Hey Buddays - The good news is that I GOT A NEW JOB TODAY! (same company) Yea me !

The bad news is that my new boss said that I will probably need to take advantage of vendor's offers to play golf occassionally because that's where the really good deals are made [To quote Fezzie - "The drinks are flowin, and the deals are rollin"]. Problem is I haven't played golf in like 15 years, and I sucked at it when I did try ! What is the best way to not totally embarass myself on the golf course (quickly)? Full out lessons? Or is there a book like Golfing for Dummies?

/Shit, I'm gonna have to buy some clubs now too - Need advice on that without breaking the bank too please !/

Go to your local course, and book a few lessons with the Pro. Should be reasonable, and if it is slow, he will let you onto the coarse for a few holes, gratis.

Check ebay for clubs. (or my basement. I'm going on 10 years) Mind the shipping charges though.

Ok, seriously. Most crappy sports stores (Dicks, Modells, and Sports Authority) will have decent sales AFTER the holidays. If you can wait that long. You can also try pawn shops and consignment shops if you have time to drive around and look at stuff. And lastly, you can try FreeCycle. Everything on there is free, but you have to live close by to pick it up.

Good luck!

I'm going to level with you FFP, golf is one of the hardest sports to pick up quickly. I'd get clubs quickly and go to the driving range or go golfing if you can with someone who's good and is willing to be patient in teaching you. You need to practice, but you have to practice correctly and really listen to the person teaching you. Hopefully he has good form and is a good teacher. Your not going to be perfect and you are going to duff some, but those issues are resolved in time. I'd say if you want to be decent, start with your irons and work extremely hard on them. Work on the different levels of grass. Then start chipping and putting. Then finally driving. As a beginner most of your shots will be iron shots. GOOD Luck FFP.

If you're golfing with Vendors you only have to be good for about 1 or 2 holes, after that everyone is usually drunk. I'd work on your drinking game if anything.

I would suggest drinking excessively while out on the course. You will be the life of the party and can blame any problems on the drinking.

I have golfed off and on for the last 14 years, and I still suck. I don't know what you want to pay for clubs, but you can get a set of irons, custom fitted for about $400. This might be better than spending more for a big name brand, if not properly fitted. My friend got some and they immediately improved his game about 10 strokes.

Start out at the driving range, then once you have a feel for what seems to work for you, maybe invest in some group lessons or a class or something. Good luck!

The important thing is not to hold up better golfers you're with especially if they are your customers/clients. Play it straght up and realize that they are really in it for the free round and some fun. Hell, the fact that they'll beat you most of the time won't really hurt your work either. Just be honest and I'm sure some of them will help you the most with your game. If you're off real bad, just pick up and don't hit three drives on every hole. You'll eventually get good enough to really get hooked, especially if you're out there a lot. So, what is the new job and where?

Yeah, seriously, I don't know why it's so bad to like golf. If it really means something to your career, then you should find a post holiday sale and buy a decent set of matching clubs. Take a couple of lessons (If you're in NYC you can take lessons at Pier 59 or Randall's Island year round), and then go out and have fun, which is much much more important than being good.

And, by fun, I don't mean, hey I'm hitting the ball the wrong way! There's actually something really cool about someone who's not all that great at golf, but has a good attitude and realizes that the whole point of it is to have fun.

So, go do that.

Yes, I will remember to just have fun and not worry about it too much. The new job is Distribution Contract Mgr which means that I will be negotiating deals with all the freight companies that our company uses to ship product around. So all the freight company reps will be sucking up to me. It's nice for a change to be the suck-ee instead of sucker (god I hope that does not wind up as a Mod quote).

get used to the fact that you wont be using your driver, that you need to let them know up front that you havent played in years, and a couple of good putts is more impressive than a 200 yard smash with a 1.
