Who knew books would be the second best thing about Bangkok? This place has some of the best used bookstores I've ever seen.

Finished recently:

Graham Greene - The Captain and the Enemy

Asne Seierstad - The Bookseller of Kabul (true story I had heard was crap before but couldn't remember why. Someone gave me the book in Egypt and it turned out to be really good - one of the few books to tell good and bad and inbetween about Muslims.)

Elmore Leanord - Pagan Babies - (all Elmore Leanord is great)

Working on:

Seven Pillars of Wisdom - T.E. Lawrence (so much better than I expected. Should have started it two years ago.)

Seymour Hersh - Chain of Command: The Road from 9-11 to Abu Ghraib - (Awesome piece of investigative journalism. Should be required reading for Americans.)

Dispatches - Michael Herr - (Mildly gonzo-style dispatches from a journalist during Vietnam. Intense. The guy was apparently hired as a writer for Apocolypse Now and Full Metal Jacket. I can see why.)

The Gunslinger was slow, but after that it was amazing. Very well written, very elaborate story. The end of book 7 is horiffic however.

I am reading World War Z right now...great book. Recently I read Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, one of the best and most savage books I have ever read. (Also read The Road by the same author; saddest thing I have ever read). Next I will be reading The Terror, by Dan Simmons.

George Packer - "Assassin's Gate: America in Iraq". I was so glad to finally get to a place where I could get this book - a Border's in one of the many giant malls in Kuala Lumpur. It's outstanding so far. Here's an article about the book I just found - "Confessions of a Humvee Liberal". As a journalist Packer fascinates me as much as his name does.

Finished recently: John Le Carre - Absolute Friends. Good novel about liberal politics in the Cold War to the Wurr on Turr. It's not what you might expect.

I've mentioned this book before, but my jaw just dropped upon hearing the news today that Oprah's next pick for her book club is Cormac McCarthy's The Road.

CHICAGO (AP) - Don't expect a lot of sunshine in Oprah Winfrey's latest book club pick. Publishing's leading hit-maker has chosen Cormac McCarthy's "The Road," a bleak, apocalyptic novel by an author who rarely talks to the media.
"It is so extraordinary," Winfrey said Wednesday. "I promise you, you'll be thinking about it long after you finish the final page."
McCarthy, 73, is known for novels such as "All the Pretty Horses" and "Blood Meridian," and has been widely cited as an heir to William Faulkner for his biblical prose and rural settings. Critic Harold Bloom, famous for his discerning taste, has called McCarthy one of the greatest living American writers, along with Don DeLillo, Philip Roth and Thomas Pynchon.
"The Road," published last September by Knopf, is a sparely written story of a father and son trying to survive as they wander through a burned and bare landscape. It was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle prize and is considered a leading contender for the Pulitzer Prize.
"It's unlike anything I've ever chosen as a book club selection before because it's post-apocalyptic. (It is) very unusual for me to select this book, but it's fascinating," Winfrey said.

This book is awesome, but I can't see Oprah's audience embracing it. It's chilling and hard core. It'll freak them out. Which is good, in a way.

I just finished Choke, by the guy who wrote fight club Chuck Palahniuk. I think that is how you spell his name. anyway it was really good and I def recomend it. it is a pretty quick read. Just like fight club, it makes you think about society and other moral and social issues.

Dexter was a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and the Sacramento Bee and a few other papers. This is a book of some of his columns. They range from dark and twisted to hysterical. Great book.

As well as a book out of this Great Courses series, which is a wonderful educational compilation of really engaging lectures on tape spanning basically everything from history to science to classical music. The one I'm enjoying now is called No Excuses: Existentialism and the Meaning of Life part two, by Dr. Robert Solomon.
