What is Rap music all about?

I have a neighbor whose teen son is into some kind of noise called rap music. I hear him blasting it from his car, and the so called singing cracks me up. Is it a gay thing? I never see him hanging with chicks? Can someone please tell me what's the story with this awful noise?
