After hearing the show yesterday it seems that Billy Staples is Ron's man and because of that I think we should start an outreach program to help support him during his troubled times.

The show yesterday opened our eyes to how much respect Ron had for Billy and gave us an inside look as to how much better he was at everything in life compared to the crew working for the show now. He made amazing bits for the show, created songs and gave us laughter. He also worked closely with Ron and had some serious conversations with him, putting him a step above your average producer.

It's time we repay him for everything that he has done for us and for the show.

It's time to reach out to Billy and say thanks.

If we can get enough people together we can help Billy in the new year, get a convoy together, bring him some "staples" of good will, and get his 2007 off to a good start.

So who's with me? Lets show people what this board is all about and help out a brother in need.

I don't think he needed to be "Ron's man" to deserve this thread. Billy was a funny SOB on the show and was very approachable, so much that he even embarrassed himself with a few of us r/f.netters on the golf course. So needless to say, I'm in. We should also reach out to our man Elfish as well. I was rocked by the fact that he not only continues to have health issues, but his mental state was so severe. This shit just goes beyond radio and into human issues. I think Ron and Fez are genuinely concerned with Elfish too. Yet they still managed to have some fun with Billy, but at least he's not on the edge here. Billy's just out there and was clearly too absorbed with jealousy for Earl. Billy rocks and should be above that.

i have been talking to billy via PM and email for months. after the wedding he was the first person to wish me well. on a semi daily basis he writes to me telling me to go after my dreams. BILLY IF YOU NEED ANYTHING, get in touch with me.

Billy is one of the most genuine people and warmest souls I've ever met on this planet. He's the kind of guy you instantly like and root for.

Aside from all the laughs he provided all of us on a nightly basis back in the WNEW days, he was also a loyal team member of the Ron and Fez show and there was practically nothing he wouldn't do for the boys or the fans.

I hope Mr. Staples gets through his latest trials and tribulations and returns to the fold in one way or another.

The couple of times I met Billy, he was nothing but kind and inviting. Some of the best radio ever involved Billy.

I'm always up for a Sweaty News Update.

i pitched to Billy one time... no homo

seriously - we played in a couple softball games together but on opposite sides. i've seen him line one off IrishAlkeys balls(still makes me laugh being IA didn't get too hurt) and one time he reached and foul tipped one of my pitches so i said 'even though it was his first strike' " wow stayed alive on that one" and he had to think for a second and replies " hey that's only one strike " and then i just laughed.

not a whole lot but i considered it to be alot of fun, like the guy a bunch, and wish him the best!

I love Billy Staples. I first heard him on Opie and Anthony when he and Paul Bond would go on the air. He was known as 'Fat Guy' then, and I'm surprised no one mentions that stunt he and Bond pulled alongside Jay Mohr that made the news. That was great radio, some of the best from the WNEW days.

I hope he recovers as best he can and it pains me to know he's in such trouble.

The same goes to Elfish, though I don't know much about him beyond the Welcher's bet and Memphis.

Billy has always been a gentleman when I have spoken to him and still remains that way. with all he has been going through publicly he has retained that funny outlook on life and things. He will make a nice comeback I feel

I talk to Billy through Aim once in a while and he is always the nicest guy. I am def in. If he ever needs anything, im there. It really broke my heart to hear him like that Last night. I wish RF would throw him a bone and bring him back just to lift his spirits. He is a very good guy.

Billy has been offered help many times. Ron personally took him to meetings and a number of board members offered "anything you need, Billy". At some point Billy has to take responsibility.

I'm willing to pick him up drive him to a meeting and take him home. But Billy is going to have to get out of his basement himself.

I love Billy (no homo) but all any of us can do is send him our prayers and hope he gets it.

If someone comes up with a better idea I'm in. Billy is a very important part of the Ronfez Family and I sincerely hope he comes around before its too late...

I agree with the sentiments expressed here about Billy being a good guy and what he brought to the show by playing the loveable ne'er-do-well, but I'm afraid Unknown PD probably has it right. You can't help somebody with Billy's demons until they ask for that help, for real. And most never do. I'm not a 12-stepper myself, but I've seen (as we all have) family and friends struggle with chemical addictions and, unfortunately, mostly lose.

I'm willing to kick in financially to help Billy as well but I don't want to become an unwitting enabler either. Most here will probably remember when Elfish (aka David Lee Kinison) was homeless for the first (?) time and some of the DC crew organized a cash call to help him out. As we found out later during an on-air call all we really bought him was a motel room for a night and more and better vodka.

I suspect Ron, who knows a lot more about these problems than I do, will give us the sigal when it's time to help Billy with more than buying his CD.

I've trade a few emails with the budday. I can't remember what they were about, but I remember being glad to read what he had to say. I'm always here for him or just about anyone else. He's good people.

So does anyone have any ideas as to what we should do?

Looks like there are a lot of people out there who want to help. The camp out thing looks to be the only idea so far, maybe we can take that idea and tweak it a bit. Maybe someone can organize this into an official board event and we can hold a wintertime bbq at his house in his honor where all proceeds go to the Billy Staples Helping Hand Foundation and then we can track to see if he actually did anything good with the money, or donate it to his mom so she can have a little extra support in helping out her son. Everyone could show up on a Saturday, donate some money for beer and burgers, and the excess cash can go to the family. We'll all be outside so we will be cold and that could be our way of honoring the pain that he's in.

Can Ron and Fez actual get involved? They would provide the rallying cry this needs and get things moving.

Billy is awesome and it sucks to know that he feels out like hes on the outside of the "r&f family", if you will. He really appreciatd the email i sent him after he was on th show and im sure he appreciates this thread alot too. Im willing to contribute for sure. We could start yet another "gang" for staples supporters. Tentative group name...the Staples Singers?

I like the Ronfez.net outreach, but I don't think Earl is interested.

He put that bit where Harry destroyed Billy on the best of show yesterday. That was fucking brutal and although I like Billy I think we can say Harry came out on top of that fight. And then Ron felt like Billy was upset with him at the end which pissed Ron off big time.

We like ya though Staples. Call in more if you can. Go in if at all possible.

I have great memories of Billy's contributions to the show. The Lobster Claws show should be contributed to the Museum of TV and Radio. I wish him the very best.

Billy: Well I don't have children.
Ron: Yes, you have a daughter ... it's a sad thing Billy forgets he had a daughter.
Fez: Why do we contantly have to remind him?
