THe Baby Boomers were too cool to listen to Muzak, or elevator music, so they came up with "Smooth Jazz". Where they take classic jazz songs and suck every bit of life out of them until they become acceptable to play in any office environment.

THere are some good artists, like any genre. George Benson is great. I love Sade. Grover Washington had his moments. But its basically Jazz instrumental done in the pop framework. Hook, bridge, solo, repeat.

Its OK as an intro to jazz music, but get to the real stuff (Miles/Coltrane/Monk/Art Blakey) as soon as you can.
