After reading Sniffen's post my first thought was too much Norton. I like Jimmy, but I don't think he should be on everyday. Rotating third mikes would be cool. I think the show is best when there's a third person who surprises occasionally like an odd story from Patrice or Burr... Mike Rowe is awesome today

I agree that their show is very segmented and they do not get into a "flow" like they used to. I miss the days of running a bit into the ground; that is when Norton and Ant are at their best.

The boys are way to sensitive these days too. The ballbusting with the fans is totally gone. They used to joke about negative feedback and make it funny; now Norton and Anthony yell at anyone who makes a negative comment. Or they say, "you just don't get the show." I get the show and I am still a fan; but IMO, they are taking themselves way more seriously than they used to, it just isn't as much fun.

I was thinking about this today and I really think O & A have changed considerably since moving to FreeFM. The show seemed to lean more towards political talk, inner workings of the show and current events before the move, now it's primarily "shock jock" type radio. Also, I'm not sure if it's part of the formula for the show, or if success has gotten to their heads, but Anthony and Norton are really different. They make illogical arguments, Anthony REALLY seems racist (when he makes broad ideological statements, it's really uncomfortable) and both are extremely defensive when they get criticized. I've been a huge O & A supporter (and an AVID listener, 4+ hours a day at least) for the past 6 years, and to be honest I've stopped listening to them and now only use my XM for Ron and Fez, Bob Edwards and occassionally music.

Wow that kind of sounds like the people of wackbag before the criticism was silenced, and others adopted the motto of flush, buy, fuck. Ehh. If you read wackbag you can see how well anthony is receptive to criticism. Alan Sniffen better watch his back because he's no longer a true "fan" of the show.

I agree with a lot of what he wrote but still love the show. It's just gone way too unbalanced toward Norton who is better in moderate doses. Shock humor is great, but Ant used to flow with intelligent creative riffs that weren't always based on fucking whores or touching kids. They also used to take the fans more serious and they used to be a bigger part of the show. Now they usually just get on to be ripped or it's pest based. I just hope Ant isn't getting closer to the "meditation rooms" that Stern would talk about setting up for his parents visits. Money seems to be the biggest show changer over time, just look at Eddie Murphy and Stern. Two very different fields but both fell hard.

Opie doesn't say it much, but did you know they don't do any prep for the show?

As much as I like Lil Jimmy, I agree with previous posts, there is just too much of him. Maybe if he was only on Fridays.

I also agree that Anthony gets cut off way too often before he gets on a roll. And the ONE thing that Opie was good at was playing straight man and feeding Anthony lines and set-ups. Norton always seems to cut in and disrupt it.

Alot of what Sniffen said makes sense to me. I disagree with the big thing to latch onto though. Anytime something like Voyeur Bus or 55 gallon drum challenge is going on its not that funny to me. The best thing about the show is just riffing on a topic. The way the show was on Wnew when they would go on and on about something was great to me. Also stop with some of these guests. China Doll, 2002 is on the phone your 15 minutes is long over.

I also agree with pretty much everything sniffen wrote, and I've been listening to O&A literally since day 1 back on WNEW. the two main points i agree with is they do seem to be a little bit too segmented now-a-days, and i miss the little show up against the big show atmosphere.

I agree with most of that article. I think we all agree Norton would kill in small doses, but every day he gets on your nerves.

Another thing thats missing from the show is danger. Pushing the envelope. At WNEW they used to try to top themselves on an almost daily basis. And would pull stunts that got them in trouble lef and right. They were a must listen, a must 'tell all your friends about them' show. Now they are still good, but just not as edgy as they were.

Plus, I think they're overworked. Who could do 6 hours of good radio daily? Its too much. Condense that to one 3 hour killer show and you're there.

I have been saying this for two years. Norton always makes it about himself, and how he loves trannies. Anthony always wonders why he never gets line of the day. Maybe its cause Norton hijacks his line right before the punch line hits. His ex girlfriend was right. he is a selfish old asshole.

the bigger picture is that O&A are still doing their jobs - getting people to talk about the show. whether the new version of the show is better/worse than the old shows doesn't matter - it is what it is. i remember the boys saying how they liked regular radio because it would prevent them from running bits into the ground, but sometimes, it stops bits from getting really good. and there are many times i tune out because of jimmy norton. as much as i think he's a great stand up, yeah, he hogs the mike sometimes. I am quick to blame Jimmy, but I think Opie and Anthony are both good enough at their jobs to be able to pick out what's going wrong and fix it Norton or no Norton. It's just so different and it's killing me because this was MY FAVORITE SHOW EVER FOR 7 YEARS AND NOW I CAN'T STAND IT.

It's lost something over the past 2 years. I dream of a situation where I'd get an audience with the show and be able to talk to them as a superfan who has listened to everything I could get my hands on ever since I learned their names who can't stand the show anymore. I'd tell them all about what I used to like and what I'd like to see in the future as an objective individual without fear of them smashing me from a superior situation (radio hosts vs caller) and in the end they would walk away understanding what a non brainwashed uberfan hears and how to change the show back to what we all love instead of crashing and burning as this new entity that doesn't entertain.

I want to help save the show so badly but I have no idea how to throw out my ideas and feelings to the show without being smashed. I know i'm just one guy, but I'm being selfish. I want the show I love back. I don't want to be dissapointed when ron and fez are over because now I HAVE to listen to OnA if I want to hear talk radio.

Here's a perfect example of the old show. Listen to it and tell me they are just as funny today if you can: http://afro202.com/archives/oa-bits/f-love.mp3

the jv and elvis feud got swept under the carpet the second the bosses told jv and elvis to knock that shit off and even though opie and anthony say they had nothing to do with it, having another show, that works for the same company silenced (while sitting in howard's old chair) made this one into an ugly and two faced situation.

It's like many of you have said. The commericial radio landscape is so different now. The censorship they are now subjected to is strangling them, and the breaks are killing the continuity of the show. It seems as if Opie is more preoccupied with hitting the breaks on time than he is with what's going on at the moment. It's gotten to the point where you'll actually hear him trying to go to a break right in the middle of a very funny bit or a great interview. Listen to the difference on the XM side with both O&A and R&F. if a bit is going strong they keep going until it's done. They're not pushed to cut it off just as it's getting good. The show is becoming too structured because of these stupid breaks. At this point they're basically commenting on the daily news stories and then near the end of the show they get in a guest that's just there to plug something and don't know O&A from Scott and Todd. It seems as if the guests they used to get on WNEW (and the one's that show up on the XM show) really wanted to be there, and knew who O & A were. I remember some hilarious radio with Brewer, Jay Mohr, Lewis Black etc... I think the morning vs. afternoon slot has something to do with it as well. In the morning they seem too tempted to just comment on the front page story as opposed to preparing something original. The old afternoon show seemed to have alot more original content. Even the few new bits they have come up with lately haven't had a great payoff (Fatty Pig Fatty anyone?). Having said that I still think its better than most of the other dreck on radio. Except for Imus I can't bear to listen to anything else in the morning. It would be interesting to see how Ron and Fez would sound back on commercial radio at this point. I think the restrictions have gotten even worse since they left DC. In my opinion, even though the audience is far smaller, shows like these are more at home in the uncensored environment of satellite.

He's too edgy for regular radio.

That would be kinda cool. Do a show that's JUST O and A on CBS? It would make for two distinct shows... cool I say
