Are there states that don't have these? I don't mean lights in the median, like this one. I mean the left turn arrow that lets you turn, while oncoming traffic is stopped. I live in Virginia, and I constantly get stuck behind out of state people who won't turn. Tonight, it was someone from Florida, but I've seen it with other states, too.

I'm not talking about idiots who just aren't paying attention. I can see that they are confused. They move up a little... then stop. I can see them asking the passenger what to do. Do any of you live in a state that doesn't have this?

We have them in NJ and I never had an issue with one. What I have had problems with is people (usually old farts) who don't realize that they have to pull all the way up to the light or they won't trip the ground sensor that makes the light/arrow change.

Another thing we have ALOT of in NJ is Jug-Handles. I don't think that they are as common in other states, at least from the people I've spoken to. They can't grasp the concept that in order to make a left turn you need to be in the right lane.

On two occassions I've almost slammed into the back of out of state cars who decided to come to a full stop in the left lane of a divided highway because they wanted to make a left turn. When I honk my horn they flip me off (just like the old farts in my sensor example) and think that I'm the crazy guy.

On a side note, I find traffic circles a little daunting. The first time I saw one was when I went to Cape Cod. They were pretty small, but nothing prepared me for the ones in Ireland. I'm trying to pay attention to what road to go on while shifting with my left hand. Yeah, I traveled some traffic circles more than one time.

There are two types of sensors. The older kind is a metal strip at the intersection. It magnetically detects when a car is there. Motorcycles often don't have enough metal mass to trigger it, so they sell a magnet you can mount under a motorcycle to trip it.

The second kind is what looks like a camera mounted above the traffic light (actually, it is a sort of camera). In the daytime, it sees when a car is in the lane. At night, it is tripped by your headlights. You can actually get it to think a car is there by shinning a flashlight on it. I've done it many times, when they are sometimes angled wrong, and can't see my lights.

BTW... What the Hell is a "jug handle"?
