View Full Version : Anyone else dissapointed in Borat?

I saw Borat over the weekend and I was dissapointed big time. Everyone kept saying it crossed many lines and was so un PC. It had moments were he attacked certain people, but as a whole I think it was way over sold. If your gonna make a movie based on a tv character, it has to be funnier than the tv segments.

You need to be under 20 to think he's funny.
Mentally or chronologically.

I do kinda agree with you, but only because I have been spolied with a good few years of Borat from before he was even on in the US.

I think this movie served as a great introduction to the genius of Borat and will make people who havent seen him before search out his older stuff, which is just golden.

For those who had never seen or heard of Borat before, the movie was perfect. For those that had been waiting for this movie to arrive because of past Borat experiences, I can see exactly where they might feel a little bit jipped.

I think I agree with you 100%, it just kills me to hear everyone else calling the greatest comedy ever.

I never saw Borat before. I must seek out these older videos because I loved the movie. I must've seen it 5x already. His English is awful and fuckin kills me. The naked wrestling scene was classic with the fat sweaty balls and ass in his face. Making out with his prostitute sister. The rodeo guy talking about gays. The bear. The hooker at the dinner party. Breaking the antiques and offering a bag of pubic hair to pay for them.....do I need to go on?

From what I hear, this movie was made without permission or waivers being signed? I'm not sure what the controversy is but that makes it even better if that's true.

He is a funny mother fucker. I definitely missed the boat on Borat. Where do I find his old shit?

Gimme!

Old Borat stuff is available all over YouTube and for download on bit torrent sites.

A few of the classics include:

-Borat wine tasting
-Borat hunting
-Borat at a redneck bar
-Borat shopping for real estate
-Borat politicing door-to-door

AND SO MUCH MORE!

It was pretty much what I expected. I did not expect it to be funnier than the tv segments, just as funny, but in longer, movie form. Definitely not the funniest movie ever, but definitely not disappointing.

It may be "oversold" by certain people, but that's just their opinion.

Nope. I liked it a lot. I wouldn't say it's the greatest comedy film of all time or anything like that, though I had a great time and would definitely see it again.

Its just like Dane Cook you have to be under 20 to find him funny. I have watched his comedy special and his reality show on hbo and I just dont get how he is so popular. He has yet to make me even crack a smile.

I have to agree that it was not as good as his show, but it was still a good movie. It wasn't amazing, but it was entertaining. There were a couple of AMAZING scenes, but I felt like he dumbed it down a bit for the big screen. I would still reccomend this movie to friends, but it wasn't the groundbreaking movie I expected. Borat was a good movie, but it did not live up to my expectations. Not to go off on a tangent, but you should all check out Running with Scissors, it is a really well done dark comedy with beautiful cinematography, so if you are into that sort of thing you should check it out.

I saw the movie when it opened. I never really liked Candid Camera and that style of humor so the movie didn't appeal to me all that much. It had its moments but I didn't think it was laugh your balls off funny.

Calling it the funniest movie ever is going too far. The funniest thing I ever saw in a movie theater was the first 15 minutes of the South Park movie and Borat wasn't even close to that.

I can't say that i was disappointed since this was the first thing of Cohen's that I ever saw. Based on what everyone else has written about his older stuff being just as funny or funnier, I think I'll try and watch some of the older TV show stuff and decide then.

Dane Cook is the dullest comedian ever - ever - ever and shouldn't be tainting up a Borat thread. I thought the movie was funny, had some great moments and sequences, but in all I was annoyed by the forced narrative (I didn't need a reason for his cross country quest - especially what they came up with), I thought some of the scenes could have gone on just a little more and others cut out compltely, and I agree that had I not seen his earlier stuff I might have dug it more - but basically thought the same thing I thought when I finally saw "Napolean Dynomite" - it was funny, but over-rated.

If Borat is what is passing for SHOCKING or UN-PC these days, kids need to step away from their YouTube and check out pre-rated John Waters, Paul Bartel, HG Lewis, or Russ Meyer, to name just four from the last 25 years. One of the films showed at my film lil film fest a fews weeks ago was an homage to Meyer (Pervert!) - silly, goofy, and over the top, but a lot of fun and surprisingly well written and produced - and one of the under 24 year olds working at the theatre who saw it proclaimed it "the most disturbing movie he's ever seen" - this after laughing his ass off for 90 minutes.

I love the Ali G show and I watch it on HBO whenever it is on. I was VERY excited about the movie. I mean VERY excited. However...as of this morning, I still have yet to go see the movie.

From everything I have seen on the net, and on TV concerning the movie, I thought to myself that laughing at the subject matter that Boart does in the movie is easy to laugh at in the comfort of your own living room, but I think I might have a problem laughing at 'throw the Jew down the well' when I am sitting next to strangers in a packed theater.

I don't know....maybe it is just me, but I have somewhat decided that I will wait for the DVD.

I was supposed to see it this weekend with a friend of mine, and couldn't make it. Sounds like I saved $9.50. He said it was totally disappointing, and from what everyone is saying here, you all seem to agree. Too bad.

I watched the Ali G show religiously because I loved Borat, I had high expectations for this movie and they were met. Funniest movie ever? I don't know about that, but it was up there for me.

Oh, and I'm 27, not part of the "under-20" crowd. The shock of what some of those people said (rodeo guy, frat boys) was really unbelievable. I laughed through the whole thing.

I think a lot of people are trying to play "too cool for the room" by saying it sucked.

I'll wait until it's on cable to see it because even though I find him amusing, I don't have a burning desire to run out and see the movie. I also believe it'll never live up to the hype in my eyes.

I'm 28 and I loved the movie. So my answer is NO...I wasn't let down by the film. The naked scene has to be one of the funnier things I've seen in a movie in a long time. Perhaps you built up the film too much in your own mind.

I got more disappointed throughout the movie. I thought it was funny, but I kept noticing how fake it was over and over and over. Everyone told me how 'real' the movie was. A lot of it was setup and fake. The Pam Anderson thing was terrible. the old people's house was terribly fake. He barely even knocked and they answered the door already.

I'm 30 and I wasn't disappointed by it at all. I havent laughed like that in a long time. I also was a religious watcher of Ali G and that was one of the only shows that could make me spit whatever I was drinking out of my mouth. That and League of Gentleman.
