there has been some recent commercials for Lexus and this new feature. do you think it will last and do you think you could ever get comfortable taking your hands off the wheel?

i guess we got used to taking our feet off the gas pedal with cruise control but i just feel this is a bit more of a risk . what if there is a malfunction which causes an accident? who is at fault?

youtube demo

Thats kind of cool, but I still would do it manually. I wonder what would happen if either the front or rear car was pulling out at the same time? I also do not have a problem parallel parking, is it so difficult that this is needed?

The driver of the Lexus would still be at risk. Automatic features on cars malfunction all the time, but the driver is the one who pays the price. I personally don't like handing over control of the vehicle in such a tight situation. I like to be in control. I can see this causing some serious problems.

First thing I need to know is does it have motion sensors so when the idiot walks behind your car as your backing up (which happens to me all the time in Manhattan) it automatically stops?

If it doesn't I WANT IT MORE THAN EVER! I call kill the cocksucker and blame it on the car company.

I've never had any problem parallel parking, but since I don't live in a city I don't have to do it too often. The new Lexus feature is just another gadget for people to brag about.

I would think Gvac would be all over this.

Yes it has motion sensors, but the other key is you are still in control of the brake. so while its backing up and manuerveing in you still have to control the speed. so if someone walks behind you or a car pulls out you are still responsible to hit the brake, its not full automatic pp, but its pretty damn close.

its actually not bad, my friend just got one and it works pretty well.

I think this feature will be great once cars get rid of their tires, and start hovering like in the jetsons, blade runner, etc. That way, if you bump into the car behind you it just floats backwards a little.

Woah, I just got a picture in my mind of Judy Jetson taking the Voit-Kampf test.

If a company other than Toyota/Lexus was debuting this technology I'd be skeptical. Given their track record, however, I'm confident it will work seamlessly.

I'm excited to see it - not for me (of course I'm an excellent driver) but for the countless idiots I see every day who have no idea how to parallel park.

Now if they'd only come up with a way to let old ladies know that the Corolla they're driving isn't a Peterbilt and doesn't require them to swing into the left lane to make a right turn.

This is just another instance of the pussification of our society. Now you can't even park your own fucking car without help from a computer! If we rely on machines more and more and we'll find that it's a slippery slope until we all become food for the Morlocks.

What ever happened to that new technology where the car's wheels turn
totally sideways and you just pull into a parking spot with no backing up or
anything? Did anyone else read about this?

I drove one of these through work and the first thing i did was try this feature. It's pretty sick how it works and all, but it kinda pissed me off. Just another reason people don't need to learn how to drive, and most people can't drive already
If any type of sensor or automatic feature were to be installed on a vehicle to prevent stupid driving habits, I'd say lets get a governor that slows you down when you get too close to the car in front of you (Jersey people, you can feel me on the tailgating issue), or when you are drifting into a lane where cars are passing you 20 mph faster than your car is traveling, or prevent you from getting into the left lane unless you are doing at LEAST 10 miles faster than the posted speed limit on the road you are traveling.

And EVERYONE from Pennsylvania should be required to have these features on their vehicles before they venture into NJ.

It was for this person. HAHA! I kill me. The fact that my dream car is destroyed in this picture makes my heart hurt...... :(

it is going to be great when that feature malfunctions in mid-use and some lexus asshole starts smashing the cars in front of and behind them
I had a jaguar that had rear parking sensors then I sold it and my next car didnt have them. I didnt realize how much I started to rely on the sensors. I noticed that I no longer turned around when in reverse. I now just bought another jaguar and they have the sensors and I'm so happy. Backing up is so much nicer when you dont need to turn your head.
