Spending a year overseas made me really appreciate the sacrifices our troops stationed around the world have to endure -- and I wasn't even getting shot at.

Thanks to those who serve and to those who have served.

Veterans Day has been special to me for a while. My uncle, who served in the marines, was killed in November.

His job had him in Flordia, and he was drinking at a bar. When he left, he decided to leave his car and walk home not wanting to crash driving drunk. He had crashed years earlier on his motorcycle while drunk, and almost died from the injuries. In a twist of fate, since he was a drunk, he was a little soused he wandered off the curb and was struck and killed by an SUV. He was young, 34, this was '96

He was buried on Veterans day. Always being a bit of a show-off, we joked at his funeral that he must love knowing up above that every year on the anniversary of his burial he get a parade.

Happy Veterans Day Uncle Mike.

My Uncle Van will be 84 in January. He is my only blood relative that fought in WWII. Uncle Van never would talk to me about what he experienced. I love him.

An appropriate thread bump.

Thanks to all who have served and continue to serve, including my cousin who served in Iraq and made it home. We're proud of you all.

And as for past wars, here is just one of many untold stories.

World War II didn't just divide the world. It also divided four brothers. (http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/wayoflife/11/11/vets.brothers.japan/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)

Two Akune brothers fought for U.S., two for Japan in World War II

U.S. brothers had been in internment camp; served as interpreters

Japanese brothers drafted as teens; one was spotter for kamikaze pilots

Brothers reunited after end of war; all ended up living in U.S.
