few things to get done this offseason

we need a better second baseman, maybe lugo ?

delgado decided to not exercise his right to become a free agent again, he had the chance since he was traded in the first year of a new deal, it would have been a huge loss if he decided to leave, his bat easily made beltran and others better

will glavine stay or go back to atlanta ???

if he really wants to win or at least come close to winning another world series then he should stay with the mets ( but as yankee fans know, wives of left handed pitchers who played in ny who have a strong desire to go back home) could win out

definitely need some starting pitching as glavine may leave, as well as el duque, they're not re signing steve traschel, and pedro is out for at least until the all star break... maine and perez pitched admirably in the playoffs but in the long haul of a season im not sure they can keep it going

floyd is most likely gone, and i'm not sure if shawn green is the answer in right either

NEW YORK - Goodbye, Shea Stadium; hello, CitiField. The Mets and Citigroup Inc. have agreed on a 20-year sponsorship deal for the team's new ballpark that is worth more than an average of $20 million annually and includes stadium naming rights, a baseball official said Saturday. The source spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal will not be announced until Monday at the formal groundbreaking.

Did the Mets sell out..... Or Buy in?

I hope the Yanks do the same. I bet they get 25 mil. That could fetch them an new overrated thrid baseman.

From Baseball America

Mets fans, don't forget
about Matt Lindstrom. He came in for the seventh inning for the U.S.
and threw pure gas at the World hitters. He quickly sat down the final
three batters of the game to earn the save, touching 101 mph and
hitting triple-digits several times.

His most impressive at-bat
came against Braves prospect Yunel Escobar, who saw 101 and 100 mph
fastballs before striking out on a 78 mph changeup. He was a little bit
ahead of that pitch.

It's actually not that bad. I'm sure the choice of Citigroup was mostly financially based, but they also picked a name that works. Citifield. It looks corporate, but it sounds Metropolitan, and that's the major problem with the bulk of the other corporately sponsored stadiums in sports. Ameriquest Field? Comerica Park? And that $20 million/year is top free agent money.

and shea isnt like yankee stadium in terms of the name in history i couldnt care less what the fuck they call it

See there is history. It was named for William Shea, who brought National League baseball back to NY. There is always that argument from people that baseball would have of been brought back sooner. But that is not fully true. The lords of baseball needed to be threatend by the likes of Branch Rickey and men like William Shea and Mrs. Joan Payson to put pressure on the lords of baseball and their lofty exemption from the anti-trust clause. I guess I am nostalgic and remember the days when ballparks were named after people (Brendan Byrne arena is a great example), but understand the need for owners to get that corporate sponsorship.

How soon before the Shiti Field jokes start, if they haven't already? Ugh.

While I understand the economics of the decision, couldn't they have named it Citi Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium? While I dislike naming the field and stadium separately, it's a name that would have made everyone happy.

Looks like the Mets will have El Duque for two more years. I don't know about picking up Vicente Padilla. He can be good at times, though. Maybe two years in a pitchers park will do him good.

I saw a similar article in the Post but I just thought it would be nicer to name the entire stadium after him rather than having just a section of it dedicated to him.

I guess the trade off is that the Mets and Citigroup will be supporting the Jackie Robinson Foundation and funding scholarships, which, in the long run, will do more good than naming a stadium after him ever would.

It's nice to see that William Shea will also get some recognition in the new stadium as well.

I still don't get why the Mets are obligated to name anything after Jackie Robinson. (And I am in no way diminishing what he has meant to the sport) But he has no affiliation with the Mets, I hate when other teams attach themselves to othe teams pasts.

I was hoping to ass Mulder to the wish list along with Zito. They resigned Valentin, I doubt they target a second basemen.

Its funny, both the Jays and the Mets filled some holes last year but also created their own biggest holes. For the Jays it was middle infield defense with a lot of ground ball dependent pitchers, while the Mets traded a lot of pitching, mostly younger arms and set themselves up for injury concerns with one of the oldest rotations in the league. Let's hope they both learn that filling holes isn't the answer if it creates others.

I'd rather them find other ways such as overloading the hole position with possible players of a lesser level while keeping their strengths, as Hudson would have been a huge asset last year with the Jays as he won another gold glove. With our top two pitchers being ground ball pitchers, it is absolutely critical that the Jays get either Lugo or Gonzalez. And this without realizing the fact that they actually lost a bat in the move as well with nobody stepping up in either aspect. McDonald played decent D, but his bat was horrid.

If I had a choice it'd be tough as Lugo has a better bat, but Gonzo is a much better defensive SS. He did hit a bunch of hrs back a few years in Florida, but I have my questions on that. We'll see what both our teams do soon enough. The Mets will surely add a pitcher or two, I just don't know if the Jays have enough cash having already signed Thomas for DH (pending physical) and the need to keep Wells, sign a catcher, and finally add some middle rotation pitching.

I'd be super happy to come back here in March and be able to talk about the Jays having Gonzo at SS, Eaton and Meche as #4 and #5, Zaun as the everyday backstop and of course Thomas and Wells all locked in for a few years. Only two for Thomas would be smart too. Man is he fucking slow and big guys get old overnight.

Maybe I'm biased a little but why the hell didn't the Mets go after a much better fielding and a clutch on-base/avg hitting Frank Cat from the Jays. The guy is from the NY area and would probably taken even less to play so close to home and is one hell of a locker room guy. He bounced all around the Jay's lineup over the years and positions all the time maintaining a .300 average along with getting some huge hits, always very timely. The guy has a good arm and throws a lot more runners out than you would think, especially since he doesn't always play the field. With Reed Johnson, younger and an excellent (gg quality) fielder now taking the LF spot and Thomas as DH, Cat was definitely gone and sure enough he left. I really think the Mets would have been better off here in terms of saving some money and getting the type player they needed more, rather than what Alou brings. It isn't a bad move, but Cat would have been better and last years. The power numbers differ greatly sure, but you paid for it and didn't need that aspect in the light of what happened in the playoffs. And Alou is 8 years older.

Player Comparison

Outfielder Hitting Stats, 2006

Next Stats>>

Select
up to 5
players

Picks left

Player

<td align="center" bgcolor="#cc

I think they were looking for a guy to replace the power they thought they were going to get from Floyd last year. LoDuca, Valentine and Green can be used to move guys along. It wouldn't have been terrible but I think they were just looking for more power. Plus, I don't think the Mets would have given him three years.

Perhaps they think Miledge and Chavez will be making more starts in right this year as well and didn't want to have 2-3 light to medium power hitting outfielders. Yet after last year's playoff, I think the Mets inability to move runners was exposed and when the power isn't there, they just don't score. Sure Reyes can cause havoc on the bases, but he has to get on first and not hit pop and fly outs. And Green, Loduca, and Valentine simply didn't move shit all season.

Hard to move people over when they are hardly on base.

i would've loved catalonatto. he is just a really solid hitter but he isn't the best fielder in the world. he might've thrown out alot of people, but so did soriano. that being said alou is a righty and the mets have had some trouble handling lefties most of the season.

Cat is a guy who gets on base and moves them over. Great situational hitter including getting on and getting something started. As far a fielding goes I watched him all year, almost every fucking game for the whole time he was in Toronto and he's easily above average. He gets to almost anything and made great throws to get people out who should be running, not like with Soriano throwing out people bc they know they can run and he makes a surprise good throw or gets lucky. If Wells is a 10 fielding on the Jays, Reed Johnson is a 9.5 and Cat was a 7.5. I'd put Hunter as a 10, Floydd as a 6 (arm is a cannon) and Alou as a 6.5 bc he'll get to more balls than Floydd but not as strong an arm.

Anyone know how true this is. I heard they signed 85 year old Ruben Sierra to a minor league deal. To what, not DH. If I remember, he wasn't great in the field. Oh and he is older than Alou
