This one is a little more tricky than that. Everybody knew about the scandal, and yet reelected him with a 57% margin. So this prosecutor is effectively overturning the results of the election. The fact that he's stepping down now means Pataki will appoint his successor. Who will likely be a Republican. Thats very iffy stuff in my book. If it was the other way around I'd be screaming about it, so I cant support it here.

I really didn't think the scandal was such a big deal. But apparently he did the exact same thing as NYC Comptroller, so he really has no excuse this time around.

I hope Pataki will consult with Spitzer and find a replacement they can BOTH agree upon. Though it should be a Republican, since the nature of the job is to be something of a watchdog (but mostly its about investing the states pension funds). And you wouldn't want someone too close to whoever is Governor.

I'm so confused by this whole thing. Just a few weeks ago they said the total he will pay back is $200k. Why now is this still going on and why is he pleading guilty? I thought all the court shit was done with and they told him total to pay back and that was it? How did it get to the point were he was still being investigated and still going to court? Something seems fishy, like they had something else on him and they blackmailed him to pleed guilty or have the other shit released.

As for Pataki appointing a new comptroller, I dont think thats true. They said he promised not to take office in the new year that also when the new Gov takes over so wouldnt the new Gov place who he wants?

Or maybe there was zero chance of him not being found guilty when it went to trial so he took the best deal he could get.

And bravo to those geniuses knowing about this and still voting for him.
