Depends on how much storage you want, and if you want a flash drive or hard drive.

The Creative Zen and Sandisk Sansa are two good ones for flash memory but max at 8 gigs. For a larger collection, you might look at a Toshiba Gigabeat or Creative Zen Vision which are hard drives and have 30 gig or 60 gig memory.

The Creative Zen will give you the most bang for your buck, and has a lot of features that the iPod doesn't, like voice recording, FM radio, and a replaceable battery... All that extra shit and still for LESS $ than the iPod. I'm happy with mine.

Hey I have the IRiver H320..it not bad. I a little hard with going
from one band to another....the ipod click wheel is easier but I like
it. You don't have to use the software to use it...but if you
do..you can sort by artist, album name and type of music. Also you can
use it as a portable hard drive..just connect with USB and you can put
anything on it.

Might find it cheap on EBAY or direct from the company. www.iriveramerica.com

Also try Buy.com and the other usual sites.

Hope this helped ya.

5073..punching out...SEE YA!!!

Oh yea forgot..the H320 also has voice recording and fm radio...can also look at pictures but they have to be a certain size.

After my Rio Karma i got an iRiver and it sucked TOTAL BALLS.

You get more features-that you probably won't even use. Yeah i thought the voice recording thing would be nifty for class lectures, nope. I never even used the fucking thing because the strip was so hard to navigate through i would not even want to bother.

I was SO upset/pissed when i swung the Karma off my desk but half a month after getting my iPod i adjusted nicely.

If you had to go between the Zen and the iRiver i'd take the Zen, if you cuold get your hands on a Rio Karma you might be even more lucky, i think they might have discontinued them though.

i have one of these, and it is miraculous.

it is beyond easy, super cool, and about the size of a sugar cube. weighs nothing.

wonderful.

(oh, it also has an fm radio in it)

http://www.mobibluamerica.com/dah1500.html
