Drinking by far.... You never really hear pot heads causing a fight in a bar or anywhere else... I would rather sit with a bunch of pot heads than drunks any day.

alcohol is worse.

pot is illegal for racist reasons (ie the notion from the 1920s & '30s that mexicans in the southwest, and blacks in the south will rape young white women, and commit more crimes while high). it was further perpetuated by the fact that pot grew all over the US during that time, and if pot was widely available, the thought was that it would be used by said minorities and thus destroy the country.

the benefits of marijuana, like other plants, are many, especially in the realm of diminishing pain in such places as the head, stomach, and menstrual cramps. it also helps stimulate the appetite of aids and cancer patients, not to mention eases pain caused by glucoma and arthritis.

additionally, as others have said, you don't see people getting into fist fights while smoking pot. plus, it's not physically addictive. finally, it makes you feel reeeeally nice.

which is worse? alcohol, by far.

America's first marijuana law was enacted at Jamestown Colony, Virginia in 1619. It was a law "ordering" all farmers to grow Indian hempseed.

There were several other "must grow" laws over the next 200 years (you could be jailed for not growing hemp during times of shortage in Virginia between 1763 and 1767), and during most of that time, hemp was legal tender (you could even pay your taxes with hemp -- try that today!) Hemp was such a critical crop for a number of purposes (including essential war requirements - rope, etc.) that the government went out of its way to encourage growth.
