Didn't Willie do a gay cowboy song recently after the Brokeback Mountain movie? "Cowboys are frequently fond of each other" or something like that? Willie had a song on Brokeback Mountain soundtrack "he was a friend of mine" (I think). I think Willie smoked his hair in with that pot!

Flatt and Scruggs and Little Jimmy Dickens too!

There's a lot of good country today. Robert Earl Keene, Pat Green, Charlie Robison, etc.

Patsy Cline was great, she doesn't get enough props. Loretta Lynn was/is awful. Coalminer's Daughter could be the worst song ever.

I am not much into country, but I do like the classics like Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and Cash. Of the newer stuff, I like that guy that did that XXL song (forgot his name).

ps- sorry about the double posting above. I froze up on my end and didn't know if it got thru.

Yeah, that might be harsh. She's a good singer, I just can't get past that one song.

Has Buck Owens been mentioned? Streets of Bakersfield is one of my all time favorites.

I think Willie is a genius and Waylon has recorded some strong stuff, but my favorite country singer has always been George Jones - strange he hasn't been mentioned yet.

Willie does stuff that would get anyone else banned from country radio stations - the brokeback mountain song, getting arrested with weed, the "Bush ain't no Texan" comment. But they don't dare mess with him. That's why I respect him.

I'm not that much of a country fan, but I do like how Coe hates Nashville with a passion. I mean, the Nashville music machine is surely of the devil.

Here's why most country sucks...they don't write their own songs so there is no real feeling or emotion behind them...even though the song is probably about someone dying (every country song today is). Country singers are targeting the dumbest people in America with their songs because only stupid people can listen to a song about a girl who's father killed her (Alissa lies) and think it's a great song because it's so emotional...no it's not! It's a songwriter making up the sadest story he can think of because he knows a million hayseeds will buy into it. That's why Pat Green, R.E.K, and Charlie Robison are ok, they are singing about their experiences. By the way, has anyone heard Jack Ingram's remake of "lips of an angel?" Yikes! Brutal!

Of the relatively newer country acts I gotta go with Dwight Yoakum. Started out opening for punk bands in LA doing what was called at the time...Cowpunk. But he sticks pretty much to what I call country...for the most part. And he's great in most movies as well. Awesome in SLINGBLADE. Haggard and Cash are my two favorites all time.

And by the way....Went to a Dwight Yoakum concert and it was the only time I ever felt in danger at a show. Country fans mixed with rockers. Pretty volatile mix.

My favorite is George Jones.

Not because of his music, but because one night his wife, frustrated he was so drunk, threw out all the beer and hid his car keys. He lived about 8 miles from the nearest town, so just jumped on the lawn mower, and at the leisurley rate at about 5 mph, he drove to town. On the way, it is alleged that a car full of kids slowed down to make fun of him and he said "Fuck you kids! You wish you had a Corvette like this!!" The cops pulled him over shortly thereafter.

He pulled another lawn mower stunt while married to Tammy Wynette, but this time he made it to a bar - 10 miles away! I suspect that lawn mower went a little faster.

Great forum! Cause' it belongs in old school. I hate "new" country. Willie, Waylon, Coe, Cash, Haggard, Robbins; some of my favorite pickers are Flatt & Scruggs, Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant, and Jimmy Reed (who I think is underrated).
My new favorite country band are the Drive-By Truckers.
