So I noticed that there are yankees and redsox threads but no Phillies. I know there are a ton of O & A and Ron & Fez fans in philly so show some pride!

I really think that soriano will be in a phillies uniform next year but who else do you want??

Zito? Schmidt? Bullpen help? Thirdbase?

No way, the yankees wait until the player is in his 40's to sign him. Howard still has a while

They are in the Soriano sweepstakes... nice line up..

Rollins, Utley, Howard and Soriano...

Burrell is gone they are going to just eat his contract... I doubt he is going to waive his no trade clause I doubt he wants to stand in left feild at CBP getting booed for the next three years..

are Wolf and LIeberthal both gone? Wolf is a nice sleeper.. I would like to keep him

Myers, Hammel, Lieber, Wolf not a bad four...

I would like to see them upgrade RF and the Pen

I think that with the way victorino played center last year they should look into trading rowand for some pitching

Gillick will surely help the phils move in the right direction with more power as he did in Toronto. And the yanks won't get Howard or Utley unless everyone else including the phils aren't paying attention. They need to keep them and I'm sure Gillick knows it and will sign at least one to an extension mid year based on results.

The Phillies are close to signing free agent Wes Helms to a two-year contract, making the veteran the favorite to become the team's starting third baseman.

No Soriano but I guess it will help.

NAPLES, Fla. - The Phillies have landed a free agent who produced impressive offensive numbers in 2006.

It's not Alfonso Soriano, though he remains high on the team's wish list.

Wes Helms is the newest Phillie. The 30-year-old infielder has reached agreement on a two-year contract worth about $6 million, sources said Wednesday night. Earlier in the day, general manager Pat Gillick said the Phillies were "absolutely" the front-runner to sign Helms.

An official announcement could come before Phillies officials leave the general managers' meetings on Thursday night.

A personal recruiting pitch from Gillick and the pledge of significant playing time at third base helped land Helms. With Helms on board, defensive stalwart Abraham Nunez could be used in a utility role. Helms also will serve as insurance behind Ryan Howard at first base.

"How he's used is Charlie's call," Gillick said, referring to manager Charlie Manuel.

Helms, a righthanded hitter, batted .329 and drove in 47 runs in just 240 at-bats with Florida in 2006.

The Phils had their eye on Helms last year, but he signed with Florida, where he played in 88 games at first base and 24 at third in 2006. He played with Milwaukee from 2003 to 2005, primarily as a third baseman.

Gillick said Phillies scouts liked the progress that Helms has made as a hitter. It showed in the second half of 2006, when he hit .385 in 130 at-bats after the all-star break.

While the pursuit of Helms comes to a successful conclusion, the quest to sign Soriano heats up. Gillick confirmed that team officials would meet with the leftfielder's representatives on Thursday. A meeting between the sides that had been scheduled for Wednesday had to be pushed back because of scheduling conflicts.

Gillick said the meeting would not take place at the Naples Grand Resort, where much of the baseball industry has gathered for the general managers' meetings. Soriano's team of representatives, led by Fern Cuza and Pat Rooney, are staying at an undisclosed hotel in the area. There had been rumblings Wednesday that Soriano was in town, but Gillick said the slugger would not be at Thursday's meeting.

Gillick confirmed that the team had not yet made an offer to Soriano, who also is drawing interest from the Dodgers, Angels, Cubs and Astros. Soriano is seeking a contract similar to the seven-year, $119 million deal that Carlos Beltran got from the Mets two winters ago.

"We like him," Gillick said. "We're studying the situation."

The Phillies definitely will talk money in their talks with Soriano's agents, but it's unclear whether an offer will come out of Thursday's meeting. Word around baseball is that the Angels are ready to meet Soriano's price. However, people close to Soriano have said he wants to stay on the East Coast.

Soriano, who will turn 31 in January, hit .277 with 46 homers and 95 RBIs for Washington in 2006. The Phillies envision him batting behind Howard in their lineup.

Phillies officials continued to meet with other clubs and agents Wednesday. Gillick said he met with the representative for a free-agent pitcher. He continues to try to re-sign lefthanded starter Randy Wolf. Gillick also said catcher is a position the team would like to address in the coming weeks.

In other matters at the GM meetings Wednesday, Tampa Bay paid $4 million for the negotiating rights to Japanese third baseman Akinori Iwamura. The Phillies had looked at Iwamura but weren't interested.

The Phillies will interview candidates for their vacant third-base coaching position early next week.

---

People locally want to knock Pat Gillick for not making "the big move" yet this offseason, but the bottom line is the team he has, at least up to this point, is at least as good as the Mets on paper. And that's their competition. Look at them in comparison

Phillies Starting Eight:

1. Rollins SS

2. Victorino RF

3. Utley 2B

4. Howard 1B

5. Burrell LF

6. Rowand CF

7. Ruiz/Coste C

8. Helms/Nunez 3B

Mets Starting Eight:

1. Reyes SS

2. Lo Duca C

3. Beltran CF

4. Delgado 1B

5. Wright 3B

6. Alou LF

7. Green RF

8. An. Hernandez/Jo. Valentin 2B

Those lineups are pretty comparable. The Phillies and Mets were the top two teams in runs scored in the NL last year.

Now, the rotations:

Phillies Starting Five:

1. Brett Myers

2. Cole Hamels

3. Jon Lieber

4. Jamie Moyer

5. Adam Eaton

Mets Starting Five (assuming they do bring Glavine back):

1. Tom Glavine

2. Orlando Hernandez

3. John Maine

4. Oliver Perez

5. Jason Vargas/Brian Bannister/Dave Williams

The Phillies rotation, again, on paper, blows that away at this point. Now if the Mets pull out a Zito or Jason Schmidt in the next few weeks, that changes everything, but at this point, that doesn't look likely. And if they end up losing Glavine and not signing Zito or Schmidt as well, they're in huge trouble.

Now where the Mets get their edge back is in the bullpen. That's what the Phillies need to sign. But you to figure the Phillies are definitely right in it, from looking at these teams at this point.

The Phillies landed Freddy Garcia from the White Sox for pitchers Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez.

Big move for them...it also could set off a chain reaction of moves.

This almost guarantees Jon Lieber is gone. The rumor before on Lieber was he'd go to the Brewers for Kevin Mench.

If that happened, acquiring Mench would mean a surplus of starting OFs which means THEN that either Rowand or Burrell could be traded to fill the middle relief help.

It look like it's all falling into place...now hopefully the Mets don't sign Zito.

Smart move and a reasonable contract. People can say what they want about the Phillies, but Pat Gillick's been pretty damn impressive as the GM so far.

He's completely overhauled it in a year while keeping them competative and now they're in an excellent position heading into '07 when you look at the rest of the National League.

And now he's starting to lock up the young guys. I think Gillick only signed a two year contract, though...they better extend him immediately.
