View Full Version : Which is Better? XM show or the FM show

If there is already a thread on this, accept my humblest of apologies, I missed it. Having R&F on for 6 hours now is like eating a 32 ounce steak for lunch and salmon/crab cakes for dinner, every day. Having listened to both, the XM show is better. It's almost like they keep the curtain pulled back for three hours on XM, and let it fly, whereas on the FM, they understandably behave like they are having the school principal over to the house for tea. Enjoyable, just well mannered, less personal and less relaxed. The biggest difference isn't the comedy level, but that the night show lacks the sharp edge of the day show. This isn't so bad at times...It makes a more pleasant experience. An unexpected, interesting dynamic has surprisingly evolved: The night show on free FM has given enormous contrast to the day show. As a result, we witness the boys behaving themselves, "in public", on the FM night show, and then, we see them as they really are, "at home", behind closed doors, in their underwear, on the XM show. If there was one thing that should be changed, it's switching time slots with both shows. Have them do the "proper" show during the day, and let the shit hit the fan on the night show. Either way, it's just fucking great to have 3 hours of bonus time. Which is better to you?

I was going to post a thread like this, except I was going to wait until the FM show had been on at least a month. I like both a lot, but they are very different. I don't think we know the true character of the FM show yet, because there are only 11 shows in the can. We don't know whether there will be more staff drama featured on the FreeFM show like there was on the old WNEW show. Therefore, I reserve judgment until we can all get a better feel for the FM show.

I like both, but the XM show is easier for me to listen to. So I say the XM show is better, because the entire world should revolve around me and the FM show fails to do that.

I think both are great, but they are very different. Ronnie's freedom to be dirtier on the XM show makes for some classic lines/bits/situations. But Fez seems to be more lively during the FM show, so that's a big plus. And I'm sure the FM show will continue to grow & find an identity, so I will continue to enjoy the shit out of both of them. Call me Sweeden, I'm fence-sitting...can't choose.

No offense, but I think the Swiss were/are the fence sitters. The Swedes actually fought, and now that we are talking Sweden, Inger Stevens had big tits. "Ya Meester Morley". Who gets that reference?

I agree with Mikey. It's too early to tell. The boys are still getting used to being back on terrestrial radio (as Ron pretty much said when talking about Earl keeping him updated on dumps), and so they need to do that, and work out the kinks, etc. of the FM show. Once they have all that down, then we can make a judgement.

I agree with Mikey, I haven't heard enough of the new night show to make a judgement yet. They definitely are different shows, though they need some time to develop it into the feel they want to give it. I'm certain they're after the idea of having the NEW type shows, though that'll take time and as more and more listeners and callers make their way to the show that it'll happen.

I really do hope they ultimately get their own channel on XM and a way to hear both shows on XM.

I dont know why, but to me it sounds as if the boys sound happier on the FM night show. Ronnie certainly doesnt need to curse to be funny and as someone else said, Fezzy seems to have much more pep in his step on FM.

The steak at lunch and crab cakes dinner is a great analogy, the more of the BUDDAY'S the BETTTER!
In the world revolves around me category.... I love them both, but since I listen to the XM at work I'd like the clean version from 12-3 and the uncensored at night.

as more and more listeners and callers make their way to the show that it'll happen.
I really do hope they ultimately get their own channel on XM and a way to hear both shows on XM.

That would be great, but don't hold your breath for them getting their own channel. As far as syndication, why not? Come back to JFK, now. There is no better show on the radio than these guys. As far as giving them a chance to evolve into their new show at night: I think what you hear is it. For me, it took me right back to the WJFK, post Janet Jackson era. The XM show really showcases these guys, and it's probably unfair to choose between the two, now or in 6 months, as there are different rules that apply. I'll give you an example: last night, on free FM,people were calling in on spouse abuse. As a cop before I retired, I had my share of these calls, and was about to offer my brilliant insights by telling about the time a woman was beating the hell out of her husband in a trailer, "up county". We responded and pulled her off of the poor schmuck, only to observe this charming lady jump up on the couch, pull down her underpants, and piss in front of us, all over the couch. Very Audrey Hepburnesque. Now on the air, I would have said "went to the bathroom" as advised, but then they just dropped me, hung up on me. When I called back, thinking it was a phone malfucntion, the call screener said it was too dirty for radio. I could accept the fact that my story wasn't up to their comedy standards or irrelevant, but "too dirty"? This is what it is, and okay, so it's a little vanilla. Just don't expect the same night shows as before, now or in 6 months. Despite this, the FM show is still very entertaining.

i hear both shows and like them both, they are very different. it is too early to tell but right now, it is the XM by a long shot. only because, i hate commerical radio and love XM's free form.

Although it is early, one thing about the FM show that I'm not liking is how R&F need to dance around certain topics. Yes, the boys don't need to curse to be funny, but they do need to be able to discuss certain things. They can do that without cursing, but in the current state of FM, they are barely able to discuss the event. It's one thing to not say "I'd fucked her in the ass," but be able to use some other safe words to describe it, but with current FM, they can't do that.

Again, maybe this is something that they'll be able to handle easily once they get used to FM radio again, so we'll see.

Because there aren't a lot of commercial buys on the Free show, it doesn't get as interrupted as much as the WNEW or the WJFK show.

ESD is a LOT more in-check on Free-FM than he is on XM. I'm sure this is part of the process of easing the New York audience in.

The Free show gets the caller advantage. Mikey said we're only 11 shows in, but the audience already gets the show.

I wouldn't mind if all the board gossip/show drama/staff drama/etc. is focused on the XM show, and the Free show retains it's local, NY flavor.

Seemed to come across as "speaking from experience" too. At least it is available online, and we can all hold out hope for it to be on XM at some point.

Personally, I don't think you have to tailor a show for other markets if you syndicate out - I like it when they are true to their place where they are physically, etc. It never hurt my feelings that they never talked about the Redskins or the Metro when they were based out of NY and on JFK, but it's not like they haven't been to that movie before and knew how it ended, so they know what's best for them.

(To be a bit of a WJFK apologist, again, I had a bout of insomnia this week and clicked a file that had some segments from 2 years ago, and was just impressed how funny they were, how consistant Ron and Fez remain, and how good the callers actually were - not overly funny, but very good - and diverse - maybe it wasn't the norm, and maybe Jan 2005 really was their peak in DC, but a good clip got going, and both Ron and Fez were engaged with them - Giant Brian was there, and so was Dubs still - and all of that was even after they got bounced an hour for Maryland Football talk - which they trashed openly - nice little surprise considering how shit upon that time has been).

Anyway - back on topic - too soon to pick a favorite of the XM or FreeFM shows - 1/4 of a day spent with R&F is something that needs to be savored and enjoyed - like steak and crab cakes!
