ATLANTA - A potentially explosive dispute in the City Too Busy to Hate is taking shape over a proposal to break Fulton County in two and split off Atlanta's predominantly white, affluent suburbs to the north from some of the metropolitan area's poorest, black neighborhoods.

Full Story

Interesting. Atlanta is a strange town, with a lot of different types of people that don't interact. The suburbs of Fulton don't really have much in common with the city itself, I've often wondered why the counties were laid out the way they are.

So I looked it up at http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/countyhistory.htm

"As a cost-saving measure during the Depression, Milton and Campbell counties consolidated with Fulton County on Jan. 1, 1932. This brought the number of Georgia counties to 159."

and

"Georgia's current constitution, which became effective in 1983, maintains an absolute limit of 159 counties."

So the "white" part of Fulton that wants to "secede" were their own entity until fairly recently.

There was talk of something similar in DC a few years ago where Ward 3, or as the locals call it "Upper Caucasia", wanted to break from the city and incorporate into Maryland since they were tired of footing the bill for the rest of the city.

I see that as rich/poor issues. There are so many different races living in these rich areas and so many races living in the poor areas that it really doesnt have to do with race. I know the majority of those rich may be be white and the majority of the poor maybe be black, but I see America more as a class society rather then a race society.

I dont know if a calssist society is better then a racist society but it seems better that we hopefully dont see color. Now if we could spread the wealth of America with the poor then we would be doing something.

This seems to be more about class and money than race. Although the headline would have you believe otherwise.

From the article:

Residents of north Fulton represent 29 percent of the county's population of 915,000 but pay 42 percent of its property taxes, according to a local taxpayers group. A split would lead to the loss of $193 million in property taxes alone for Fulton County.

I really have no problem with this. The more local, the better the services and the accountability of the Gov't officials. In theory at least, of course it depends on the county.

As far as the race stuff goes, the fact that they've been footing the bill up to now should give them quite a clear conscience. It would for me. Its been 40 years since the Civil Rights Act folks.

It could also be the best thing that could happen to the poor districts, forcing them out of their socialist giveaway mindset and into the reality the rest of us deal with daily. They'll do more to weed out the people who are defrauding the system, they'll do more to attract new business and retain the businesses they have. In short, they'll be forced to compete in the real world like the rest of us have to. Having the sugar daddy county paying the bills just allows them to avoid doing what they need to.

Sink or swim baby.

i agree that's it's all about money, not about race. it's not like they're moving further away from the poorer folks, they just don't want to pay for them.
