View Full Version : Getting my kids into Star Wars, what order?

My kids are interested in the Star Wars movies now. How should I show it to them? 1-3 then 4-6 or 4-6 and then 1-3? It totally changes the way you appreciate the movies. Should Vader be the bad ass first od should he be the sympathized villain?

Show them 4-6, and never ever tell them there was a 1-3. After watching 6, you should probably take the dvd and burn it right in front of them.

The intricacies of carbon freezing and bounty hunting might be left to another day. Those ewoks are adorable, and leia in a bikini is also easy on young kid's eyes. Maybe then go to 1 and then 2 when they are bit older.

Excellent question! I know a lot of parents of young kids are having the same internal fights.

The better story is go 4-6, then 1-3. However, try and not be all old about the fact that soon they will mix them up and put them in the chronological order, and put as much weight to Jar Jar as they will Chewie. Kids who get into this series just know it as six parts and all inter-mingled - that, and they know the Legos video games. Don't feed them your hang ups until they are old enough to see that really only one of those movies was ever really good, and that two of them were all right, and the rest of the three was garbage.

If you do not show them 4-6 first then all of Empire Strikes Back is anti-climatic. You know who Yoda is right when you see him; You already know that Vader is Luke's father, and you don't get that suspense when he says "I am your father".

Although obi-wan was pretty good. Also, there is some sort of nostalgia about 4-6. Were you a kid when they came out?

Show them 4-6 now, then wait 20 years, get their hopes up that they will finally learn the backstory from one of the greatest tales of their childhood, then show them 1-3. Let them experience the ultimate letdown as you did. As we all did.

Or show them 4-6, then say, "Ok kids, after George Lucas made these films he made a movie called Howard the Duck. Show them that, then show them 1-3.

My earliest memories of Star Wars were watching all 3 in the mid-late 80's on WPIX in NY.

I think Episodes I and II were disappointing. Episode I was terrible and Episode II was average at best. I thought Episode III was fairly dark and flowed nicely. The quick cuts were good and obi-wan and the emperor were played perfectly. Hayden Christiansen was much better this go around. His transformation into Darth Vader was believable and well executed.

Show them the way you saw it. 4-6. Let them watch 4-6 a few times over before 1-3.

i was 7 when episode 4 hit the screens and i saw it 6 times in its first three weeks of release. I agree with majority here; show em in the order they were released. my kid is eight and he loved them last year when we watched them together (on a 100 in screen home theatre sitting in theatre recliners, which was a nice treat) we watched the clone war cartoon series in between 2 and 3 to fill in the gaps too. like i said he loved it. have fun budday.

edit--- where is sheepy on this... no battlestar galactica plug here?
