Neeson bedevils horror franchise at Morgan Creek
By Zorianna Kit
LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Liam Neeson is set to star in Morgan Creek Prods.' next installment of the "Exorcist" franchise, a prequel that has yet to be titled. John Frankenheimer is directing the project, which begins production in the spring in the United States, United Kingdom and Africa.
The "Exorcist" prequel traces the story of Father Merrin (Neeson) back to his first encounter with the devil while doing missionary work in post-World War II Africa.
William Wisher initially adapted the prequel for the big screen from William Peter Blatty's original "The Exorcist" novel. Best-selling author Caleb Carr rewrote the material (HR 11/9), which then caught the interest of Frankenheimer, who will segue into the project after he wraps shooting on the HBO feature "Path to War," in production.
Morgan Creek chairman and CEO James Robinson is producing the prequel, with production president Jonathan Zimbert executive producing.
Neeson, repped by ICM, next stars in Paramount Pictures' "K-19: The Windowmaker" and Miramax Films' "Gangs of New York." He was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his role in "Schindler's List."
