Sad news. Luckily he leaves behind a stunningly brilliant body of work.

for all the gamblers out there rent California Split on DVD. Long
before the texas Holdem craze Altman was way ahead of the
curve. It's the tale of just two degenerate gambler, no real story
per se. Just a great character study.

Also Nashvile, The Long Goodbye, and McCabe & Mrs Miller aren't
so bad either

Just avoid Dr T and The Women

One of the few geniuses of American film. Other interesting Altman films to check out include: Thieves Like Us, Vincent and Theo, and Secret Honor (a one man show with Philip Baker Hall as Richard Nixon).

Hated his politics, but absolutely loved:

Whoever thought to make that gem of a picture into an awful TV show should be shot

Speaking of MASH, one of my favorite things he did with that picture were the scenes where there was really no dialogue scripted, and he just let the actors act....just brilliant...

I also love the story of how they used all the stuff going on with "Patton" at the same time to completely hide from Fox as to what was going on with their movie...even coming in severely under budget...Gould and Sutherland thought the guy was so nuts, they tried to have him fired...
