Do people do this anymore? I've lived in an apartment for so long I'm out of touch with what they do in neighborhoods.

We used to do this quite a bit as kids, either by our own choice around the block or through our church we would go sing to shut-ins. The best part was when people would have cookies and brownies to give you.

But the world has changed somewhat. I don't know if I'd open my door if I saw a group of people standing there. I'm so paranoid now. Is this a dying tradition?

That sounds so quaint. I love Christmas Carols but don't like the caroling thing anymore.

I am heading out to sing carols with friends tonight. However, because I live in Portland, our songlist is heavily ironic:

1. Journey- Separate Ways

2. All My Loving- Beatles

3. Hey Ya- Outkast

4. You Can't Always Get What You Want- Rolling Stones

5. We Are The World- Live Aid

6. Crazy Little Thing Called Love- Queen

7. Great American Hero Theme- Joel Scarbury

8. I Want You To Want Me- Cheap Trick

9. Cold As Ice- Foreigner

10. Crazy- Gnarls Barkley

11. Hungry Like The Wolf- Duran Duran

12. Borderline- Madonna

13. Ziggy Stardust- Bowie (according about Ron, it's about Jesus!)

14. Facts of Life Theme

15. Sweet Child O' Mine- GNR

16. Holiday Road- Lindsey Buckingham

and naturally

17. Sister Christian- Night Ranger

I took 15 cub scouts carolling to nursing homes last saturday. This weekend our little town is having a community hymn/carol sing at the square with a candle lit silent night and a wreath laying ceremony at the veterans memorial. Christmas in a small town .

"Christmas in a small town, snowflakes falling down. Lovers walking hand in hand with new friends that they found. when I was a kid my brother and I would go around caroling to make xmas money. We were like 10. We did pretty good, we always made enough to buy xmas presents for our parents.

My church used to do it. I'm not sure if they still do, since I've become less church going since I graduated high school.

I know though, that to feel like it's Christmas I have to go to my churches Christmas Eve service. The best part is the singing of Silent Night in the sanctuary with candles lit in the dark.

I suppose it's kind of like a cult, and a fire hazard at that.

We did it in some of my neighborhoods growing up. But I grew up on navy bases, so it was safe.

Oh, carol
Dont let him steal your heart away
Im gonna learn to dance
If it takes me all night and day

Climb into my machine so we can groove on out
I know some swinging little joint where we can jump and shout
Its not too far back on the highway not so long a ride
You park the car out in the open you can walk inside
A little cutie takes your hat and you can thank her maam
cause every time you make the scene you find the joint is jammed

Oh, carol
Dont let him steal your heart away
Im gonna learn to dance
If it takes me all night and day

Now, if you want to hear some music like the boys are playing
Hold tight, bang your foot dont let it carry you away
Dont let the heat overcome you when they play so loud
Wont the music intrigue you when they get a crowd
Well you cant dance I know you would you could
I got my eyes on you, baby, cause you dance so good

Oh, carol
Dont let him steal your heart away
Im gonna learn to dance
If it takes me all night and day

Oh, carol
Dont let him steal your heart away
Ive got to learn to dance
If it takes me all night and day

The honest to God last time I saw it was when I was a kid, maybe 10 years old, over at my aunts house in Queens Village. We were there on Christmas eve, having dessert after dinner and we hear singing outside the house. Someone ran to the window and said there were carolers out there on the side walk. We all went out front and there was a group of stangers, all singing Silent Night and we listened to them, smiling, and when they finished, my uncle collected money from the people at the party and gave it to them, and they moved on down the block to the next house.
The closest thing I have seen recently is this Portuguese tradition where two people will sing at each other this same song (I cant undertsand it) and they must be altering the words, teasing each other and everyone watching is laughing their asses off. Seems like this song is only sung at Christmas.

The only time I saw it done was in Germany....When my wife was alive, we went back to Germany to her hometown(Bamberg) every other year.....the people from the local Catholic church would walk around the village singing and getting drunk......

There's no Christmas caroling where I live in fear of intended drive by shootings.
