I'd like some input on this. Turkey has the opportunity to join the European Union, and there are calls from Europe to say "no".

On one hand, Turkey has been a secular state that participates well in NATO, and is a trade partner with most of Europe. It is considered to be the "bridge" between Europe and the Middle East and Southwest Asia.

But most contend Turkey is not "Europe" It doesn't play nice with Greece tradewise, while Greece is a partner in NATO. Most of its citizens are Muslim, and Europe is tired of Islam.

But why not? If they do not get to join, Turkey's muslims will think that Europe is not allowing them into the club based on the country's main religion. It would be a slap in the face to a country that has supported the West economically and strategically.

What do you all think?

I dont know if this is because I am bias since I am greek, but I do not think they should be able to join the EU. They are not part of Europe. I have many turkish friends who were either born there or parents were born there and they do not like being referred to as Europeans or being from Europe, they hate it. I can see why Turkey as a government and a business wants to be part of the EU but I am sure the people do not want to be part of Europe.

Good point. Most of Turkey does not want to be referred as European, but that is what their classification would be if they join the EU. When the topic first came out, it seemed 2 out of 3 Turks wanted to be in the EU, but now it seems only a third of Turks want in.

There's gotta be something to nationalism sometimes.

We're going to have to same problem if Russia decides to join the EU.

If the majority of Turks want in, I say let them in.
