Man, I sure wish I knew how to fix this. For every solution that anyone comes up with, there's at least one decent counter-reason that it won't work. I fear that the answer lies with the Iraqi people, and I just don't think they're going to get their act together anytime soon, if at all. I just wish we could get the hell out of there.

Rooster, I was also hoping for something in the tens of thousands. However, we need to get to the root cause of these attacks which is the lack of Sunni Arab influence in government. As long as that underrepresentation exists, Sunni death squads will attack and Shia death squads will return the favor. We need a Hashemite monarch to compensate for the assured Shia majority in parliament, because at this point, its safe to say that the Lebanese model has failed the Iraqis for the past 4 years.

Man, I was getting ready to rant on the pundits and politicians talking about how to win the war, and John Edwards (did I get that name right?) just summed it up perfectly: "We don't know what will happen in Iraq". Exactly! Both sides can talk about how they think we can win the war, but the truth is, nobody has "the answer". We have never been in a fight like this. We are not fighting another country, we're fighting an organization that is widespread and could care less about what country they're in, so long as they're killing Americans. The whole "blow 'em all up" theory just doesn't work. As much as it sounds like a good strategy, it is just flat out wrong to kill innocent people over this. That's why we started this whole thing, because innocent people were killed in our country, and we won't stand for it. Having said all of that, as I said earlier, I don't know what the answer is. It's just a lot more complicated than the usual warfighting method of taking out a government. We did that, and things got worse afterwards. I'm going to stop now, before I lose track and start contradicting myself.

BTW: I will add one thing. The reasons people join/stay in the military are varied. Being forced is NOT one of them. Yes, we had stop-losses, which sucked, but they didn't force anybody to re-uponce they were over. Believe me, I'm retirement eligible, and could have very easily retired last summer. I have numerous reasons for staying in, some personal, some based on a need to help out and do something.

And that's the end of my rant, DONK!

I listened to the speech on radio and now just watched it on tape. although I have made my disdain for the President known in at least half my posts here, I honestly wished that he would use the opportunity to show he had finally woken up, understood the mess we're in and either had some good ideas or had asked for real cooperation in finding some. Sadly, I heard then saw a guy who has only realized that he is in over his head (some progress but too little) but is still sinking and doesn't know where the the bottom is.

A few brief points tonight and then I'll work on a Yerdaddy like post for tomorrow.

I think the fundamental problem in Iraq is not terrorists/jihadists/insurgents but that there are WAT too few Iraqis who are willing to defend their COUNTRY, as opposed to their tribe, religious sect, militia, etc. They don't have people like Rooster or Hafast (and the other military peeps in our family) in their military or guys like Chris in their police force. They have the equivalent of Bloods and Crips who join their services to push the influence of their groups not to defend the whole.

Bush's "solution" seems to be that once we kill the jihadists Iraq is all set. He is purposefully ignoring what looks to the world like the start of a war between Sunni and Shiite militias. i don't see how you kill the "bad guys" in a situation as messy as this, but I'll defer to the professional military here.

The threats against Syria and Iran seem tinny and hollow since we can't handle what's already on our plate.

Fundamently, I can't identify anybody in the Iraqi government who really wants what W articulated what we want for Iraq (rule of law, etc.). Captain Rooster wrote:
ChrisTheCop wrote:
Rooster, I think its a good idea; more troops, with a plan....what do u think?
I think Iraq draws many of the extremists. We set the stage for the fight, they come. If we just leave the fight there ... they follow us here--SAD BUT TRUE! All they need is free reign to plan and get set.

Just want to second what Rooster said here. They're going to follow us home eventually. Just like they followed us home from Afghanistan 10 years after we left. Probably won't take that long this time but who knows? We thought it was a good idea to encourage and arm and finance Islamic extremism and point it at the Russians, then we left everything in place and split. Bin Laden picked up what we left behind and turned it on us. Here are the similarities to Iraq:

During the war extremists got hands-on training in fighting insurgent and terrorist campaigns against a larger more organized enemy. It was also, in the minds of the extremists and ordinary Muslims, (and us, in fact), a defeat my Islamist fighters against a superpower. That's a show of strength - somthing that weakness is always attracted to. Young, angry or miserable Muslims who were looking for something to identify with will seek to join al-Qaeda or one of its offshoots after we start withdrawing forces. That's the point in which you'll see al-Qaeda propagandizing that they've won and are driving us from Iraq. And it will be effective.

As a miserably failed state Afghanistan was an excellent place to train and operate terrorists. Iraq will be the same only bigger and better and closer to more important strategic locations. Which is why we'll be back - or our soldiers will be back.

Terrorism as it really exists rather than the political speech version we all know so well, wins a victory as we lose Iraq. Simple as that.

The troop surge in Al Anbar will be mostly Marines. In and around Baghdad will be Army units. They have 2 regiments in Anbar presently. 5000 Troops will go to Anbar which will be about 2 regiments.
