Anyone who thinks that was a bit is giving him WAAAAYYY too much credit. If it was a bit, where was the payoff? Where was the punch line? The idea of doing shock bits is to make people uncomfortable, make them squirm a little and then the punch line has more effect. He had nothing after calling the guys nigger, and judging by the crowd reaction, nothing before that either. He just lost it, period. KKKramer I think Paul Rodriguez got it right Rodriguez, also at the news conference, said: "I kept expecting a punch line. It didn't come."Is Letterman really going to have him on after that? I wouldn't.

Its just one black guy who cant handle a lame joke. Im sure if there was the counterpart of this at a black majority comedy club where you had a black comic saying white jokes and a white guy snapped like the black guy in this clip did , no one would back him up and he'd probally leave in shame. And we're in the North so 50 years ago it wasn't that bad for blacks as the ones in the south so dont fucking complain. Kramer's not racist, just told a lame joke that didn't go over too well and there happend to be a "bitch" in the crowd.

This pisses me off cus watching the video my reaction is that heres a performer who was really aggrivated that some dudes werent paying attention so he said 'okay assholes, im not interesting enough, you asked for it, pay attention to this'  and then proceeded to say some things that would make anyone pay attention.  When he walked off the stage he was saying 'there are still those words...' like there are still those words that will set anyone off, shock anyone, and you asked for them tonight.   The black guys called out cracker and im gonna kick your white ass and all that which just shows that we go for the most rotten reaction we can think of, but noone is outraged that those black guys are racist.  Richards was just making a point, and i think he's really upset now that people couldnt possible understand his gut reaction and really think he's racist- which is one of the biggest stigma's that can be put on someone these days.  And everyone running out of that place is a pussy, afraid to be labeled racist for not being outraged too.   I didnt go through 5 pages of this thread, so im sorry if this opinion was already stated verbatem by someone else.

Ok, first of all, I'm black... I have no issue with his use of the word nigger. My gripe is the other things he said. The refernece to lynching, and his saying that "that's what happens when you talk about the white man", or something down that avenue. Also, let's all stop the games and just say it: the word "Cracker" does not have the history of contempt and persecution that the word "Nigger" has. Also, only a handfull of black people use it, where as every ethnicity utilizes the word, "Nigger". And once again, I have no issue with his use of the word. I've heard it, and continue to hear it from every race constantly, so I'm numb to it. But what he said aside from that is what I have a huge problem with. And to end my point: you can apoligize for any comment, or action, but you cannot apoligize for who you are! He deliberately said what he felt. If that's who he is, then fine. He has his first ammendment right and I don't dispute that. But others will excercise that same right to question you statements.

He would have been fired on the spot.  Different levels of racial intolerance, and in a way, the acceptance of racial slurs like Irvin's, is almost like whites are saying, it's okay, you are black, you are not expected to be responsible enough or smart enough to behave yourself. There are numerous times I feel like telling loudmouths in movie theaters, in restaurants, on subways, to stop acting all loud and ignorant, but don't because we are conditioned to accept this level of people behaving badly. Anyway, I don't agree with the choice of words he used and the fact that he felt it necessary to hit them where it hurts most, but I sure understand his reaction to loud mouth, rude, ignorant behavior.

I think the most pathetic part of the whole fiasco is Jerry Seinfeld shooshing the crowd on Letterman and telling them not to laugh because it isn't funny. If he ever expected a crowd who knew nothing of Richards but his electro-shock Seinfeld doo and didn't  know him as anything but Kramer, then Jerry is kidding himself. I am also surprised this hasn't been mentioned more than once or twice in this thread, but these people WERE heckling him. It's not like it is uncommon for a comedian to go into a tirade against some heckler in the crowd. If a comic allows that type of behavior to to go on then he quite frankly doesn't take his craft very seriously. Go to a Def Comedy Jam show as a white guy and heckle a black comedian, I can safely guarantee you that there will be some insult made about your race. Not only that but instead of the crowd being shocked, you'll get your ass laughed out of the building.

here's a post i made on another board. i thought it'd help in what im trying to convey to you guys... A post I made on another board aside from that, theyre riding on the back of the word nigger in order to defend richards. i keep saying this again, and again, because if you look at how the media handled this, youll see my point. they basically summed up his tirade as being wrong only because he said the word nigger, which brought a lot of people to defend him with the, "they use it too" line. what theyre trying to divert our attention from is the other comments he made. the word nigger, was far less disgusting than his comments about lynching, and his overall superiority complex. but if they keep riding off the entire "nigger" argument, it will be easier for richard's case" if you watched the media coverage yesterday, you'll recognize the tactic. thats exactly what they did. this entire thing was dispicable. ok, he used the word nigger, thats been established. now lets get off that and look at the other things he said. if you talk to black people that saw the entire clip that was provided, you'd realize that we were not so much offended by the use of the word nigger, but by the other things he said. yes he used the word nigger, we heard. we also hear the word being used by others in our community as well as those outside of it. should we use the word? of course not! should others? no! i personally have stopped using the word because im trying to take the, "they use it too" argument away from those that defend their use of it. id just like to live my life without hearing it, but that isnt realistic since the word will never die. ive come to accept that. im going to hear nigger everyday of my life, big fucking deal.but god, stop dwelling on his use of the fucking word and look at the other things he said. also notice his tone and the hatred in his voice as hes saying it. the way in which he said those things suggested that those thought might have been stirring in his head for a while. the man is racist. he shouldnt have to apoligize to anyone, or donate any money to any organization. he made his comments and he should just man up and stick by them. at least strom thurmond (sp?) had enough balls to do that.ask around, black people dont really pay much attention to racists. what pisses us off is when people want to be closet racists. seriously, if you're going to hate me, or my community, do it openly. thats who you are and im not trying to change you nor do i really want or care to. years ago, i was friends with a guy that openly said he hates all black people. we were the best of friends! you know why? because he was honest about his position and didnt try to hide it.richard's entire apoligy last night was tripe forced out of him by a concerned publicist or nbc execs afraid of sales of the 7th season dvd. anyone can apoligize for their actions or whatever they choose to say, but they can not apoligize for who they are. fuck, this whole thing is a headache

I got a chance to see Paul Mooney on NBC's 24/7 digital channel here in LA. What he it boiled down to is that if it's funny then it's ok. This was not funny. It was a man having a nervous breakdown on stage. The only thing worse than his breakdown was his apology on Letterman. That was ultimate cringe TV.

This message was edited by sleepyeyed_Jynx on 11-26-06 @ 4:46 PM I think it goes deeper to the whole nation continuing to tie culture to race.   Should all blacks be allowed to use the word?  What about the black americans not tied to american slavery?  Are they less entitled?  When people try to make this you vs. us perspective they rationalize their belief that there are inherent differences between the races.   Whether there really is yet to be seen, but the moral stand  taken was to eliminate that type of thinking in the 60's.  Except now we see it furthered in terms of diversity and culture.   Its created the same type of split in races that we had before.  I think we are finally getting there, but i think the right type of thinking was for culture to be based on location not race.  The closer we get to that the sooner we can end all this crap, about a race being inherently entitled to use a certain word based on something no one in this generation has experienced.
