So I was watching TV today and flipped onto a movie at a really great scene, and started trying to think about what makes a scene good or bad. I gave up on that quick, because I think it's not something you can put your finger on, it just works out sometimes or it doesn't. Also, I don't think it matters too much if the movie itself is any good, sometimes a scene stands up on its own.

So what are the very best movie scenes?

hmmm

the scene from goodfellas where the gang is introduced in the long steadicam shot at the local italian haunt. the long intro is great, and the first of two really long intricate moves scorsese makes in this movie. all the dialogue between the narator and the on-screen folks is great, and it ends with the 'am i here to amuse you' part, classic

I can't put my finger on why I like this scene so much. It really plays no integral part in the movie. Maybe that's why I like it? It's the first one that popped in my head.

The scene from Fargo with Mike Yanagita..

scarface? goodfellas? billy crudup? y'all are a bunch of real cinematiques, i was talking about the "banana boat song" scene from beetlejuice.

and since i'm thinking about it a little more, there's something about the scene in saving private ryan where they first find matt damon. i'll watch the whole first 120 minutes of that movie just to see that part. since it all really builds from d-day, a secret mission, vin deisel dieing to that being so low-key, it's great.

same goes for the dagobah scene in empire when luke meets yoda.

Maybe I should actually explain the scene (duh):ÿ It begins with a traffic jam inside a tunnel.ÿ There is a man (the main character, Guido) in one of the cars, which begins to fill with smoke.ÿ He tries to open the doors and windows, but to no avail.ÿ He finally gets out, floats above the cars back out into the light.ÿ We then see him floating high in the air, with a rope attached to his leg, a man holding the other end of the rope standing on the beach below (as if he is flying a kite).ÿ The man pulls the rope, and Guido falls into the ocean.ÿ He then wakes up.ÿ It's beautiful.
