Iknow there are alot of you on this board who like the fantasy genre.  If you do, check out the series "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin.  I just finished the third book in the series and goddamn they are amazing.  So fucking brutal and complex.  You have to read this shit.

<p>Song of Ice and Fire is definitely not for young adults.&nbsp; It's has sex, incest, violence, and they're not afraid to kill off sympathetic characters.&nbsp; the first book is called &quot;A Game of Thrones&quot;</p>

Winter is coming, muthafuckers!!!!!!

HBO is making a series out of the first book in the series "A Game of Thrones."

http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/11/hbo-orders-fant.html (older link)

the novels are some of the best fantasy that has ever been written. For those of you that have not read them, buy the books today.

I am looking forward to what HBO does with them. I heard that the dwarf guy from "the station Agent" will be playing Tyrion Lannister (one of the main characters). I also heard some rumors about Sean Bean as Eddard Stark and Gillian Anderson as Catelyn Stark.

I am ready to cum my pants, i am so excited

This rules!
And regarding the article and fantasy on primetime TV, I can't believe the article failed to mention The Legend of the Seeker which I am enjoying thoroughly.

any guesses/ wishes on who to play Cersei and Jaime? I can see Orlando Bloom as Jaime. He is about the right age, is pretty, and has already done alot of sword choreography.

Yeah, these books are almost "anti-fantasy" in a way: I'd say they're more like historical fiction. There's a bit of magic, but not very much at all; there's dragons, but they're basically just big dumb killing machines, not the wise protectors they can be in other fantasy books. And, as noted above, characters aren't guaranteed to survive, and often die at odd moments.

These might actually be books you'd like better if you don't generally like fantasy, because Martin is so brutally and viciously taking down a lot of the conventions of the genre.

I actually hope they go with no-name actors, so it won't be hard for me to suspend my belief. I love Orlando Bloom, but I fear I would just keep thinking to myself "Hey, there goes Legolas/Will Turner".

John Snow for Mod!

I am in no way a fan of fantasy novels, but I was hooked on this series from book one. Fantastic writing with compelling story lines. I've been checkin Martin's website for the last 2 years waiting for word on the next installment. He better get on it!

As for the HBO thing it is My understanding is that each season will span one volume, which is great bc there is so much to cover. Glad HBO is doing it bc they alone can bring this series to life properly.

Littlefinger for Admin!!!

I wonder how they are going to do the seperate plots. Dany's plotline is so different from the stark/lannister plot, the settings have almost nothing to do with each other.

Also, if "a dance with dragons' doesn't come out soon, i am gonna kill someone. i have been waiting fucking years for this book.

Martin's responded to some of the more outlandish casting rumors for this show (Patrick Stewart as Tywin Lannister?) by reminding people this show just isn't going to have the budget to load the cast down with as many stars as people think.

Well, Peter Dinklage is still signed on to play Tyrion. Which is good cause there arent many midget actors with talent out there

I started rereading AFFC in anticipation of Dragons finally coming out. I have no idea if its any closer than it was two years ago, but my fingers are crossed. Fuckin Martin.

I've been waiting five years for this son of a bitch to come out...yet somehow it hits the market TWO WEEKS AGO, and I was completely oblivious. :furious:

One of the positives of reading the series on a delay is that I was just finishing the fourth book when the fifth one came out and I'm loving it.
