I have a neighbor whose teen son is into some kind of noise called death metal. I hear him blasting it from his car, and the so called singing cracks me up. Is it a gay thing? I never see him hanging with any chicks? Can comeone please tell me what's the story with this awful noise?

When I was little my dad sat me and my brother down and we watched a christian movie about the sinful world of death metal. They showed gwar and some other crazy things. I had nightmares about Gwar's costumes.
Aphex Twin, Defragmentation, Squarepusher, I could go on, they are all really talented and make amazing music. Also a lot of the musicians that play in Britney Spears band and on all those albums are studio musicians doing it for money, it isn't that easy to play such repative music and keep it in the pocket the whole time. I don't listen to or particularly enjoy pop, but it isn't easy to just shit out #1 hits -- if it was everyone would be doing it.

It was a passing joke. Electronic instruments and the like are used in forms of Rock and Metal too. We were just venting.

I don't see why it is such a big deal if someone doesn't get your music. Its a personal thing, some people like it, some don't. I don't expect everyone to like my music, but at least you could show some respect for it. The musicians that playing in almost everything you hear on the radio are talented, whether you think so or not. Death metal guys have serious chops, even if its kinda tough to listen to sometimes there are a lot of great musicians there. There is one death metal band with a former jazz drummer playing for them, I forgot the name of the band, but maybe someone else knows. Anyway, just stop bashing other people because you don't like their music. oooooo you don't like Amahd Jamal and Bill Evans, that means you're an ass! no, no it doesn't. it means that they have different tastes.

It'll never be considered part of pop music, because you have to get commercial radio play for that, but it's easily the biggest "alternative" genre on the American music scene, at least from what I can see.

As far as the whole debate about the artistic worth of death metal, it's definitely musically challenging. I haven't listened to enough of it to really have any judgment on it from a lyrical standpoint. I've always viewed the whole appeal of it as a being a whole "release" factor in that the aggressiveness of the music, anger, and the whole environment of a live show produce that. I could be wrong, though...like I said, it's not my particular tastes.
This message was edited by K.C. on 11-19-06 @ 6:53 PM
Being a "cult genre" isn't a bad thing. Shit, most of what I listened to probably falls under that umbrella. For better or for worse, a lot of music isn't terribly relevant on the larger "scene," and I feel death metal falls into that category. Genres that typically push too far to any musical extreme are usually in worlds unto themselves, with only small aspects of their music branching out onto other bands/acts.

There were a number of bands that definitely had a "Seattle sound," but the big mainstays of "grunge"...Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, STP, Screaming Trees, etc....really don't fit together sonically. Their influences alone are too varied. That makes it tricky figuring out when "grunge died" since it really didn't seem to exist in the first place.

Grunge became such a disaster of a catch all genre, which has been indicitive of rock for some time, just think about all that bands that got labeled "Nu-Metal" and how awful that fad was, when the truth of the matter is you could have taken a good number of them and placed them in different genres without anyone batting an eye. Slipknot is alternately placed in Heavy/Trash Metal by fans or in Nu-Metal by critics. The same was true of STP in the early nineties, fans called them Alternative, critics called them Grunge. It's all a sham MAAAAN.

Since I started this thread, let me clarify a few things. First of all, maybe calling Death Metal "gay" was a poor choice of words. However, when I see a group of teens, all male, hanging out in a garage for years and not a girl in sight, it made me wonder. I'm not an old man, and I listen to rap, hip hop, salsa and even some jazz. I just didn't understand how a type of "music" with constipated grunts and annoying guitars appeals to anybody. I see that a poster named Mo has been on a rampage, attacking me and others who disagree with him, and to be honest, he comes across as a total dick. Maybe if you tried to explain the genre instead of attacking others you might have more friends, and judging by your pics, I doubt if any woman would touch you. So there, take your shots. I was curious about Death Metal and your attitude convinced me that there is something anti-social and dysfuntional about what you play and listen to.

Moe just loves to get all self-righteous when he feels he's been wronged and or is on the majority view point's side. My advice to you would be don't take it to his level and realize he'll rip in and then run claiming "he's above it". That's the funny thing, he does this and leaves the board all the fucking time in tiffs like a little spoiled rich kid with his toys at a friends house. I truly believe he gets pissed when people don't just kiss his ass simply bc of post count. Most normal people don't give two shits about that, but rather a normal discussion where you can hold your own on the topic and not run away when people call you out on your own attitude.
