considering its freeware it shouldnt be $20 a year.

It rips dvds and shrink them so you can burn them to DVDs.

I don't know who is trying to sell it to you but they're scamming you. It's a free program available here. It's a program that allows you to rip a movie from a double-layer DVD and recompress the video and menus or eliminate some menus, subtitles and extra audio tracks to fit it on a single-layer DVD-R. It's pretty useless if you have a double-layer DVD writer.

I like smart ripper better then dvd shrink so if you want to try smart ripper here.

http://www.mpegx.com/view.php?detail=323&rv=2

I do have aquestions for you tech guys. How do you compress a dvd down even further. When I rip a dvd to my computer the size is usually 4-6 gb's, but when I download a movie its around 700 mb. Does anyone know how or have a compressing softeware to reduce a file/movie?

It comes down to preference. I'd rather preserve the video quality and all the extras than save a few bucks per disc. I wasn't all that satisfied with the picture from the extra-compression that single-layer DVDs required.

Look into the program Staxrip. It will help you download all components you will need to compress a video file and it will let you cap how big you want the output file to be. The two best codecs out there are H.264 and DivX/XviD, but you should probably stick to XviD.

Anyway, Staxrip will lead you through all this. It's going to take at least a couple hours.

I cant believe they dont have something simple like when you wip it, it converts it to a smaller file at the same time? I think I will just keep my ripped DVD's the size they have and just back them up on a double layer burnt dvd.

It's not a lot of work once you figure it out. Configuring the settings and stuff should only take you about 15 minutes once you figure out what you are doing. Most of the time is just the computer processing the video file. And the most efficient method, multi-pass variable bit rate encoding, takes VERY long, although it ensures the best possible quality at lowest possible size.

It isn't as complicated as it sounds if you have the time to learn about it. But if all you are doing is creating backups double layer DVDs are faster and easier.

The advantage to DVD Shrink is if you want to back up the movie without the the extras.

One reason you might want to do this is if you have a child. You can make a backup and give it to them to watch, skipping all the ads and bullshit at the beginning, and so the original purchased copy doesn't get damaged.

The guide walks you through all the settings. It supports divx/xvid and h264 and you can choose between mp3 or ac3 audio.

I haven't dabbled in it too much but I am having trouble getting some discs to play on some stand alone players. I want to try to do some converting to DivX...any program suggestions?

DVD Fab allows that but it's sorta quirky but it works. I do the same thing for my son's movies.
