This goes back a while, but every weeknight, Cosell did a commentary on
the ABC Radio Network called "Speaking Of Sports". Whether you loved
him or hated him, it was great radio, and I'm afraid that we will never
have that honesty and candor on the air again. Cosell was brilliant.

He also had another radio spot called "Speaking of Everything" which was about things other than sports.

I miss that old loud-mouth too. As annoying as he was, he was intelligent and a larger-than-life personality. I liked when he hosted "Battle of the Network Stars", doing a play-by-play of a relay race with Gabe Kaplan as seriously as an Olympic event...

Thanks JW, the 70's had some crazy shit going
on, from Evel Knevel to Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs. As for
Cosell, he once hosted a failed live Saturday night variety show, and
the so-called "new Beatles", the Bay City Rollers, made their American
debut. They sucked.
This is somewhat of a detour but there was a guy, Don Vogel, who used to call in to WFAN's morning show back before Imus was the host. Greg Gumble did the show when they were on 1050 AM and Vogel (who was a broadcaster out of Chicago) would call and do these hilarious impressions. He would call as Cosell, Bobby Knight, Pete Franklin (a bitter and insane WFAN afternoon host at the time), Harry Caray and a few others. He was Amazing. His Cosell was one of the funniest bits ever. Does anyone from the NY or Chicago area remember this guy? I used to have a tape of several of his bits, but it has since dissapeared. it had to be in '87 or early '88 when he called WFAN, as it was before the move to 660 AM when Imus took over the morning show.
WFAN fan since day one on 1050. I was a fan of Jim Lampley's show, and talked regularly about college football.

I remember the most about Howard Cosell opening up the Monday Night Football broadcast. He really got me cranked up for the game! He was also awesome doing the halftime highlights which was before cable etc. so you really enjoyed it and did not see most of the footage beforehand.

It would be cool to bring some of Cosell's old radio shows to XM. After all, we do have WOLFMAN JACK!!
