Verizon Wireless?

This is blatant asking-for-a-favor.

Anyone out there use verizon wireless? My phone died, and apparently
Verizon's changed their policy such that I can't resign a new contract and
get a new phone at the promotional price despite having had my current
phone since last October... at any rate, my phone died, and I'd just activate
my old one... except that I gave it to my mom because someone drove over
her phone in a Costco parking lot.

I'm not paying verizon $150 for a new phone... I'm considering ebay...
however I figured there might be other people (like I did) who have their old
phones sitting around unused.

Do you have an old CDMA (verizon) (GSM, like what cingular uses, won't
work) phone that you're not using anymore you want to sell me? send me a
PM/email me...

you'd think... but with shipping, they mostly come to around $60 for the
same or equivalent phone to what I had 4 years ago. not quite "dirt cheap"
enough for my poor ass...

and no, not looking for anything specific. As long as I can fit my phone book
in it and make/get text messages, I'll survive.

While I'm on the subjects - anyone have any experience with pay-as-you-go
cell phone plans?

Looking to get a cell phone for someone who has no reception at his house
(lives in the middle of the mountains) but would like to have one for
convenience when out meeting up with friends etc. - and I don't mean like
going out to the bar or whatever, but more infrequently, like when he drives
places to go climbing and whatnot.

It would probably be used only a few times a month, and for a few minutes,
most of the time. Maybe more if he's on a big road trip or something, but
that's only 3-4 times a year.

Looks like Cingular is the best bet so far, with the most coverage, and no
daily access charge the way Verizon has (what's up with that??) - $1/day
you use the phone and $.10 a minute.... or straight up $.25 a minute (good
if you're using the phone less than what, 6 minutes a day or something).

Need to use all your minutes within a month or refill within a month so they
get rolle over, though, so you're looking at maybe $15/month or $25/3
months even if you don't use the phone at all... which is pretty trivial, but
maybe there's something better?

<p>My mother lives in Vermont (lots of mountains) and gets great coverage with Virgin Mobile.&nbsp; I don't know what the rates are, but she loves it because the only time she uses it is when she's driving down to visit.&nbsp; </p><p>Another friend of mine uses T-Mobile pre-paid because the minutes don't expire for a year.&nbsp; I have no idea about the coverage though.&nbsp;</p>

Thanks Gvac - I had already checked out the two sites. I think although you
get more minutes with T-Mobile, there's basically no coverage for about an
hour in any direction from his house. At least with Verizon and Cingular, he
can get coverage a few miles down the road if he needs to for some reason
or other (although he's so anti technology, I don't foresee that happening).

Virgin's coverage looks better for his needs - will look into it more.

I also looked into Boost (seriously... can't deal with the whole WHERE YOU
AT bullshit)... I don't even know what other services there are out there.

Most companies will let you re-up for another two year contract at the 1 year mark.&nbsp; You seem to be close enough where this would work.&nbsp; I know with Cingular I get a new phone about ever year and get the 2 year contract discount.&nbsp; I would check with Verizon and see if they offer such a plan.&nbsp; If that fails just drop your plan to the lowest monthly rate possible and start a new one.&nbsp; I know a grip of people who have done this.

I know they should. They won't. I've always had 2 year contracts and since
1998, I've only had one phone for more than one year. I don't know what
the hell is going on but it stinks.

I did mention this in my original post already.
