down 1 and going against a great closer THEN you think about bunting. When you are down two in the sixth with a semi-reliable bullpen do you really want to give up any chances of a rally for a better chance for just one run? And its no sure thing. What if Abreu couldn't get the bunt down? What if A-Rod struck out? It's not even close to a sure thing.

First of all, I'm not asking Abreau to bunt (as some others have). I'm simply saying if you're Abreau in that spot you have to try to hit the ball to the right side. Maybe you get a hit, at worst you move the runner to third. Then A-Rod can look for something to drive and see what happens. As it turned out A-Rod hit a grounder, but had Jeter been on 3rd he could have zoned a different pitch.
H, I think there are more times besides 9th inning vs the closer where you can execute fundamentals. I'm not a big fan of giving up outs, and I love big rallies as much as the next guy. But you're in the NL, and they play "National League style ball" for a reason. In a tight game, on the road, in the NL its a no-brainer. Which is of course to say Torre didn't do his job as manager and remind anyone what to do.

I don't have a problem with Abreu not bunting, you should really expect that with a runner on second, and no outs, with your #'s 3, 4 & 5 batters coming up, you will get the run across. I think what happened to the Yankees is that they ran into 3 pitchers that were pitching pretty well, and they just could not make the necessary adjustments. I don't think this means that they are going to start playing lousey again, like the beginning of the season, this is just a bump in the road that they would normally experience. If the Yankees didn't dig such a hugh hole for themselves early on, this would be no more than a blip on the radar. With Boston going up against the Padres at San Diego and the Yanks taking on the Giants, look for the boys to pick up at least a game. Just take take care of your own business and keep chippin' away.
Of course I'm an optomist....I'm a fan

Abreu struck out so maybe he was trying to pull the ball. That would be good baseball. He struck out so that's just bad execution no matter what he was trying to do. And remember, without the base running gaffe they probably score a run in the inning. Posada singled when he came up.
As for the NL thing I think that's a non-factor in that situation. They were nowhere close to the pitcher's spot. They were set up for a big inning and they would have had plenty of real hitters coming up before the pitcher's spot. If anything you need to go for the big inning more because you will have that opportunity less often in the NL. That was one opportunity where they could have had a rally without the pitcher coming up in the middle of it all.

Tom McCarthy is every bit the sugar coated shill for the team that Sterling and Suzyn are, and maybe even more so. Listen to him being interviewed on the FAN and how hard it is for anyone to get him to say anything even slightly negative. Even then, its immediately couched with something postive. He is unlistenable, and not a NY announcer.
Howie Rose is very good. A little bookish for my taste but hey, thats been popular with the Mets since Tim McCarver. Not nearly as overbearing as Tim, though. But he can make you feel like you're in Baseball 3rd grade sometimes. Overall I think Howie's the best of the 4.
The people who want Sterling to be Vin Scully just don't get him. He's an entertainer, a clown, and is not to be taken seriously.

He's not Vin Scully, but a radio announcer should be able to tell the difference between a home run and a fly ball caught 5 feet short of the wall. What Sterling needs is Lasik surgery and a new announce partner.
Getting the win with Igawa pitching last night was big, but they need to finish the Giants off and take the next two this weekend, plus at least win the Baltimore series to take a little stain off of that Rockies mess.
And Francesa said it best yesterday, if Clemens can't give them a big performance in that Thursday game (avoid a sweep, keep from getting back to .500), why exactly are they paying him $1 million per start again?

Your wrong on this one bully.. Sterling was funny bad before.. He was a clown.. and Yankee fans enjoyed him.. So did Mike and Chris.. We never thought he was any good.. But now, He is just annoyingly, incompetently bad.. Its like Mike said yesterday.. He wants the Yankees to win so bad that he calls the plays how he hopes they will happen.. HE NEVER LETS THE PLAY HAPPEN BEFORE HE CALLS IT.. And sometimes (alot of times) You have no fucking idea what just happened. I mean.. I write alot now because i have a project that i am working on.. So i listen to the radio much more.. And you have no fucking clue how aggravated i get with this guy.. Its one thing to be a clown and funny.. but its a whole nother ballgame to be just plain bad. And Suzann.. Can she fucking pronounce anything?? She makes Dog sound like a motivational speaker.. The Yankee broadcasting from top to bottom, TV Radio.. Is an ABOMINATION.. I like Pauly and Lieter and Bobby Singleton.. But Kay is fucking awful.. And i blame the Yanks and Yes for that one.. They do not want any announcer saying anything bad about the team. Its like YES North Korea.. EVERYTHING IS GREAT!!!! No credible announcer will go within 10 feet of a Yankee booth.. Because they know if your anyway critical of the team.. Your done.. EXACTLY what I thought. I didn't hear Friday's show, but does anyone know if they got a hold of it yet? I mean, this wasn't just "It is high, it is far, it is CAUGHT." He actually called the homerun. He was halfway into his "Melk Man delivers" shtick before saying "Wait, what are they saying?!" as if it were ever being discussed by umpires. The ball was caught at the warning track.
