System Shock 2 was released in 1998 and I played it for the first time a year ago and I have to say I was amazed how time has not degraded this title. It's a fantastic game. It was one of the most immersive, scary games I've ever played. The story is impressive, and I'm often critical of stories in games as a whole. It was a successful blend of many genres- sci-fi setting with survival horror mixed with FPS mixed with RPG a la Deus Ex elements. You hack computers, you upgrade your abilities as the game progresses including your proficiency with weapons and other technical skills.

The game uses the same engine that powered Thief II so the graphics are naturally dated, but the sound quality of the game is phenomenal (and there is a graphics enhancement pack floating around there). The enemies are some of the creepiest imagined in all of gaming. The mutants apologize while they're trying to bludgeon you with pipes, and beg you to run away. You can check up on it at wikipedia, there are several articles devoted to the game. I give the game my fullest endorsement- the game was 7 years old when I played it, and I loved every minute of it. That's rare for me, and I play most games. This was something truly unique, original, and just damn fun. For the sake of reference to more modern games, the upcoming Bioshock which has been on the cover of numerous gaming magazines is considered the 'spiritual successor' to System Shock.
</sup>

Has anyone else on this board played this game? I'm curious to know if there is anyone out there who has, and if so, what their impressions of the game are. I know I'm reaching back far for this one, but I'm sure there's people who remember it.

OK, maybe nobody knows about it/cares. This thread gets a big fat F.

I played this game and its undoubtedly one of the best of all time but its an eight year old game and this isn't a huge gaming board so you aren't going to get much action.
I played it too. But the first Half Life is the big best old timer for me.
Does this game run in XP? I started playing it a few years ago but stopped.

Yeah the title can run in XP. It might depend on the version. There's online forums dedicated to the game still, and they have ways of getting the game to run in XP if you are having trouble. There might even be a free modified XP-version of the game floating around somewhere, though you'd have to do some digging.

System shock 2 is the closest game to Deus Ex in my opinion. I was in retro-mode and played all the great computer games I hadn't gotten around to playing while I was in college; Deus Ex was my project in Januaray/February- loved it.

Sorry for the newbie expectations- I just researched the FFXII thread and realized that it's over a year old and have barely a thousand views and that's one of the hotter games in recent years. Glad to hear I'm no the only one though who played this game, so I'm happy. In closing, this thread gets a C- and I'm looking forward to Bioshock. Looking great so far.

Ugh, sheeplover reminded me of an awful game I had played on Sega CD called Sewer Shark. That game stunk.

Yeah, I'm stuck right now in that limbo between school and fulltime jobs, so I have more time than I used to have for playing games so gaming is now something of a fanboy obsession for me. Earthworm Jim was a great game. Though I make it a rule not to play videogames I played pre-highschool unless it's with friends, because the inevitable wave of nostalgia that comes with playing way old school hits me a wee bit too hard for my liking.
