I tried to post this in the unamed tech/geek forum but it doesnt work.

How can you tell what kind of ram you need for your laptop? I want to add more ram but dont know if I need a specific kind. Does it matter if you have celron or pent 4 or duo? Or can you just buy any ram and it will work with all processors?

Were is a good place to buy ram and have it installed? I know best buy and comp usa will do this. Any idea of which is better and who has better pricing? Any help will be great.

crucial.com is a fairly easy way to find out what RAM you need, especially if you have a name brand machine. Your machine's manual (if you have it), or the manufacturer's web site should also be able to tell you. As far as how much, it just depends on what you use the machine for. If just email, web surfing, and the occasional document, 500MB should be fine. If you're doing photo/video editing, big number crunches, gaming, you should probably have at least 1GB. Yes, there are many places that will install it, usually for free if you buy the RAM at their shop, but if you go the online route, it's fairly simple to install yourself. It's a laptop, right (I already forgot from your post)? Check your manual, it should show you where to take off the panel to access the RAM, just a matter of plugging in the new stuff, just make sure you line up the notches. Don't try to force it in, if it's not going in easily, you probably have it in backwards.

If you're going to take it to a place to do it, just let them figure out what RAM you have.

If you want to do it yourself which I recommend, Google something called PC Wizard, download the latest free version and run it. This will tell you what kind of RAM you have, for example, DDR 2700 or whatever.

Look at the bottom of your laptop. If you see a place to open with a RAM icon on it or something like that, you're gonna be able to snap a new stick in real easy and save yourself 50-100 bucks in install.

Try to do it yourself man, save cash.

sounds very helpful thanks guys. I just looked on the bottom of my laptop it has 3 little bay like doors. all 3 have phillips screws holding them in, but none say which is for ram and what kind to use. Should i just unscrew them all? Should I look for something?

Just check your manual and take the dive. I recommend a tool called CPU-Z to determine what kind of RAM you have. Here are some sample screens I made for another thread about this...

CPU-Z

Go to 18004memory.com

There is a button to check your computer. It will tell you exactly what type of memory you have, how many slots are used and available, and give you a listing of available sizes for purchase.
