I've got an old comp I want to fix up. I've done this plenty of times, and I always would use Windows ME, since I've got the disc handy. Since ME doesn't update anymore, I thought I'd give Linux a try. Looking at their website, they said I should have at least Pentium III and 256K of RAM. I'm good there.

Here's the question. It has a list of various distributions that are suitable for this computer. Does anyone know which one I should choose? Any other advice would be appreciated, too. One more thing... Can I download the startup on my Windows comp, burn it to a CD, and use it to set it up on the old comp?

ubuntu is the hip linux distro right now. It's fairly user friendly and you can boot off the cd directly if you just want to try it.

And yes, you can burn the cd from your windows machine.

I agree completely; this, (Unbuntu), is the most user friendly Linux distro for the Install I know of.

You will need to go back to the cd if you want more features after the basic install; but it will get you online, etc. from first boot.

You want the i586, (sometimes called Intel, or x86), cd/dvd iso. You Don't want 64 bit, or AMD.

Most burning programs have a "burn cd from Image" selection; that's what you need to burn the iso to cdrom.

When it askd to partition; if you have old partitions delete them before the install, and then let Ubuntu decide how to set up swap, and native, partitions; this may require you to restart the installation once after deleting old partitions.

Well there's really no minimum requirements for Linux. There are distros that could run on cell phones. But yea, if you want the functionality of Windows you'll need a computer of about that size. BTW, it's 256mb of ram ;)

Update: I finally got a nice comp set up w/ Freespire 1.0. I have Ubuntu too, but I want to work with Freespire until I learn some of how Linux works.

I've been able to easily download several programs through the CNR service. That's the easy part. Here's my problem, though. I want to put Zone Alarm firewall, and AVG antivirus on it. I can't figure out how the downloads for those work. They aren't available through CNR. When I download them from their respective sites, I end up with all the components of the programs all split up. Can someone explain to an idiot, how to install these programs?

BTW... It's been fun to play with so far. Right now, I'm using it to record last friday's XM show from my nexxus. Fortunetely, Audacity was one of the programs available from CNR.

I'm not sure. I think binaries is how it downloaded. I picked the downloads for Linux, and what I got was a bunch of different program components. Like I said... I'm completely ignorant when it comes to Linux.
