Good, now he and Alexei Lalas can be incredibly overrated together. I shouldn't say that; Beckham does at least have talent, and at some point could have been counted among the best in the world. Lalas was quite simply the worst player ever to receive an international cap. Embarrassingly bad.

The thing is that Kids in America play Soccer more than any other sport. Sure These players that are coming are has beens. But They will still be productive here. Maybe the kids who play watch the sport to watch these guys. The sports grows, we become better at it because more kids actually go further with it. So it has a decent chance of working. If we are ever competitive in Int play, this sport can grow here.

This has been rumored for about 3 or so years. The thing behind it is that the Beckhams are HUGE all over the world, except for North America and they want to get more popularity over here. Probably for movies and shit. So this is a pretty big move but it was somewhat expected.

Now I can read my wifes US magazine and Star magazine and see Victoria in some famous American landmarks. In the rest of the world a 22 year old guy would have been playing soccer professionally in fhe top leagues for at least 4 years at this point in some cases if a player is good enough he will play in the first team at 16. A soccer player has a short career most retire in their early 30s, The American kids, because of the college system have missed out on almost a third it by the time they graduate. They are so far behind other players their same age it is almost inpossible to catch up.

wow can you say stupid, bad business? How can any athlete get paid $50 million a year? Everyone talks shit about Arod making $25 a year. But atleast thats for an american sport that makes billions a year and has the following to support it. Soccer is a non issue in America. I know someAmericans are stupid and will be buy into what is sold to them and may find Beckham attractive or worth talking about. But at the end of the day its soccer. Its too slow, no scoring, its hockey without the ice and pads. Has anyone noticed hockey has gone froma top4 sport to a niche sport in America?

IMO no matter what this guy does it will not make mls popular. He should sell $10 million worth of shirts. 400,000 shirts at $40 a pop comes to $8million. He has a proven track record when it comes to this kind of thing. He will pay for his salary through merchandising without a doubt.

Nope. Until now I couldn't name a player in mls.Guess he is earning his $$$ already.
Exactly. Now the MLS has created interest in their league domestically & internationally. How many casual domestic sports fans (and with Beckham---soccer moms) are gonna watch & attend the games now (at least once)? This opens up for a greater TV contract, greater merchandising, et al.

Now that the rules have changed they can start to pay their players...domestic kids might start to choose soccer over baseball/football/basketball. How many kids will be wearing a Beckham jersey in the next 12 months?

The MLS has also opened themselves to other big international names coming to the states. Edgar Davids, the brilliant Dutch midfielder is already coming to Dallas this season.

With higher talent comes a more exciting & more high scoring game. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but this easily "the move" that will at least put American soccer on the radar. And as blasphemous as this sounds....David Beckham could be the Babe Ruth of American Soccer.

People will now be buying LA Galaxy merchandise and buy into the Brand Beckham thing.
That is true, but Real Madrid is also the biggest soccer team in the world. People care about Real Madrid, as opposed to the LA Galaxy which no one cares about.

Beckham isn't a completely terrible player, but Real Madrid has begun the process of shipping out washed-up expensive vets like Beckham and Ronaldo (who is also being sent off) and cultivating young south-american talent like Gago, Higuain, Marcelo, and Robinho. Beckham also simply wasn't good enough to start on Madrid anymore. For any big European club, he could be a valuable piece off the bench, but as a starter he simply isn't that good.

Perhaps the saddest part of this whole thing is that Becks was dieing for Madrid to extend him, but instead they cut him loose. There was talk he had the option to go to Inter Milan which is the best club in Italy as well as one of the world's best, however, he would have been relegated to bench duty. Instead, he apparantly decided to make himself a nice chunk of change and extend his fame here in America. Personally, I don't see it. In his last contract with Madrid, Beckham's image rights belonged to the club. In order to allow him to stay, Madrid wanted to retain those rights. Essentially, they would have continued to make a fortune off his pretty face while he rotted away on the bench. Beckham refused because he knew good and well how much money was involved in those rights. He did, however, want very badly to stay with Madrid and he made that quite clear to whoever would listen. He had a new home in Spain, he enrolled his kids in a Spanish school, and he basically set up his entire life there.

Look, this was a great thing for MLS. Soccer is the most played sport by young kids up to a certain age. But they stop playing b/c they dont have anyone to idolize. For example, a kid who has played baseball his whole life has people to look up or who he wants to be like, for instance, David Wright or Derek Jeter. Soccer doesnt have that player. But now it does, so more young kids will probabaly want to pursue soccer as a career. Also, other known players will follow like Rinaldo, who will be playing in NY(those are the rumors). I mean, during the world cup, ratings here in the US were good, so it can be possible, and this is def a step in the right direction. It would def also help if Team USA goes far in tournaments. People complain thats its slow. But in the Premiership, the game is fast paced and the scoring is pretty good. So, the more and better talent the MLS gets, the better and scoring will rise, as will interest. Look at hockey. people hating the low scoring, but last 2 yrs, scoring has been up since changing rules.

But if the league actually picks up guys that i can actually feel comfortable watching without gagging then i would certainly turn me on some MLS. And if the Red Bulls get someone cool then id start attending games even. heavens to murgatroid?

I think this is a good sign for MLS that this thread is still on the first page. I'll spend 20 bucks to go see Beckham, why the hell not? The problem with soccer in this country is that our version of it sucks. It's about as much fun as watching the devils use the neutral zone trap. European soccer can be much more fast paced and have a more artistic quality to it than the crap over here. So hey, if MLS is trying to improve their product or even their revenue more power to them.

he means you're rooting for basically 3 of the top 4 or 5 british teams year to year. like saying i'm torn between the yankees, red sox and braves (before this year, anyway). myself, i've been a fan of coventry city since the mid 90s, so i know suffering.

ok, when i started likeing soccer, the only player i knew outside of beckham was Wayne Rooney. SO, i started playing alot of Fifa games then watchin any games i could on tv. but like i said, Rooney was the only other guy i knew. i dunno wat to tell ya man. not like im a band wagoner or a front runner. im a die hard for all my teams in sports. but in soccer, i havent found MY team. but the more i watch, the more certain players become favs. Steven Gerard became a fav of mine in the World cup, as did Frank Lampard.

The reason i would pick him over Ronadinhio is age. Rooney is 21 and will only get better( he is great now) and Ronaldinhio is 27 28... he only has a few years left at his level. As far as my other players. I like Terry, Ronaldo (Man U) Not the fat ass Real Madrid Ronaldo. Giggs, Buffoon, Chech, A few others.
