Your thread title pretty much sums up my feelings on this shit.
I never saw the appeal of watching a bunch of hillbillies driving around in a circle.

I have never understood the appeal of this sport. They just keep going around in circles. For hours at a time. Then they discuss how quickly someone changes a tire. I'm sure its an experience to attend a race, but it just sucks on TV.

NASCAR and Soccer were the same thing to me for a long time. A bunch of people doing something stupid. Then my uncle came to town and took me and my dad to a race while I was home from college. While the race was going on he was explaining what was going on and I was able to see it for myself.

I still don't like soccer, but if a race is on at a bar or if there isn't SHIT on TV I'll watch it. It's not like I'm a big fan, but I get it.

I hear the same thing from soccer fans "dude, if you understood what was going on you'd love it." but to me it just looks like a bunch of skinny foriegners running around kicking a ball back and forth.

There are just some sports that look like nothing's going on and there's nothing interesting until you get into it and learn the strategy/skill involved. I was in the "it's just cars going in circles" camp my whole life until I got to see a race. Now I know what it is and will watch a bit here and there.

used to be a hater, but once I sat down and actually WATCHED a race, it
turned out to be really fun and exciting, especially all the strategy
involved with the pit stops, etc.

And I would MUCH
rather watch a good race than a crappy NFL game where every team is
mediocre and runs the same exact plays and is all about matchups, ie
"how can i get my 4th wideout on the other team's 5th corner" etc.

And
another thing, why does everyone assume NASCAR is simply a "southern"
type of thing? One of the big hangups people have had about
NASCAR in recent years is that its MOVING AWAY from the south, and
running in more places like the Midwest, California, Phoenix,
etc. A lot of the drivers aren't southern any more either (Tony
Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, etc.)

Granted, I think a lot of it is growing up a fan of something. If anyone in my family watched it when I was little, maybe I'd like it more.

I have no interest in going to a race, but I know I that's not giving it a fair chance. I tell Southerners the same thing about hockey. Until you go see it in person, you can't say you don't like it. I choose to stay ignorant. I don't know if me and my black husband would feel quite comfortable in a crowd of 150,000 white Nascar fans, but that's besides the point.

However I have caught myself watching some of the Indy car racing. To me that is much more entertaining. I like how fast they go and that they don't go around in circles as much.

Have been to NASCAR, IRL, and FORMULA ONE races. I wouldn't pay to watch any of it anymore.

NASCAR was alright when you didn't have to sit in traffic for hours to get in. And it was also better without the roof flaps and the restrictor plates. You just gotta love seeing some dickhead flipping end over end about 8 times. It's like someone wrote before. It's now like watching highway traffic. I even remember once at Talladega when this guy flew over the wall and into the parking lot. Those complaining about Redneck drivers? No way. Most of those rednecks own their own jets. Some even fly them. And Rednecks? The main star WAS this guy who had his sexuality continually questioned. What was his name? Had a car painted like A RAINBOW. And then changed that to FLAMES.
"Those complaining about the speeds being too high should get a rag, soak it with kerosene, and tie it around their ankles so the ants won't eat their candy-asses"....Dale Earnhardt (famous dead racer).

IRL is really fast paced but they seem to want to do the NASCAR deal only with open wheels. Make all cars the same. That makes an almost artificial competition. And having a chick as their main star? Okay. BUT HOW ABOUT WAITING TILL SHE WINS A FUCKIN' RACE? And oh yeah. Those that hate race fans should encourage them to go to IRL races. Their cars break apart and sometimes the debris flies into the stands. My brother went to an IRL race where 3 people got killed. Killing your own fans is really counter-productive.

FORMULA ONE is all technology. The cars turn upwards of 18,000 RPM. Having one scream by is like have a drill-bit pushed through your skull. All kidding aside. Their cars are mechanical marvels. Watching them is like watching full sized slot cars. You're thinking there's no way they can take turns that fast. Unbelievable. But the races are seldom competitive.

If I want to go to a race I'll just go to the local dirt track. There will be the guy with a car #666. Or LUCKY #7. Someone will have a big Bart Simpson doll as a co-pilot. The beer will be cold and cheap. You won't spend hours in traffic. And the drivers? There are always enough no-talents on the track to keep it interesting.

There are many sports that require you to have actually participated in them on some level to be able to fully appreciate them. I guess NASCAR is one such sport. It's an ignorant and asinine statement, and to someone who's never played maybe that's what they perceive but there is far more going on to the untrained eye. No sport in the world requires more agility, grace, physicality, and creativity than hockey, and I feel bad for people who grew up playing basketball while I was playing hockey. To me, basketball is the lamest and most boring sport on the planet. All they do is bounce the ball and dunk it, just like NASCAR drivers just drive in circles and hockey players just fight.

That's why our latest "Dream Teams" get their asses kicked in international competition.

But don't pretend like it's even remotely close to the physical nature of all the other major sports. Golfing on a regular basis is harder to do physically than NASCAR racing. I'm sorry, I'm not impressed with that. I know there are risks, but hey, I'm still not impressed. I never said it's not physically taxing, just that it's an absurd extreme of a ridicuously long car drive. Backyard football still ideally has the same elements of football, namely all the different options as to how a play is going down on both sides, making the game incredibly varied mentally and physically. NASCAR has passing another car, driving fast and trying not to crash. Pardon me if I'm not thrilled or impressed with the tremendously limited options. If you played ping-pong for several hours straight it's physically taxing...doesn't mean I put it up there with the major sports. Having the chance of killing yourself in a flaming wreck is dangerous and interesting, but it doesn't mean it's suddenly a sport like we think of basketball/football/baseball/hockey/etc.. If that's the case, shit like monster truck rallies are a sport. Racing in general strikes me more as a fancy hobby than a "typical sport." Choosing to sit in a car and drive in an "x-treme" way doesn't suddenly mean you're magically playing a sport.

There was a kid in my class last year and i used to rank on him because he thought he was a hardcore nascar fan. And im like hows your thunderbird and he'd say "its a FIREBIRD! A FIREBIRD!" , then if he'd have a corvette shirt on i'd say "corvette? Do you have one?" He'd say no and i'd reply "wouldnt that make you a corvette poser then?" and my favorite was when he'd wear his Dale Jr sweatshirt where i'd just read dale earnheart jr's name and say "dale jr? wheres dale senior?" and he'd just laugh, yea it was dark humor but i love it.
I thought I liked Nascar, but after reading this thread I realize that I don't.
