With the reaction to "Mas Que Nada" in the listening threads, it made me wonder if there are any other fans of Brazilian music out there like me.

Here's an artist who is really hitting her stride, and put out two great albums this year.

Marisa Monte

I'm always looking for new acts, and find I like most of what I hear from Brazilian artists, regardless of genre. So if you have any, post them.

Yes, huge fan of Brazilian music since my wife is from Brazil. Have you listened to Bebel Gilberto? I think she only has 2 albums but they are both fantastic. Check 'em out.

The only Brazilian performers I know are Bebel Gilberto & Sepultura and that blonde woman who has (used to now maybe?) host a kids show.

I saw Soulfly open for Rammstein about 8 years ago, but they weren't very good, so I think you're going for more of a Mambo Kings vibe.

Tom Ze is a god, as far as I'm concerned. I dig most of that Tropicalia scene: Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, Gal Costa, etc.

Check 'em out. Astrud's daughter, doing updated Bossa Nova. She's one of the most famous exports in recent years. Her last CD was heavily promoted around NYC. If you like her, check out Lisa Ono, specifically this CD. A JAPANESE girl (from Sao Paolo, parents moved there) who has a very sexy, sweet deep voice. Sings in Portugese. Does alot of Jobim covers, most really well. Her other stuff (Hawaiian-themed/US pop/other) didn't work for me. But the 60's Bossa Nova classics she does really well.

Isn't the president of Brazil a famous recording artist? I guess I could go look this up, but first why don't I post a pointless pondering of mine?

From Gringo Guides

When most people think of travel in Brazil they imagine hundreds of beautiful samba dancers in dental floss bikinis shaking their stuff on the beach. The trouble with dispelling such erotic fantasies as these is that the image of loose sexuality in Brazil is fairly true.
For the average Brazilian to go out and kiss someone in a bar is no big deal at all. Most of them will sleep with someone and refer to as a coisinha, a 'little thing'. The body rules supreme in Brazil and they are very at ease in their sexuality. In times of Carnival, especially, no one is supposed to belong to anyone else and sex is just part of having a good time.

Even when you meet girls expect them to forget you as fast as they met you. No one really believes in tomorrow in Brazil. If you do manage to get a girlfriend for real, expect her to be utterly possessive and jealous. They learn their melodramatic love politics from watching the interminable telenovelas on TV where the main stars are always freaking out on each other.

That is so true about Brazilian women. I've dated a few and they were more unreliable than drug dealers. So you think they're blowing you off, then you see them again and its like nothing happened.

Brazilians often refer to Brazil as "The Land of Tomorrow" which is ironic, since they dont believe in tomorrow.

I cant get enough of Gilberto Gil and Rosa Passos lately.

Anyone who can listen to "Chiclete Con Banana (http://www.amazon.com/Brazilian-Collection-Gilberto-Gil/dp/B0000060FU/ref=sr_1_46?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1199153358&sr=1-46)" and not shake their booty must be dead.

Rosa has such a sweet soft sultry voice and she plays an amazing guitar at the same time. What an amazing talent. She's like Joyce but sexier.

Lisa Ono

Born in Sao Paolo from Japanese parents. Smooth, soft, sultry voice among the best on the Bossa scene. I've been a fan of hers for a long time, but lately I've been listening to alot of her music. She's best known for Bossa classics like samba de verão, chega de saudade, ela e carioca, etc. She's done albums in Portugese, Italian, French and she recently did a 3 volume set of spanish love songs called Romance Latino. Her 'Besame Mucho' is the best rendition I've ever heard of the song, by far. It's on I-Tunes.

Tom Ze does veer into some more traditonal areas. His albums can vary quite drastically from one to the next. Astrud Gilberto is a definite winner if you like a breezy, lightly jazzy, swingin 60's Bossa Nova sound. She also worked with Organist Walter Wanderly who has some truly classic albums. In fact, when Ron does his Pees Hode bit, the hold music he is humming is almost certainly Walter Wanderly's version of Joao Gilberto's "One Note Samba." Needless to say, Joao Gilberto is definitely someone else to check out. The Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto albums are true Brazillian Jazz classics.

Get a Brazillian wax while listening to highten the experience.

Hold on: don't forget Maria Bethania and Milton Nascimento (the earlier the better). Now you may resume burying your nose in that mountain of coke.

Everything just sounds better in Portugese for some reason.
