When my computer boots up, the bios first runs a memory test (takes about 3 or 4 seconds), then it detects the drives. For about a week now, there's been a problem. When I turn my comp off, I usually turn off the power strip (actually, its a back UPS). Now, if I have had the UPS turned off, the next time I try to boot up, it runs the memory test, but then stalls and doesn't detect the drives.

If I don't turn of the UPS, it boots up fine every time. I guess it's not too much of a problem. I just have to leave the UPS turned on. I'm just concerned that it's happening. What do you think it is? My first thought was the battery on the motherboard might be going bad, but I don't want to mess with that. I'm thinking it might mess up the bios, if I try to change the battery.

I am certainly no techie, but my computer does a similar thing. If I un plug it from the wall, or if the power goes out, when it re-boots it goes thru everything normally but comes back on with the date as Jan 1, 1999. I have to manually change the date then run updates on a few things.

I think the b/f said thats what the problem with mine was, deab battery in the motherboard.

It just did it even with it still plugged in. First time for that. Does anyone know if it causes any problems to change the battery (ie. will it cause my bios to lose it's settings)?

Your CMOS is definately being cleared every time you power cycle. The CMOS holds the particulars of your hardware, the time and date, boot order, and a few other things. You're already losing on a regular basis, so there's no risk of doing damage. Your BIOS will be fine. That's the part that doesn't leave when the power is off. Think of the BIOS as the software and the CMOS as the settings of that software.

I would remove the battery and take it to a computer store or radio shack. You should be able to get one on the cheap for under $10 that will last for another 3-5 years.

Good luck budday!

Thanks a lot, wallower! It looks like one of the regular quarter sized batteries that usually sell for about 4 bucks in photo departments.

def sounds like a CMOS battery, check that first, if not the mother board might be going back from a bad capicitor

Was it the battery? If not try unplugging the cd-rom or something that you dont need to boot and see if it does the same thing. You might not be getting enough power to the drives.
