<p>So I just moved back to NY and need to get a license again here, with my new name.</p><p>5 Years ago, the last time I went to the DMV in NY, they gave you a temporary paper id until your real one came in the mail. This would suck because I want to get this taken care of this week, but I'm going out in Manhattan this weekend and will probably get carded.</p><p>So are they still doing the temp paper id's? In NJ they print your license right there.</p><p>What happens if I go to the NY DMV and say I can't find my NJ license? I had a NY drivers license when I lived in NY... will they be able to check NY/NJ records and confirm that? I just don't want to be stuck without ID for weeks while I wait for a perm NY license.</p><p> </p>

I got my driver's license in June. When I went for the learners permit in February, they gave me a temporary paper.. then mailed me the permit.

I did it recently and yes you are correct. You will be without an id. The new Id did get to me in about a week. Wish I had a better answer! I hope your work id or a prior Id has your birthdate on it.

<p>Duh</p><p>I just remembered I have my passport. So i can use that as ID.</p>
What is the reason that they don't print it out at the DMV? It seems like extra work and expense for them to send it out after the fact.

I don't know it's stupid. I was amazed at how easy NJDMV was compared to NY. I walked in on a SATURDAY, filled out forms, took a picture, waited for about 10 minutes, then they printed my license out and I was done. I'm dreading hitting the local NYDMV
The NJDMV is actually quite easy. I had to get a new license this summer (using their 6-points policy), and it took me less than 15 minutes to get in and out, and it was on the night that the DMV was open late so I expected to spend an hour there.

<p>nj dmv was just completely overhauled 2 or 3 years ago. ever wonder why almost all fakies were nj cards? because they were soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo easy to fake. the ny system is well due for an overhaul, but like everything else its lazy. </p><p>so short answer its because its brand new, and it prevents fraud in someway. PA has it like that as well, you get it in about 10 minutes. </p>
